Cropping a photo Why crop a photo to fit where the image will go? You will know if the photo is going to fit in the image placeholder as you expect it to. You can then choose to change the shape/size of the image placeholder and crop with the new size. StudioWorks: Photos will upload faster and will not have to be re-sized. InDesign: Files will work, refresh, save and upload faster. A photo from a 0 MP camera can be a 5 MB JPEG. StudioWorks Select the photo to find out the size. InDesign Select the photo to find out the size.. Click on the photo box to find the size to crop the photo.. In Photoshop, select the Cropping Tool and enter the Width and Height rounded up to the next pica (7.8 x 6.6 = 8 x 7). The resolution should always be 00.. Starting in the upper left hand corner of the photo, click, hold and drag to the bottom right hand corner. The cropping tool will stay in the exact same shape of the photo placeholder box from the page layout. When you let go, dotted lines will appear. The crop box can be moved and/or re-sized, but it will stay in the same proportions. Make sure the dotted lines are on the photo. Right click and choose Crop or press return and the photo will crop to the new size.. Photo is now the correct size for the image place holder. Go to File > Save As (see page 5) and give the photo a new name. The original photo will then be available if needed. \ 5 Photoshop Tips

Get the red eye out What causes red eye? The camera flash is reflecting off the retina (back of the eye). If a camera flashes twice, the first flash causes the pupil to become smaller and the second flash takes the photo. Because the pupil is smaller it reduces the chance for red eye occurring - thus called Red Eye Reduction.. Click and hold the Spot Healing Brush Tool, choose Red Eye Tool.. Place the Red Eye Tool (looks like a +) over the red eye.. Click once and the red eye is gone. 5 Photoshop Tips /

Adjusting a photo Do I really need to adjust every candid photo? Yes, no photo comes out of the camera ready to use. A basic adjustment will go a long way in making the photos look their best. It s worth the small amount of time used and yes, every candid should be adjusted.. Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. The graph is how Photoshop sees the photo. The right side of the graph is bright, left is dark, center is mid-tones. By moving the three sliders below the graph a simple adjust can be made.. Move the white slider to the left. Watch the nose, forehead and cheeks. When you see a loss of detail pull the slider back to the right.. Move the black slider to the right to add some shadow, usually where the graph starts to go up. 5. Move the gray (center slider) to the left a little to brighten the overall photo. 6. Un-check the Preview button and see the difference. Dark Mid Bright 5 After See the difference? Before Watch for loss of detail and move slider back. 6 \ 5 Photoshop Tips

5 Get rid of the pole Watch that background! Poles, wires, hands and more may be in the background causing a photo to be distractive. Here s a quick way to remove an unwanted element.. Click, hold and choose the Clone Stamp Tool.. Move the mouse over an area that will be used to replace an element. Hold down the Alt (Option on Mac) key. A circle with a cross hair will appear. Left click once. Release the mouse and keyboard. Move the mouse over the area to be covered, click, hold and brush (do not hold down any keys). Look for a + sign - that is what is being copied on to the element you are removing. Depending upon space you may have to retarget.. Take your time, this is detail work. Done right, no one would guess the photo had been altered. Four ways of Saving As JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PSD. JPEG is smallest in size. Use for Quality. Great for StudioWorks.. PNG keeps a transparent background that has been created. Must be RGB. Great for StudioWorks.. TIFF maintains a photo s quality and is great for InDesign.. PSD is great for working in layers or wanting to maintain a transparent background. Use with InDesign. a b JPEG PNG PSD TIFF 5 Photoshop Tips / 5

6 No more yellow Why do photos indoors tend to be dark and yellow? It s the lighting. Different types of light bulbs cast a hue that the camera picks up. Some of this can be controlled by changing the camera s white balance. But, the following example is typically what happens - dark and yellow.. Image > Adjustments > Levels. Click and hold the drop-down menu for Channel and choose Red.. Move only the white and black sliders in to where they begin to go up the graph.. Change the Channel to Green and move in the white and black sliders as in step. 5. Change the Channel to Blue and move in the white and black sliders as in steps and. 6. Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation 7. Look for the Master drop-down menu. 8. Click and hold on Master and choose Yellows. 9. For Hue type in: -, Saturation: - and Lightness:. These are good numbers to start with. Make adjustments for different conditions. 0. Image > Adjustments > Levels. Do a simple quick adjustment under RGB by moving in the white and black sliders and move the gray slider to the left to brighten the photo.. Window > History. Use the History menu to see the difference that has taken place. A dark, yellow picture is now usable photo. 6 \ 5 Photoshop Tips 5

