4 CHARGE 2 Take pictures Charge the batteries Step 1 Charge the batteries Connect the power cable to the MH-53 battery charger ( 1 ) and insert the wall plug into a power outlet ( 2 ). The CHARGE lamp will light ( 3 ). 2 1 LITHIUM ION BATTERY CHARGER MH 53 CHARGE 3 Remove the terminal cover from EN-EL1 and insert the battery into the MH-53. Slide the battery into the charger terminals first. CHARGE MH 53 LITHIUM ION BATTERY CHARGER The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. CHARGE MH 53 LITHIUM ION BATTERY CHARGER
5 3 CH An exhausted battery can be fully recharged in about two hours. Step 2 LIT HIU M AR GE IO NB AT TE M RY H CH 53 AR GE R Attach the camera strap Attach the camera strap securely to the two eyelets on the camera body as shown below. The Lens Cap When replacing or removing the lens cap, press the tabs on either side of the cap to release the latch ( 1 ). To avoid losing the lens cap, use the cord provided to attach it to the camera as shown ( 2 ). 1 2 Charge the batteries / Attach the camera strap Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking.
6 4 Insert the battery Step 3 Insert the battery After confirming that the camera is off, open the battery-chamber cover Slide the battery-chamber cover latch ( ) to the position ( 1 ) and flip the battery-chamber cover open ( 2 ). 1 2 Insert the battery Insert the battery as shown in the label inside the battery-chamber cover, making sure the positive ( + ) and negative ( ) terminals are in the correct orientation. EN-EL1 2CR5 Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation. Close the battery-chamber cover Close the cover ( 1 ) and slide the latch ( ) to the position ( 2 ). Be sure that the battery-chamber cover is properly latched. 2 1
7 Step 4 Insert a memory card Open the memory card slot cover ( 1 ) A yellow notice describing memory card insertion is placed in the memory card slot at shipment. Remove the notice and read the instructions ( 2 ). Take pictures Insert a memory card Insert a memory card Check that the eject button is all the way down ( 1 ) and then insert a memory card as shown in the label inside the memory card slot cover ( 2 ). CF CARD Insert memory cards terminals first. Inserting the card upside down or backwards could damage the camera or the card. Check to be sure the card is in the correct orientation. 8 6 Turn the camera on Step 5 Turn the camera on Open the monitor Remove the lens cap and slide the mode selector to (shooting mode) Turn the camera on Auto Power Off If no operations are performed for about 1 minute (the default setting), the camera will enter standby mode and monitor will turn off automatically to save power. To reactivate the camera, press the button or press the shutter-release button halfway.
9 Take pictures Step 6 Choose a language and set the clock The first time the camera is turned on, a language-selection dialog will be displayed in the monitor. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. button are used to navigate the cam- The multi selector and era menus. DATE M Y Y To turn daylight saving time on or off, press multi selector down to highlight DaylightSaving and press multi selector right. When DaylightSaving is checked, time will automatically be advanced one hour. Before proceeding to Step 7, press multi selector up to highlight current time zone. Edit Day (order of Day, Month, and Year may differ in some areas). D : 00 D 01. DATE M DATE M Y Y : 00 Select Month. Repeat steps to edit Month, Year, hour, and minute. 10 : 15 Highlight D M Y. D DATE M Y Choose order in which Day, Month, and Year will be displayed : M 1/ F Exit to shooting mode.
11 Step 7 Format the memory card Take pictures Memory cards must be formatted before first use. Follow the steps below to format the card. Confirm that (auto) mode is selected If mode is not selected, press the button and rotate the command dial until the icon is displayed in the top left corner of the monitor. button 9 Format the memory card 8M 1/ F Press the Press the 8M button button to display the SHOOTING menu. 1/125 F Command dial Note that formatting memory cards permanently deletes any data they may contain. Be sure to copy any photographs and other data you wish to keep to a computer before proceeding.

13 Step 8 Take pictures Take pictures The steps below explain how to take pictures in auto mode, an automatic point and shoot mode in which most settings are controlled by the camera. Auto mode is selected by default the first time the camera is used. For more information on shooting modes, see the Guide to Digital Photography with the COOLPIX Check indicators in the monitor. 11 Take pictures Battery level indicator 8M 1/ F Number of exposures remaining The battery level is shown in the monitor as follows: Display NO ICON WARNING!! BATTERY EXHAUSTED Description Battery fully charged. Low battery. If flash fires, monitor turns off while Speedlight recharges. Battery exhausted. Recharge and reinsert battery, or use spare battery.
