Resizing Images for PDI Competitions Introduction Entries for projected digital image (PDI) competitions are loaded into a program that facilitates the presentation and scoring of entries (DiCentra). This takes a little time and consequently it is necessary for all digital entries to be correctly prepared and submitted in advance of the competition. Entries may be submitted as attachments to the projectionist at least three days before the competition to allow time for loading into DiCentra. If you are unable to do this, images may be submitted the week before the competition on a memory card, memory stick, CD or DVD. It should hold only the image files being submitted. The storage media should be clearly labeled with the author s name and will be returned to the member on the competition evening. Our projector has a resolution of 1440 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high, so images should be resized to fit within these dimensions. An image of these dimensions will fill the screen. If the image does not fit this format, it should be resized to make best use of the screen i.e. either the width should be 1440 pixels and the height less than 1080 pixels (landscape or letterbox format), or the height should be 1080 pixels and width less than 1440 pixels (portrait format). If you do not resize your images, they may suffer artefacts such as softening and jagged edges, and may even be cropped by the software. No responsibility can be accepted by the club if this occurs as a result of faulty preparation of the image file. Once you have resized your image, inspect it closely at 100% (Actual Pixels) on your screen as it may require a little extra sharpening. Members can enter up to three images per competition, with the top two scores being recorded on the leaderboard. Checklist for Submitting Your Images Images should be re-sized to a maximum 1440 pixels wide and 1080 pixels high Images should be in JPEG format and srgb colour space. Images should be renamed using the following format: Image number (01 to 03), space, then the image title exactly as you want it to appear. e.g. 01 Sugar and Spice.jpg 02 Fish and Chips.jpg 03 Bread and Butter.jpg Let the projectionist know which level you wish to enter your images (Level 1 for beginner/intermediate, and Level 2 for more advanced)
How to Resize Your Images There are many ways of resizing images, with most image editing applications including this functionality. If you do not have a suitable application to do this, there are a whole host of free services available online. Below are instructions for two of the more common image editing applications (Photoshop 6 or later, and Photoshop Element), and a step-by-step guide to using an example free online service. Until you are comfortable with the process, it is strongly recommended that you take a copy of your original file before attempting to re-size it!!! Resize Your Images Using Photoshop 6 or Later Open the image in Photoshop and flatten any layers. Use File > Automate > Fit Image and type in the required maximum size of the image (Width 1440 Height 1080). Click OK. Enlarge onscreen to 100% (Actual Pixels) and apply a suitable level of sharpening using Unsharp Mask. Use Image > Mode > Convert to Profile and convert the image to srgb working space (Edit > Convert to Profile in Photoshop CS2 or later). Use File > Save As to save the image to a different file name or folder in JPEG format with high quality (10 or greater). Ensure that the check box next to "ICC Profile" is ticked - it should be showing srgb. Resize Your Images Using Photoshop Elements Open the image in Photoshop Elements and flatten any layers. Use Image > Resize > Image Size and ensure that the "Resample Image: (Bicubic)" and "Constrain Proportions boxes are ticked. Under "Pixel Dimensions" type 1440 in the Width: box. The other number will adjust accordingly, but must not exceed If it does, adjust the Height: value. The final image must not exceed 1440w x 1080h pixels. Click OK. View the image at 100% (actual pixels) and apply a suitable level of sharpening using Enhance >Unsharp Mask. Use Image > Convert Color Profile and Apply srgb Profile. If your image already has this profile it will be greyed out. Use File > Save As to save the image to a different file name or folder in JPEG format with high quality (10 or greater). Ensure that the check box next to "ICC Profile" is ticked. Name the file using the format described in the previous section. Resize Your Images Using an Example Online Service 1. Open your internet browser and navigate to Click on the Browse button (circled in red in the image below) to select the picture on your PC that you want to resize.
2. When the file manager window opens, locate the picture that you want to resize and double click it. This should take you back to the screen above, however your filename should now appear (example circled in green in the below image). 3. Click Continue (circled in red in the image above) after which you will see a screen similar to that shown in the image below. The image that you selected for resizing on your PC should appear in the box highlighted in yellow.
4. Click on the drop down menu (circled in red in the image above). 5. Select Custom Size from the drop down menu (circled in red in the image above). 6. Enter the dimensions that you would like to resize your picture to (the dimensions for Photocraft PDI competition entries are circled in red in the image below).
7. Click I m Done to resize your image (circled in red in the image below). 8. You then have 20 minutes to decide what to do with your image before it is deleted from the website. Typically you will want to click on Save to Disk (circled in red in the image below) to save the resized image to your PC.
9. Find your resized image on your PC, open it and check that it still looks OK. Good luck!
