Winter architecture Ironbridge China Factory Wintertime offers great opportunity for architectural photography, the Elbschlosser overlooking the River Elbe in Dresden on the proceeding pages shows how a low sun can make a south facing façade glow when the sun is low in the sky whilst a covering of snow gives a clean appearance to the surrounding land. Even in more subdued light great shots are to be had when the right architecture is found, the china factory above which dates back to the British industrial revolution is surely one of those buildings referred to by one poet of the day as those dark satanic mills takes on dark attitude with its brown brickwork giving the impression of a place you would rather not be. All images Stuart Brown

Winter architecture Goldener Reiter Trees devoid of leaves can open up views that we are deprived of the rest of the year, the view of the Goldener Reiter in Dresden on the facing page is one such example, unusually a north facing façade has been photographed in winter, a cold and wet January afternoon was specially chosen to ensure soft even lighting and a sheen on the cobblestones in the foreground, whilst the statue with its gold leaf glistens at the end of the street. All images Stuart Brown

Spring architecture Singapore Central Business District Here the effect of a spring morning is attained with the sun coming almost directly from the east as it illuminates the Singapore Bridge and lights the Fullerton Hotel situated at the base of the skyscrapers which house the city s financial institutions. If the foreground flowers were not present in this shot the asphalt of the street and predominantly grey cladding of the buildings would make the image a lot less exciting and rather drab. All images Stuart Brown

Spring architecture Singapore Marina Sands Remaining in Singapore this shot of the impressive Marina Sands Resort and science museum (curved metal clad building in the foreground designed to resemble and opening lotus lily) shows how a curved but generally north facing façade can turn to gold as the summer sun sets in the north east. In European latitudes it is often worth avoiding buildings surrounded by large trees at this time of year, their leaves will be blocking out light to large parts of the structure and will have turned a shade of dark green that is far less bright than when the leaves first appeared in the spring. The highly reflective metal and glass surfaces of the façade on these buildings is still glowing as the sun nears the horizon whilst the darker shadow areas show just how low the sun was when this shot was made. All images Stuart Brown

Autumn architecture Ironbridge, Telford Autumn is also a great season for architectural photography as the foliage on the trees turns to various shades of red, brown and yellow but also at this time of year the last flowers of the season bloom and there can still be some great colour in the flower beds surrounding bridges and buildings. This shot of the world famous Ironbridge shows how these colours complement the grey steel structure of the bridge at sunrise on a damp and overcast autumn morning which turned the clouds in the sky a shade of purple. All images Stuart Brown

City Silhouette, Dubai Architectural subjects can also make great silhouettes especially when either the morning or evening sun makes an interesting pattern in the sky. In this image the setting sun in Dubai has left a trial behind it which then makes it appear to plummet into the horizon giving an almost apocalyptic feel. All images Stuart Brown

Architectural Interiors Interiors also provide fascinating subjects, cathedrals and major railway stations often provide spectacular images whereas interior images of residential and business premises are usually confined to being published in promotional material. There are however other interior subjects which can make interesting images such as the snooker hall show here. Four full sized snooker tables arranged in a single row with ample space around them to play all the shots in the world and an elevated row of seats on one side of the room only have provided a challenging shot here. The large black luminaires hanging low over the tables has forced the camera away from the centre line of the room giving rise to a horizontal perspective in the end wall which is neatly offset by the row of off-centre snooker tables meeting it at a complimentary angle.