14 12 Take pictures Ready the camera Hold the camera steadily in both hands. Avoid pressing the buttons on the left side of the camera body. Be careful not to obstruct the red-eye reduction lamp. Don t Block the Shot To prevent incorrectly exposed or partially obscured pictures, keep fingers and other objects away from the lens and flash window. If the subject is too dark, the built-in Speedlight will pop up automatically. Be careful not obstruct the Speedlight. A warning will appear in the monitor or viewfinder if the Speedlight is prevented from popping up.
15 Take pictures Frame the subject Position the subject in the center of the frame. Pictures can be framed in the monitor or the viewfinder. Monitor button Press the monitor button to toggle between the monitor and viewfinder. 13 Take pictures Zoom buttons Press T to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. Viewfinder Focus If the image in the electronic viewfinder seems blurred, rotate the diopter adjustment control until the image is in sharp focus. When operating the diopter control with your eye to the viewfinder, care should be taken to avoid accidentally putting your finger in your eye.
16 14 Take pictures Focus Press the shutter-release button halfway to set focus and exposure. Focus and exposure will lock while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Flash indicator Focus indicator With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check the focus and flash indicators in the monitor or electronic viewfinder: Flash indicator (red) Focus indicator (green) On Blinks Off On Blinks Flash will fire when picture is taken. Flash charging. Flash off or not required. Subject in focus. Camera unable to focus on subject at center of frame. Using focus lock, focus on another subject at same distance, then recompose picture and shoot. Take the picture Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. To prevent blur, press the shutter-release button down smoothly. The camera has a two-stage shutter-release button. Press the shutter-release button halfway to focus. Press it the rest of the way down to release the shutter and record a picture.
17 Step 9 View pictures Press the button A picture will be displayed in the monitor. (quick review) button Take pictures 15 View pictures Press once Press twice Press the button once to display images in top left corner of monitor, twice to view images full screen. View additional pictures Press the multi selector down or right to view pictures in the order recorded, up or left to view pictures in reverse order. To end image review, press the shutter release button halfway. Press the shutter-release button all the way down to take a picture. View previous picture View next picture Turn the camera off The lens will retract and the camera displays will turn off. Now that you ve taken a few pictures, you can transfer (copy) them to a computer, where they can be viewed, edited, and organized.

19 17 Step 1 Install Nikon View Before Installing Nikon View Turn off any virus-checking software Exit all other applications that may be running Uninstall Existing Versions of Nikon View and Nikon Capture Version 1.x Before installing Nikon View, you will need to uninstall Nikon Capture version 1.x (if installed) and any earlier versions of Nikon View. Install Nikon View Important Connecting the Camera to a Computer Be sure to install Nikon View before connecting the camera to your computer. If the Add New Hardware wizard is displayed when the camera is connected, click Cancel to exit.
20 18 Install Nikon View Windows Installing Nikon View (Windows) Important Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional When installing, using, or uninstalling Nikon View, log on as the Computer administrator (Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional) or Administrator (Windows 2000 Professional). Turn the computer on and wait for Windows to start up. Insert the Nikon View installer CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The Install Center program will launch automatically and a language selection dialog will be displayed. Select a language and click Next. If the Language Selection Dialog Is Not Displayed Select My Computer from the Start menu (Windows XP Home Edition / Windows XP Professional) or double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop (other versions of Windows) and double-click the CD-ROM (NKVIEW6) icon in the My Computer window. Click Easy Install. The standard install includes: A PTP driver (Windows XP only) Coolpix Camera Drivers (Mass Storage driver) (Windows 98 SE only) Panorama Maker QuickTime 5 Nikon View
21 Install Nikon View and transfer pictures 19 The first components to be installed are the camera drivers. What drivers are installed depends on the computer s operating system. Windows XP Home Edition/Professional Follow the on-screen instructions to install the PTP driver. On some systems a Microsoft Wizard may install the PTP driver. Click Finish or OK after the installation of the PTP driver. Windows 2000 Professional / Windows Millennium Edition (Me) No drivers are installed. Proceed to Step. Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Coolpix Camera Drivers. Install Nikon View Windows Installation of Panorama Maker opens with a language selection dialog. Choose a language and click OK.
