1 3D Scanning Guide UTSOA has a Konica Minolta Vivid 910 3D non-contact digitizing system. This scanner is located in the digital fabrication section of the technology lab in Sutton Hall It is free for use by all student in the school of architecture. The Vivid 910 system is capable of scanning over 300,000 data points with very high accuracy in under one minute. The unit is also equipped with an automated rotary stage for 360 degree captures and will overlay captured geometry with textures captured from the camera lens of the unit. - See more at: 0. Login Ask a TA at the SOA-Technology Desk to log into the computer with the Admin account. I. Startup 1. Make sure that the scanner is turned on before the computer. If the scanner is turned off (or not recognized), reboot the computer with the scanner on. 2. Launch Geomagic Studio 2012 from the desktop. 3. When the welcome screen comes up, select Scan. 4. When the Minolta Vivid Plugin Tray comes up on the left, click the camera button.

2 Note: If you lose the Minolta tray at any point, select the Hardware tab at the top of the window and click the Minolta Vivid button. II. Place Object for Scanning: 1. Select 'Show/Hide Live Image Window", then click the 'stream' check box. You can now see what the scanner sees in the window. 2. Place object in optimal position with appropriate lens (see object and placement guidelines below). 3. Uncheck the "Stream" box. If it is on during calibration, the software will crash. III. Calibrate Rotational Axis: 1. Place the calibration chart on the turntable. Make sure that the black stripe is at the center of rotation and that the wooden top is relatively centered on the turntable base. (You will need to reach under the wooden top to check if it s centered on the turntable.)

3 2. Expand the Turntable Control Dialogue in the Minolta Tray and select 'Calibrate'. 3. If calibration is successful, you should see an image like the one below in the Live Window.

4 4. Place the object back on the turntable and recheck Stream. As you place the object, do not move the tripod, table or turntable as this would invalidate the calibration. IV. Check Settings Your settings should be similar to the image below. Camera Control: Auto Focus, Auto Intensity and Auto Brightness should all be checked Advanced Camera Control: Do not change these settings. Scanning Options: Name You can name your scan here. Scan Angle Filter Default of 75 is fine for most cases. This is a decimal field (0 to 90 degrees) that specifies the maximum divergence from perpendicular of surfaces whose points are to be captured. Turntable Control: Turntable and Com Port - Use settings shown at left. Scan mode: Single - Takes a single scan from one angle. Continuous (recommended setting) After the first scan, which will require confirmation, the scanner will automatically continue scanning, rotating the object by the number of degrees specified in the Step box between each scan. Multishot Like Continuous mode, but requires you to click Scan after each step. Step: Specifies the number of degrees the object will be rotated between scans. V. Scan Object (using Continuous mode) 1. Under Scanning, click Scan. This will scan the object and place the first scan in the Live Window.

5 2. After the first scan is verified (meaning you have checked that good data was collected), click the Store button. The scanner will continue through the rest of the scans automatically. NOTE: If your scan looks like a radial array of object segments as in the image below, go back to the turntable calibration step.

6 3. Click 'OK' on the Minolta Vivid Dialogue. This will close the plug-in and return you to the application with your scanned data. VI. Merge and Save The Geomagic software has a number of options for editing your model that are not covered in this guide. However-- **If you want to make any changes or adjustments to your scan, do so before moving on to the next step ** 1. Select all of your scans under the model manager, and click "Merge" under the Points tab.

7 2. Click "OK" under Merge Scans. 3. Select your merged scan under the model manager, and click the Save button. You can save your model as an.stl file (recommended) or another file format, depending on which program you will use to continue working on your model. NOTE: AutoCAD, 3DS Max, Rhino & other common modeling software cannot handle six-figure meshes - if you are bringing a single scan into a model - we usually recommend ~25k polygons (see Max Triangles in the dialogue box above) - if you need greater detail you can go up to perhaps 75k, if you want smaller files, you can reduce the number significantly. 8 The scanner works best with matte-white objects. Black, glossy, or transparent objects will have problems scanning or may not scan at all. Using corn starch, white spray paint, epsom salt spray (from the 3d print process), or 'spray developer' are ways that object can be treated to provide quality scanning. In order for a surface to be scanned it must be visible simultaneously to the optical lens (upper aperture) and the laser lens (lower aperture) on the 3D scanner. With the 'medium' lens the scanner and current setup the scanner is ready to scan objects ranging from about 3"-cubed to about 12"-cubed. (Using alternate lenses, this range can be extended down to 0.5"-cubed or up to 36"-cubed object volumes. For alternate lens installation see the computer lab service desk.)
