The noise added to the original image by changes the intensity of some pixels while other remains unchanged. In this paper, an Image Restoration approach has been adopted in order to of obtaining the original image from the degraded image with noise. The linear filtering and non-linear filter such as Averaging filter, Median filter and Wiener filter with different windows size is used on images of different noises like impulsive noise, salt and pepper noise, speckle noise and Poisson noise with varying noise ratio. The performance of the proposed idea has been evaluated in MATLAB simulations on gray level images. The experiment study is conducted with the help of Mean Square Errors (MSE) and Peak-Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR). Keywords Image Processing, Image denoising, Filters, Mean Square Errors (MSE), Peak-Signal to Noise Ratio(PSNR). I. INTRODUCTION Digital image processing is the most important technique used in processing of image data. Images and image sequences are frequently corrupted by noise in the acquisition, transmission, reception, storage & retrieval processes. The goal of de-noising is to remove the noise. Denoising of image is an essential part of image reconstruction process. Noise may be classified as substitutive noise i.e. impulsive noise like salt and pepper noise, additive noise like Gaussian noise, multiplicative noise like speckle noise and Poisson noise. The important property of image denoising model is that it should completely remove noise with preserving edges [1]. Image de-noising is a vital task in image processing. There are many ways to de-noise an image or a set of data and methods exists. The important property of a good image de-noising model is that it should completely remove noise as far as possible and should preserve the edges. It becomes very important to de-noise the image before applying to different application [2]. Image Restoration is the process of obtaining the original image from the degraded image given the knowledge of the degrading factors. Digital image restoration is a field of engineering that studies methods used to recover original scene from the degraded images. Techniques used for image restoration are oriented towards modeling the degradations, usually blur and noise and applying various filters to obtain an approximation of the original scene [3]. Traditionally, there are two types of models i.e. linear model and non-liner model. The linear filtering technique applies the algorithm linearly to all the pixels in the image without defining the image as corrupted or uncorrupted pixel. Where as non-linear filter such as Median filter is most used filter to remove the salt and pepper noise it uses a technique of windowing pixels of noisy image. And the Wiener filter is to filter out noise that has corrupted a signal. It is based on a statistical approach. An Experiment study is made on various filtering algorithms to remove noise from different noisy images and to preserve the quality of them. However, in this paper first image is taken and different type of noise is added to image to make it as noisy images and then noisy images is decomposed by filters. Here we are going to use three different types of filters i.e. Mean Filter (or) Averaging Filter, Median Filter and All rights Reserved 48
2 Filter. To analysis performances evaluation we used a matrix window of varying in size of matrix. For this purpose the standard performances parameters like peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and mean square error (MSE) are used to measure the image quality [2]. The rest of the paper has been divided into the following sections. Section 2 describes the different type of noise. Section 3 describes the techniques that are compared in this paper for mixed noise removal. Section 4 explains the simulation results for comparison of the above mentioned techniques followed by conclusion and references. II. IMAGE NOISE Noise to be any degradation in the image caused by external disturbance. Noise gets introduced during acquisition, transmission, reception, storage & retrieval processes. If an image is being sent electronically from one place to another via satellite or wireless transmission or through networked cables, we may expect errors to occur in the image signal. These errors will appear on the image output in different ways depending on the type of disturbance in the signal. Usually we know what type of errors to expect and the type of noise on the image, hence we investigate some of the standard noise for eliminating or reducing noise in image [4]. A. Gaussian Noise Gaussian noise is a statistical noise. It is evenly distributed over the whole image. While other distributions are possible, the Gaussian (normal) distribution is usually a good model, due to the central limit theorem that says that the sum of different noises tends to approach a Gaussian distribution.the probability density function (PDF) Of Gaussian noise is equal to that of the normal distribution, also known as Gaussian distribution.amplifier noise