> objective(s): Students will seamlessly morph two photo sources into one image with all changes and integrations undetectable even when zoomed in > curricular focus: This lesson emphasizes the effective blending of multiple images resources using the Clone tool and Healing Brush > specifications: save as: Photo Morph_Lastname.psd dimensions: each tile is 550px by 700px at 150 dpi; final artwork doc is1650 px by 700 px resolution: minimum150 dpi (note: resolution can be higher if larger, higher-res images can be found) mode: RGB contents: Transparent > instruction: discuss successful photo selection sources have distinctly different facial features find people with very different eyes, nose and mouth shape plus different cheek bones and jaw lines the more different their features, the easier it will be to find the "average" between them but make sure mouths are either both not smiling or both smiling- do not mix! sources have identical head angles (this is extremely important) you will not be able to effectively blend feautres that are not on the same angle sources have very similar skin tones having to average skin tones is very time consuming so choose people with similar skin coloring sources have same light source direction you need highlights and shadows to be in the same locations on the face crop heads so they are the same size within the frame eyes, nose and mouth should line up heads should be relatively the same size crop should include neck and a little bit of shoulder, much like a school portrait (see example below) review Clone Tool make sure brush is set to 0% hardness so edges fade out emphasize avoiding clone patterning by sampling over the same source area review Healing Brush make sure brush is set to 0% hardness so edges fade out demonstrate copying and pasting of skin patches make Marquee selection of skin area to copy copy by pressing Ctrl + C or go to Edit: Copy then paste by pressing Ctrl + V or got to Edit: Paste it should paste right on top of original selection in a new layer move pasted selection to appropriate new location feather the edge of the skin selection to fade it out select an Eraser brush and set the Hardness to 0% then brush around the contour match the skin color/tone go to Hue/Saturation (Image: Adjustments: Hue/Saturation or Ctrl + U) adjust sliders until you achieve a match use Opacity to blend the new skin into the source underneath see procedure on page 2
> procedure: select two source images heads must be frontal, looking perfectly straight ahead we can correct for head tilt using Rotate Image in Photoshop, but we can't fix anything else! heads must have very similar lighting with same direction of light source though we can flip one image so they match if needed original images must be large format and already closely cropped to the head look for two people with drastically different facial structures compare the following... eyebrow shape and thickness eye shape (edges of eyelids top and bottom) nose tip (including nostrils) lip shape mouth (both must be same- meaning one can't be showing teeth when the other isn't) ear shape jaw line (edge of jaw and chin) crop each image see page 4- Selecting and Cropping resample each image to 150dpi (unless both are originally higher) - if both images are the same resolution and above 150dpi: leave as is - if both images are above 150dpi but are different resolutions: change the resolution of the higher image down to match the lower one IS checked; change number to match) - if one image is above 150dpi and the other is below 150dpi: change both to 150dpi IS checked; change number 150) rotate each image so that both are perfectly vertical (if necessary) crop each source image so that they appear as close to identical as possible eyes, nose, mouth line up horizontally bottom of chins line up amount of neck/shoulder is extremely similar create document set dimensions to1650 pixels by 700 pixels set the resolution to what you cropped your sources to (they must all match) original cropped source images will be to the outside decide which source image will serve as the base for your alterations duplicate the layer of the image serving as your base and move it to the middle duplicate all three layers then merge them together you cannot use Clone Stamp or Healing Brush from different layers we are duplicating them before merging so we have a safety net to fall back on if we make a mistake procedure continued on page 3
begin melding the two images into one - morph bone structure first! adjust jaw line, chin and cheekbones in Liquify - morph nose/nostril shape in Liquify - morph eye shape in Liquify do the eyebrows next - morph lips/mouth shape in Liquify - morph ears shape in Liquify - repair skin skin becomes damaged through Liquify stretching and other methods you might employ use Clone Tool, Healing Brush, or copy and paste pieces over then blend in seamlessly > requirements: file specifications are adhered to all layers are named and organized properly final morphed image is an effective blend of two original source images not just simply swapped facial features all changes to the morphed image (center) are undetectable no clone patterning no stretched pixels alteration transitions are seamless lighting/shadowing is precise
> selecting and cropping initial photo selection both heads are large format both images are initially cropped close to the head both heads are front facing both heads have virtually identical lighting for example: Obama's photo was downloaded at 1282 px x 1893px Bush's photo was downloaded at 2267 px x 3000 px determine resolutions- read and follow carefully! go to Image: Image Size evaluate and alter resolutions - if both images are below 150dpi: change the resolution of both to 150 dpi IS NOT checked; change resolution number to if both images are the same resolution and above 150dpi: leave as is - if both images are above 150dpi but are different resolutions: change the resolution of the higher image down to match the lower one IS checked; change number to match) - if one image is above 150dpi and the other is below 150dpi: change both to 150dpi IS checked; change number 150) crop images set crop measurements in Control Panel at top width: 550 px height: 700 px resolution: 150 (unless higher as stipulated in the steps above) must crop to same size and proportions - distance from top of frame to top of skull (not hair) is identical - eyeline, bottom of nose, mouth and bottom of chin line up as closely as possible - amount of neck and shoulder match as closely as possible compare side by side go to Window: Arrange: Tile Vertically make sure Zoom percentage is identical
pitfalls feature swap only Here, the only changes that were made were switching one feature for another. there is no visual "average" between any features. This is the single biggest issue with this project. not enough facial changes Changes were only made to hair, clothing and earrings. No actual facial feature changes were made. clone patterning Changes are made apparent by clone patterning in the hair. Clone patterning is where you see something repeated within the image. source images too similar This person used source images that were so similar that when morphed together there is very little apparent change. (This person also only swapped features as opposed to true morphing.)
