Presenter: Carol Hansen Devine, M.A. Ed. Family History Consultant Desert Hills Ward, West Richland, WA Taming the FamilySearch Goliath Class 4: Add Photo or Story Recorded 1 Dec 2016

Class 3 covered Family Tree data entry standards for entering a name, date and location. These standards help us avoid and locate possibly duplicate people. We added a spouse, marriage, and child to an existing person. In Class 4 (this class), we learn to add a: 1. Cameo portrait to a person page 2. Group portrait and link it to multiple person pages 3. Story or life sketch to a person page

Process to add a digital photo to Person Page(s) Preparation: Create a digital photo from your printed photo (see next slide). Save the digital photo to your computer or portable storage device. Know how to find it again. Step 1: Add a digital photo to Family Tree from a Person Page. Step 2: Add a title and description to the photo. Step 3: Frame one person s face and name the person. Step 4: For each additional person in the photo, repeat Step 3 and tag (link) the photo to that person s page in Family Tree. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Group? Step 4

How we digitize an historic photo We create a digital (electronic) copy of a printed photograph on a machine that looks like a printer or small photocopier. If you have a multi-function printer at home, it probably can print, copy, fax and scan. The scanning function permits you to save a digital copy of any photograph that will fit on the scanning glass. With a scanner: 1. The copy you get is electronic, as if you took it on a cell phone or with a digital camera. You tell the scanner where to store it on your computer or storage device. 2. You have the ability to crop the electronic photo, thus enlarging and improving it without harming the original picture. You can probably scan your photos at your local LDS family history center, Walmart, Rite Aid, community library, office supply store or copy center.

Save a photo obtained online to your computer or flash drive 1. Find the photo online. In this example, I found it in Ancestry.com. 2. In the photo, using your right mouse button, click somewhere in the photo one time. 3. From the displayed dropdown menu, using your left mouse button, click Save image as. 4. Tell your computer where to store the image: Choose the location, perhaps a folder in your Pictures file, or a flash drive. In the cell File name, add a brief title for the photo. Click the SAVE button. 5. Credit your source, probably in the Description Cell. In this example, I would type Photo shared and identified by [username] on [date] in the [name] Family Tree on Ancestry.com. Thank you! 6. In Family Tree, find & record the name & ID # of each person in the photo. Let s try it!

Even a poor photo can help someone else identify their photos Step 1: Add a digital photo from the Person Page a. Have the scanned photo on your computer, or a flash drive or CD inserted in the computer. b. Go to the Person Page. Write down the Person s ID Number. c. Near the top of the Person Page, click the Memories tab under the person s name. d. Click the Upload Photo button, or Select from Gallery. e. Disregard the screening message. Right click the photo once. [If selecting from gallery] click the photo, then the blue Attach Photos button. Go to Step 2: Add a title and description to the photo.

Step 2: Add a title and description to the photo You are now in the photo identification screen. a. Above the photo, see words to the effect Add a Title. Add a brief title. Examples: Augustus G & Margarite E (Johnson) Otto Charlotte E (Spencer) Otto Family of Octavius Laing Hicks Gravestone: Hannah Tavener Click SAVE. b. To the right of the photo, see the Add a description cell. This can be as detailed as you wish. If possible, include the date, location and source of the photo. Click ADD DESCRIPTION. Go to Step 3: Frame a face and identify the person in the photo

Step 3: Frame a face and identify the person in the photo a. Frame the face of one person: Right click once within the photo. Resize the white circle to frame the face by clicking and holding a white square outside the borders of the white circle. b. Identify the person: Find and click in the white Who is this? rectangle. Type the person s name exactly as it is listed in Family Tree. First photo for person: Click the black bold words Add New (add a first photo). Another photo for person: Family Tree displays the person s name and ID number. Click it. Group photo? Go to Step 4: Tag another person in the photo to their Person Page

Step 4: Tag another people in the photo to their Person Page a. Know the name as entered in Family Tree, and Person I.D. Number for each person in the photo. b. Frame the face of the next person in the photo, just as you did in Step 2. c. Identify the person: Find and click in the white Who is this? rectangle. Type the person s name exactly as it is listed in Family Tree. Follow steps for first photo of person, or another photo for person described in Step 3. a. Tag the person in the photo to their own Person Page: Below the description box, in the People in This Photo section, see a red exclamation mark. Click the words Not Attached to the Tree. Click Attach to Family Tree. In the displayed white rectangle, type the Person s ID Number. Click the Select button. Confirm it s the right person. Click the blue attach button.

So what can go wrong? To adjust the white frame, under the Memories tab on the Person Page, click the photo. In the photo identification screen, in the People in this Photo section, click the name of the person. Click EDIT TAG. Reposition the white portrait frame. Click the blue SAVE button. To change the cameo portrait, under the Memories tab on the Person Page, click the existing cameo portrait at the top of the page. From the offered choices, click the cameo portrait you prefer to use. If not displayed in a few seconds, refresh the screen (right click a blank spot on the screen, and click the refresh icon, which may look like a small circular arrow). To remove a duplicate link to a Person Page from the photo, under the Memories tab on the Person Page, click the photo. In the photo identification screen, click each duplicate blue name til you find the one you want gone. Click REMOVE TAG below that name.

When adding a photo through a Person Page isn t working a. Have the scanned photo on your computer, a flash drive or CD inserted in the computer. b. Know the Person s ID Number. c. Write the ID Number down legibly. d. Find the FamilySearch icon in the upper left corner of the screen. e. Click the black word Memories to the right of the icon. f. Click this icon and then g. Locate the photo on your computer, flash drive or CD. Click it. h. Click to add it to your photo album in Family Tree. i. Begin to identify the photo by clicking somewhere within in once. Continue to Step 2: Add a title and description to the photo.

Add a story to a Person Page Pearle Hansen s New Furniture My grandfather, Harry Emanuel Hansen, married Pearle Pauline when Dad was 13. She was a feisty little German lady who had an 8 year old son, Timm, by a previous marriage. Shortly after their wedding, Pearle came home to find all new oak furniture throughout the house. When she learned grandpa had borrowed the money to buy it, she insisted he take it all back and Pearle made this demand while threatening him with a butcher knife! Click the Memories tab on the Person Page. Find the STORIES section. Click Create Story. Add a title. Type or paste in your story. If desired, attach a photo you have already added to FamilyTree. Click the little circle by the photo you want to attach.

Add a Life Sketch to a Person Page Note: Family Tree doesn t consider typing and editing a life sketch to be activity and will time you out of your password after about 15 minutes, causing you to lose an unsaved life sketch. We suggest you either: A. Save the draft life sketch within 10 minutes of beginning it, and resume work in editing mode. OR B. Follow steps on this slide. 1. Write the life sketch in word processing software outside of FamilyTree. 2. Copy and paste it into the Life Sketch section near the top of a person page. 4. Edit and embellish the Life Sketch as desired.

Covered in Class 4 1. Family Tree helps us preserve precious family photos and stories for our deceased relatives. 2. From the Person Page, we can: Add or change a cameo portrait Add a group photo and link it to several Person Pages Add a story (with or without photo) 3. Write a life sketch in word processing software and copy and paste it into a Person Page for editing. Homework Assignment Before beginning Class 5, practice adding or changing a cameo portrait on at least 2 person pages in Family Tree. Add at least 3 group photos and link them to the Person Pages of the people they include.

Coming in Class 5 Fear-Free Merging of Duplicate People Families Discover possibly duplicate people How the merge screen works Options to merging Merge and unmerge: step by step Please join us!