is a major part of the "read noise" of an image sensor, that is, of the constant noise level in dark areas of the image [5]. B. Salt-and- B. Pepper Noise An image containing salt-and-pepper noise will have dark pixels in bright regions and bright pixels in dark regions [5]. This type of noise can be caused by dead pixels, analog to digital converter errors, bit errors in transmission, etc. This can be eliminated in large part by using dark frame subtraction and by interpolating around dark/bright pixels. C. Poisson Noise Poisson noise or Shot noise is a type of electronic noise which can be modeled by a Poisson process. Shot noise results from discrete nature of electric charge. Shot noise may be dominant when the finite number of particles that carry energy is sufficiently small so that uncertainties due to the Poisson distribution, which describes the occurrence of independent random events. The magnitude of shot noise increases according to the square root of the expected number of events, such as the electric current or intensity of light. But since the strength of the signal itself increases more rapidly, the relative proportion of shot noise decreases and the signal to noise ratio (considering only shot noise) increases anyway. D. Speckle Noise Speckle noise is a granular noise that inherently exists in and degrades the quality of the active radar and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Speckle noise in conventional radar results from random fluctuations in the return signal from an object that is no bigger than a single image-processing element. It increases the mean grey level of a local area. Speckle noise in SAR is generally more serious, causing difficulties for image interpretation. It is caused by coherent processing of backscattered signals from multiple distributed targets. Speckle noise is caused by signals from elementary scatters, the gravity-capillary ripples, and manifests as a pedestal image, beneath the image of the sea All rights Reserved 49
3 III. TECHNIQUES COMPARED To have better understanding for users we would like to explain the techniques used in this paper for comparison purpose in detail. The techniques that were implemented in MATLAB. A. Mean Filter This is the simplest type of filter to remove noise from image. In this technique, each pixel is replaced by arithmetic mean of neighboring pixels. The explanation of averaging theory is that images typically vary slowly over space, so neighboring pixels are likely to have similar values, and it is therefore appropriate to average them together. But this assumption of slow variation in pixels fails at edges and does not preserve them. This can remove light noise but introduces blurriness in image. Mean Filter is poor in edge preserving. B. Median Filter The median filter is non-linear filter. It removes noise effectively as well as preserving sharp edges. A median filter is more effective than convolution when the goal is to simultaneously reduce noise and preserving edges of image. It simply replaces each pixel value by the median of the intensity level in the neighborhood of the pixel [6]. C. Weiner filter Wiener filter is to reduce the amount of noise present in a signal by comparison with an estimation of the desired noiseless signal. The goal of the Wiener filter is to filter out noise that has corrupted a signal. It is based on a statistical approach. Typical filters are designed for a desired frequency response. However, the design of the Wiener filter takes a different approach. The Wiener filter approaches filtering from a different angle [7]. IV. SIMULATION RESULTS Color image is taken and convert into gray scale image as reference image. Four types of noise i.e. Gaussian noise, salt and pepper noise, Poisson noise and speckle noise are added to the image. Denoising is performed using three filters i.e. Average filter, Median filter and Wiener filter with Wavelet Transform. Comparison is being made on the basis of some evaluated parameters. The performance evaluation of the filtering operation is quantified by the PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) and MSE (Mean Square Error) calculated using formula: Figure 1. Color and grey level images taken as an input image. Where, f[i,j] is original image and f I [i,j] is de-noised All rights Reserved 50

CONCLUSION In this paper an experiment study is done on noisy image with basic filters with varying the size of matrix window. The study specifies that noises like salt and pepper, Gaussian, speckle and Poisson are reduced less contain when applying 3x3 matrix window size. But when the size of window is increase it show that image is been blurred. The performance of the Wiener Filter after de-noising for all Speckle, Poisson and Gaussian noise is better than Mean filter and Median filter. The performance of the Median filter after de-noising for all Salt & Pepper noise is better than Mean filter and Wiener filter. The study is conducted with the help of Mean Square Errors (MSE) and Peak-Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR).