7 Color splash and filters What is one way to have just part of a photo in color? There are a dozen ways of doing anything in Photoshop. Here is a way of making part of the photo in color and adding some filter effects. There are apps for the ipad and other devices that make adding a color splash easy.. Using the Lasso Tool, loosely draw around the part you want to leave in color.. Edit > Copy (in Photoshop there is no copy or paste when right clicking). Image > Mode > Grayscale. Image > Mode > RGB Color 5. Edit > Paste (anytime you paste in Photoshop a new Layer will be created). 6. Window > Layers - This will open the Layers window. You will see a Background layer and Layer. Which ever is highlighted is the active layer (most actions taken will only effect that layer). Click on the eye next to the Background layer to turn that layer off, while leaving Layer highlighted. Using the Eraser Tool remove any unwanted color. 7. Click on the box where the eye was for the Background layer and see the full photo. 8. In the Layers window, click on Background. The next steps will only effect the background. 9. Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur 5 0. Move the Radius slider to the right and release the mouse. The more to the right the more out of focus the Background layer becomes. This is one way of creating a depth of field effect. Click Cancel.. Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Move the Distance slider to the right and release the mouse. The more to the right the more motion the Background layer shows. Rotate the Angle and the direction of the motion changes. This is one way of creating a panning effect. Click Cancel.. Filter > Artistic > Film Grain. Using filters can give interesting effects to photos. Click OK. 5. Cool effect when used sparingly. 8 \ 5 Photoshop Tips 6 7

8 Cut-Outs What s the easiest way to do a cut-out? Have the subject stand in front of a white background (like a sheet) with a lot of light washing the background out and use a flash or softbox on the subject. What about cutting-out a candid? No magic button. The best are photos with contrasting backgrounds, but that does not happen often. There are several ways to accomplish a cut-out. Here s one.... Using the Lasso, loosely draw around the subject.. Edit > Copy. File > New. Click and hold the drop-down menu for Background Content and choose Transparent (the default of Photoshop is White). and click OK. 5. Edit > Paste 6. Choose the Magic Eraser Tool from the tool bar. 7. In the Control Palled set the Tolerance to a number that will select the background and not your subject. The lower the number the less color variation it will choose. The higher the number the greater the variation. Click on an area to be removed and the transparency checkerboard should show through Be watching for parts of your subject becoming transparent. When it happens STOP and Edit > Undo. If you notice after a few clicks, go to Window > History and move back to just before that point. Remember, History will only show your last twenty clicks When the Magic Eraser Tool can no longer select only the background, switch to the Eraser Tool. Choose a soft brush to keep the edges from being jagged.. It s okay to give the subject a slight haircut.. Edges may not be smooth around the subject when using the Magic Eraser, Magic Wand or a hard edged Eraser. Choose the Smudge Tool.. Lightly go along the edges of the subject - this will smooth out and fill in small gaps.. Save As. Consider saving a PSD version in case you need to go back and work on the file again. Definately save as a PSD if going to InDesign. StudioWorks - PNG. 0 \ 5 Photoshop Tips 7 8

9 0 PSD Use this format if you want to continue working on the file at a later date or for InDesign. Click OK Saving As PNG Use this format for StudioWorks and the background will stay transparent. Click OK 5 Photoshop Tips /

9 Partial Cut-Out How can I get part of a photo to go outside the picture? Moving the action outside a photo can create an interesting effect and draw attention to a particular part of a layout.. Using the Lasso, loosely draw around the subject.. Window > Layers. Double click on the word Background. A window will pop up wanting to rename the Background to Layer 0. Click OK.. Edit > Copy then Edit > Paste. In the Layers window click on the word Layer 0 (this selects that layer) choose the Rectangular Marquee Tool and draw a box around the part you do not want to delete from the background. 5. Select > Inverse 6. The dotted line should now cover the part of the background you want to delete. 7. Edit > Cut 8. Click on Layer in the Layers window. Select the Eraser Tool and eliminate and of the background not wanted outside the Layer 0 background. 9. Save As PSD for InDesign or PNG for Studioworks. \ 5 Photoshop Tips

0 Changing a color photo to grayscale When I change my color photos to grayscale they look flat and dingy. Good grayscale photos have sharp contrast. Adjust the photos in color to look their best, then change to grayscale and make an additional adjustment.. Image > Adjustments > Levels. Basic adjustments used on page or 6.. Image > Mode > Grayscale. Click Discard 5. Image > Adjustments > Levels 6. Make adjustments using the sliders. 7. File > Save As and save the file under another name \ 5 Photoshop Tips