22 20 Install Nikon View Windows The opening dialog of the Panorama Maker install wizard will be displayed; click Next. After reading the license agreement, click Yes to accept the agreement and proceed with installation. The destination folder for Panorama Maker will be displayed under Destination Folder. Click Next to install Panorama Maker to this folder, or click Browse to select another destination. Click Next to install Panorama Maker. Finish to exit the Panorama Maker
23 Install Nikon View and transfer pictures 21 Installation will continue with Quick Time 5. No registration number is required; leave the registration information blank and click Next. The Nikon View setup program will now start. After reading the license agreement, click Yes to accept the agreement and proceed with installation. Next to install Nikon View to this folder, or click Browse to select another destination. Click Yes to create the destination folder. Install Nikon View Windows Yes to create a shortcut to Nikon View on No to proceed without creating a
24 22 Install Nikon View Windows Finish to exit the Nikon View in- Yes to restart your computer. After the computer restarts, remove the Nikon View installer CD- ROM from the CD-ROM drive. If the Select Language dialog is displayed after the computer restarts, click Quit to close the dialog and then remove the Nikon View installer CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive. This completes installation of Nikon View. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer.
25 Install Nikon View and transfer pictures 23 Installing Nikon View (Macintosh) Important Mac OS X When installing, using, or uninstalling Nikon View, log in to the Admin account. Turn the computer on and wait for it to start up. ROM into the CD-ROM drive, double-click the CD-ROM (Nikon View 6) icon on the desktop and then double-click the Welcome icon. A language-selection dialog will be displayed; select a language and click Next. Mac OS 9 The language-selection dialog will be displayed automatically when you insert the Nikon View installer CD-ROM. CarbonLib (Mac OS 9 Only) CarbonLib 1.6 or later is required to install this Nikon software. If the installer detects an earlier version of CarbonLib, a message will be displayed. Click Install to upgrade to CarbonLib 1.6. Once installation is complete, be sure to restart the computer before going on to install Nikon software. Install Nikon View Macintosh
26 24 Install Nikon View Macintosh Click Install to begin installation of the following software: Panorama Maker Nikon View QuickTime 5 (Mac OS 9 only) Installation of Panorama Maker opens with a license agreement. Click Accept to accept the agreement and proceed with installation. Click Install to install Panorama Maker. Click OK to complete installation of Panorama Maker. Enter your administrator name and password. Mac OS X Enter your administrator name and password and click OK. Mac OS 9 The Authenticate dialog will not be displayed. Proceed to Step.
27 Install Nikon View and transfer pictures 25 The Nikon View license agreement will be displayed. After reading the license agreement, click Accept to accept the terms and conditions of the agreement and view the ReadMe file. Take a few moments to read this file, which may contain important information that could not be included in this manual. After viewing the ReadMe file, click Continue to proceed with installation. Click Install to install Nikon View. Add to Dock/Create an Alias Click Yes to add Nikon View to the Dock (Mac OS X) or create an alias to Nikon View on the desktop (Mac OS 9). Mac OS X Mac OS 9 Install Nikon View Macintosh
28 26 Install Nikon View Macintosh Click Quit to complete installation of Nikon View. Installing QuickTime 5 (Mac OS 9 Only) Under Mac OS 9, installation of QuickTime 5 will begin when installation of all other software is complete. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. When the Registration dialog is displayed, click Continue. Do not supply registration information. Click Restart to restart your computer. After the computer restarts, remove the Nikon View installer CD- ROM from the CD-ROM drive. If the Select Language dialog is displayed after the computer restarts, click Quit to close the dialog and then remove the Nikon View installer CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive.
