Soule photographs of American Indians and camps Administrative Information Provenance Album of silver gelatin prints, originally MS 3912-A, was obtained in February 1937 from Henry G. Peabody, a Pasadena, CA, publisher of educational slides and films. In a letter dated March of that year, Peabody states that he was became acquainted with W. S. Soule in 1886, when Soule was senior partner in the Soule Photographic Co. in Boston. Provenance Album of albumen prints as well as some of the unmounted prints and cabinet cards, originally MS 3912-b, was donated by Lucia A. Soule, William S. Soule's daughter, in May Provenance Eighteen cabinet cards, originally MS 3912-c, may have been collected in the Bureau of American Ethnology over many years and from various sources. One copy of the portrait of Big Bow is marked for the printer in James Mooney's handwriting, and was used in the BAE's 17th Annual Report. Biographical Note William Stinson Soule ( ) was the photographer at Fort Sill (now in Oklahoma) from its founding in 1869 to the end of the Indian campaigns in Soule moved from New England circa 1868, first working as a photographer at Fort Dodge, Kansas, then at Camp Supply with General Philip Sheridan's campaigning troops. As the photographer for the United States Army at Fort Sill, he photographed the construction of the fort as well as many of the people and events associated with the Indian Wars. Soule left Fort Sill in 1875 to return to Boston where he joined his brother's Soule Photograph Co. and then operated the Soule Art Company until his death. Scope and Contents Photographs by William S. Soule depicting American Indians and camps in the vicinity of Fort Dodge, Kansas and Camp Supply and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Documented tribes include Arapaho, Caddo, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, Kiowa-Apache, and Wichita Indians. One albumen print mounted on a card with C. W. Carter's photographer imprint, though the photograph was made by Soule. One album includes silver gelatin prints made from original Soule negatives by Henry G. Peabody.