Changing a white background to transparent After the background was cut out there is still a white background. Before deleting a background open the Layers window (Window > Layers) and change the Background layer to Layer 0. See below in step. The background was transparent but after we saved the file it turned white. If the file is saved as a JPEG the transparent background will turn white. Here s how to fix it.. Window > Layers. Double click on the word Background. A window will pop up wanting to rename the Background to Layer 0. Click OK.. Select the Magic Eraser Tool.. Set the tolerance to 5 and click in the white areas you want to delete.. With the white background now showing the transparent checkerboard go to File > Save As and save as a PNG for StudioWorks or PSD for InDesign. 5 Photoshop Tips / 5

Adding a casting shadow to a cut-out The cut-out has a transparent background, but there needs to be some added depth. A drop shadow looks stagnate. Add a casting shadow. It shows depth and the shadow is also transparent when saved as a PSD or PNG.. Window > Layers. Make sure your background layer is a layer and the background is transparent.. Image > Canvas Size. Change the width of the canvas size to be about twice the width of the subject. In the Anchor box click on the left center box. This makes the canvas size wider from the left.. Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow 5. Change the drop shadow settings to and Opacity of 0, Angle 0, Distance 5, Spread 5, Size 5 and click OK. 6. Layer > Layer Style > Create Layer 7. If you see this screen, click OK. This will create a new layer called Layer 0 s Drop Shadow (this splits the shadow from the subject). 8. Edit > Transform > Distort 9. Click on the top center point and pull down to the right. Click on the bottom center point.... and pull up under her feet to where you do not see the bottom of the shadow. Then press the return or Enter key to set the distortion.. Save as PSD for InDesign or PNG for StudioWorks \ 5 Photoshop Tips

Creating a duotone We re doing an all color book. What s a different way of making a photo stand out? Duotones can be very effective in creating a unique, trendy look. Think of a duotone as a grayscale photo that instead of being black and white is black and another color.. With the photo open and color adjusted, Image > Mode > Grayscale. 5. If this screen appears, just click Discard.. Photo is now grayscale.. Image > Mode > Duotone 5. The default of Photoshop is Monotone. 6. Click and hold on the drop-down menu next to Type and choose Duotone. 7. Click on the box filled with white near Ink This will open the Color Libraries. The default color is a yellow. 9. Click further down in blue area of the color bar and choose a light blue. Dark colors will look too dark. Remember it is white that is being replaced. 0. Image > Mode > RGB Color. If you are using InDesign you can choose CMYK. This step must be done to work properly in the layout program When finished - Save As. 0 8 \ 5 Photoshop Tips

Duotone using blue Duotone using green with a grayscale splash Duotone using yellow with a color splash Changing a Portrait Background We have some portraits with different backgrounds. Aggggghhhhhh!. Open the photo that needs a different background. Use the lasso to select the subject and copy.. Open a photo with the background needed that has a similar size subject.. Paste photo on to the new photo and move image to cover the person in the background. If needed use Edit > Transform > Scale, hold down the shift key, click and hold a corner and resize the new subject.. Turn off the eye in the Layers box for the Background Layer and select Layer. Remove any background unwanted with the eraser tool Turn on the eye for the Background Layer and turn off the eye on Layer. Make sure Background is selected. 6. Using the Cloning Tool, remove enough of the Background Layer subject needed. 7. Turn back on the eye of Layer and go to Layer > Flatten Image and Save As the photo you want to change the background of. 8. Yes, on occasion, you may have to give someone a haircut. 20 5 Changing a color I need to change the color on a piece of clip art and on a photo. Which tools are used depends on the photo or art. Here are two of many ways. Clip Art:. Open the art and go to Image > Mode > RGB Color.. Click and hold the Gradient Tool and choose the Paint Bucket Tool.. Click on the Foreground Color box (A), it opens the Color Picker. Choose the color range (B) and click on the color desired (C) and click OK. The selected color will appear in the Foreground Color box. A C B. Click on the Paint Bucket Tool then click on the part of the art needing the color change. Repeat steps and for additional color changes in the same file. Before closing - Save As another file name. Photo:. Click and hold on the Brush Tool and select the Color Replacement Tool. C A. Click on the Foreground Color box (A), it opens the Color Picker. Choose the color range (B) and click on the color desired (C) and click OK. The selected color will appear in the Foreground Color box.. With the Color Replacement Tool, begin brushing with the new color. Be careful only to brush the areas to be changed. Some colors, such as changing to black, do not work well with this method - it comes out gray. 0 \ 5 Photoshop Tips B