29 Install Nikon View and transfer pictures 27 Mac OS X (Version ) Before connecting the camera, select Applications Select None from the Finder Go menu and double-click the Image Capture icon. The Image Capture dialog will be displayed. Select None from the Automatic Task and Hot Plug Action menus and close the Image Capture dialog. If you install Apple iphoto Select None software after you install Nikon View, repeat this step to prevent both iphoto and Nikon View from starting when you connect your camera. Mac OS X (Version 10.2) Before connecting the camera, select Applications from the Finder Go menu and double-click the Image Capture icon. The Image Capture dialog will be displayed. Select Preferences Select No application from the Image Capture menu to display the Image Capture Preferences dialog. In the Camera Preferences area, select No application from the When a camera is connected, open menu. Mac OS X (Version 10.3) Before connecting the camera, select Applications from the Finder Go menu and double-click the Image Capture icon. The Image Capture dialog will be displayed. Select Preferences from the Image Capture menu to display the Image Capture Preferences dialog. In the Camera area, select No application from the When a camera is connected, open menu. Select No application This completes installation of Nikon View. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer. Install Nikon View Macintosh
30 28 Transfer pictures Step 2 Transfer pictures Use a Reliable Power Source When transferring pictures between the camera and the computer, use a fullycharged EN-EL1 battery. If in doubt, charge the battery before beginning transfer or use an EH-53 AC adapter (available separately). Do not, under any circumstances, use another make or model of AC adapter. Turn the camera off and insert a memory card as described on page 5. Turn the computer on and wait for the operating system to start up. Connect the camera to the computer as shown in the illustration, using the USB cable provided. UC-E1 USB cable USB Hub The camera may not function as expected when connected via a USB hub or keyboard.
31 Install Nikon View and transfer pictures Turn the camera on The camera will automatically be recognized and registered as a new device. Once the camera has been registered, the Nikon Transfer component of Nikon View will be displayed in the computer monitor. The camera monitor will remain blank. 29 Transfer pictures Windows Macintosh AutoPlay (Windows XP Home Edition/Professional) A dialog similar to that shown at right will be displayed when the camera is turned on (if the USB option in the camera setup menu is set to Mass Storage, a Removable Disk dialog will be displayed; otherwise the dialog will show the camera name). Select Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Nikon View 6 and click OK to start Nikon View. To bypass this dialog in the future, check Always do the selected action. See Troubleshooting in the Nikon View Reference Manual for information on what to do if Nikon Transfer fails to start automatically.
32 30 Transfer pictures Click the button in the Nikon Transfer window. All pictures on the memory card will be transferred to your computer. Windows Macintosh During Transfer While transfer is in progress, do not: Disconnect the USB cable Turn the camera off Remove the battery or the memory card Disconnect the AC adapter Failure to observe these precautions could interfere with normal functioning of both the camera and the computer.
33 Install Nikon View and transfer pictures 31 Once transfer is complete, your pictures will be displayed in the Nikon Browser component of Nikon View (the appearance of the Nikon Browser window may differ in some areas). Windows The default destination folder for transferred pictures is the My Pictures or My Documents folder. Pictures will have file names of the form Imgnnnn, where nnnn is a four-digit number starting from Transfer pictures Macintosh The default destination folder for transferred pictures is the Pictures folder (Mac OS X) or the Documents folder (Mac OS 9). Pictures will have file names of the form Imgnnnn, where nnnn is a fourdigit number starting from 0001.
34 32 Transfer pictures plete and you can disconnect the camera. Before turning the camera off or disconnecting the USB cable, remove the camera from the system as described below. Windows XP Home Edition / Windows XP Professional Click the Safely Remove Hardware icon ( ) in the taskbar and select Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device from the menu that appears. Windows 2000 Professional Click the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon ( ) in the taskbar and select Stop USB Mass Storage Device from the menu that appears. Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Click the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon ( ) in the taskbar and select Stop USB Disk from the menu that appears. Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) In My Computer, click with the right mouse button on the removable disk corresponding to the camera and select Eject from the menu that appears.
35 Install Nikon View and transfer pictures 33 Mac OS X Drag the NO_NAME camera volume into the Trash. Mac OS 9 Drag the untitled camera volume into the Trash. Transfer pictures Nikon View Nikon View is made up of four components: Nikon Transfer, Nikon Browser, Nikon Viewer, and Nikon Editor. More information on Nikon View can be found using on-line help or by reading the Nikon View Reference Manual included on the reference CD-ROM provided with your camera. Nikon Transfer Nikon Transfer is used to transfer (copy) to your computer the pictures stored on the camera memory card. Nikon Browser Nikon Browser lists the pictures on your computer as thumbnail images. Nikon Viewer Use Nikon Viewer to inspect your pictures in detail. Nikon Editor Use Nikon Editor to edit your pictures. You have now taken pictures and copied them to your computer. This completes the COOLPIX 8700 Quick Start Guide. To make the most of all the features of your Nikon digital camera, be sure to read the Guide to Digital Photography.
