With the flatbed scanner WideTEK A2, Image Access offers an efficient scanner which covers a wide scope of applications due to its versatility. Its integrated web based user interface makes all functions available in structured menus. This operation manual is designed to lead you through all steps that will arise when using the flatbed scanner WideTEK A2. For this reason, we ask you to read the operation manual attentively before starting to work with the device. 4 About this Manual All information about the normal operation and behavior of this device is found in this. The manual is written for people who only operate the device and do not perform setup and adjustment procedures. All device elements and software functions are described in detail, although some of them might never be used. This manual does not cover any application software. Refer to the appropriate manual to learn about the application software. Setup and Assembly Manual The Setup and Assembly Manual is written for technical staff with some basic mechanical as well as software skills. Many resellers will offer on-site installation; therefore, large parts or all of the setup and assembly manual might not be of interest to the reader. The access level at which these setup and adjustment processes are performed is called Poweruser and is password protected from access by the normal operator. 13 A Hardware Setup A.1 Safety Notes Read and ensure that you understand the safety notes. The safety notes have been written to ensure your protection and for your safety. The WideTEK A2 scanner fulfills all safety requirements of the following standards: EN 60950, Safety of Equipment in the Information Technology (European Standard) UL 60950, Safety of Information Technology Equipment (US Standard) CSA C22.2 No (Canadian Standard) The mark which certify the successful completion of the tests are found on the connectors side of the device housing. A.1.1 Marking of Safety Notes All safety notes are marked with a warning sign. A description of the potential hazard is found on the right side of the warning sign. Safety Note! Example text. 14 A.2 General Information This operation manual describes all settings which are available through the integrated Scan2Net user interface. Variations depending on the device type are indicated below the chapters headline. The WideTEK A2 is connected by the integrated network card to the network. Before the first use of the WideTEK A2 the IP address, the subnet mask and the gateway settings must be set. These settings depend on the parameters of the network where the WideTEK A2 is used. In chapter 0 all necessary steps to configure the WideTEK A2 properly are described in detail. A.3 Content on Delivery The WideTEK A2 is delivered with the following: Cross-Over cable with green connectors Network cable Power cable Folder with reference sheets for testing purpose Transport locks Important: Keep the transport locks, the washers as well as the adherent label for future use. 15 A.5 Removing the transport lock Attention The transport lock has to be removed before starting the device the first time! A label at the front side of the device housing marks the position of the transport lock. Picture 2: Position of transport lock Lift up the scanner at the front side and turn it to the small back side to remove the transport lock. Ensure that the cover can not open unintentionally. 16 The transport locks are marked with adherent labels. Picture 4: Transport lock If the scanner is placed on the small back side, the transport locks are easily accessible. Remove the transport lock with an appropriate tool. Picture 5: Removing transport lock Important: Keep the transport lock, the washers as well as the adherent label for future use. The transport lock and the washers must be inserted before every transport of the WideTEK A2. This will prevent the sensitive components inside the flatbed scanner against damages. Page 16

17 A.6 Device Location A.6.1 Environment Choose a location that complies with the limits of temperature and humidity. Refer to chapter D.3 for detailed environmental specification. A.6.2 Table Place the WideTEK A2 on a flat and solid base. The load-carrying capacity of the base should exceed the device weight. It is recommended that the table hold at least three times the weight of the device. The table also should not shake or move to avoid image distortions. A.6.3 Power outlet Ensure that the power outlet is always accessible. This will help to separate the device from the power outlet in case of an emergency. A.6.4 Ambient Light Choose a location with normal illumination. Direct sunlight or a bright floodlight shining on the glass plate will reduce the quality of images or cause malfunction of the unit. 18 A.7 Connecting A.7.1 to the Power Source Check the following items before connecting to the wall outlet: The wall outlet is in perfect condition and properly grounded. The power cable is undamaged. The wall outlet is equipped with a correctly dimensioned fuse. Refer to the chapter D.1. Turn the device off before plugging or unplugging any cable. Connect the wall outlet and the power supply connector at the WideTEK A2 with the power cable. A Main Power Switch The main power switch is located directly above the power supply connector. The positions on the main power supply are marked with: 0 (zero) Main power off I Main power on A.7.2 the Network Cable The WideTEK A2 is delivered with a Cross-Over cable (green connectors) and a network cable. Use the Cross-Over cable to connect the WideTEK A2 directly to a PC via a network card. Use the network cable to connect the WideTEK A2 to a network. The port for connecting to the network is located next to the power supply connector (Picture 1). A.7.3 the Foot Pedal Switch The scan sequence can also be activated by an optional foot pedal switch. The foot pedal switch connector is located right beside the stand-by button. It is marked with FS-1. Note: Picture 6: Foot pedal connector Switch the WideTEK A2 off before connecting / disconnecting the foot pedal switch to the jack plug. Page 18

19 A.8 Switching to Stand-by Mode The main power switch is used to switch the WideTEK A2 scanner to stand-by mode. It also switches the WideTEK A2 scanner completely off. This is only necessary before transporting or when the scanner is not used for a longer time period. Picture 7: Main power switch Press the main power switch to position I to set the WideTEK A2 into stand-by mode. A.9 Starting the WideTEK A2 Press the green stand-by button to switch the WideTEK A2 from stand-by mode to operating mode. The start sequence takes approximately one minute. After pressing the green stand-by button, the lamp lights up. The start sequence takes approximately one minute. During this time, some internal routines check all device components. 20 A Reset Configuration During the start sequence the display shows RESET NETWORK CONFIGURATION? Picture 10: Reset Network Configuration While this message is displayed, all values of the network address can be reset to the default values. Resetting of the values is done by pressing the green START button while the message is visible. After pressing the START button the display shows the safety query ARE YOU SURE? Press the START button again to confirm the query. After that all values are reset. The IP address at delivery is The subnet mask at delivery is A.10 Stopping the WideTEK A2 Scanner Press the green stand-by button in order to switch off the WideTEK A2 scanner. During the switch-off sequence the display shows Picture 11: Shutdown message The mirror unit and the lamps unit move to the home position at the left side of the scan area. After that the lamps and the display turn off. Page 20

21 A.11 Before transporting A.11.1 Inserting the transport lock Attention The transport lock must be inserted before transporting the device! Before inserting the transport lock the mirror unit and the illumination unit must be moved into transport position. Switch on the WideTEK A2 with the green stand-by button. The device now checks and initializes all components. The mirror unit and the illumination unit are moved into the start position. After completing the start process the display shows READY TO SCAN. Switch off the flatbed scanner now by the green stand-by button. The mirror unit and the illumination unit will be moved into the transport position (left stop). Note: Do the following steps with the assistance of a second person. This will avoid damages to the scanner. One person slowly lifts up the scanner at the connectors side (right side of the housing, see Picture 1), while the second person stabilizes the device on the opposite side against shifting. Picture 12: Lift up the flatbed scanner and stabilize it against shifting Hint: If the mirror unit and the illumination unit do not move to the transport position because of an error, lift up the scanner - as described above and knock carefully on the connectors side. The mirror unit and the illumination unit will slide slowly into the transport position because of their own weight. Page 21

22 Place the scanner on the narrow side and stabilizes it in this position. Screw in the transport lock on the marked positions. Picture 13: Thread for transport lock. Important: Insert the transport lock always in combination with the washers. Use three washers on each transport lock. Without using the washers severe damages may occur to the scanner. Do not use an electric powered tool to screw in the transport lock. This could result in severe damages of the mirror unit and illumination unit. 23 B Software Setup B.1 Network Parameters at Delivery IP address: Subnet mask: Gateway: Broadcast: B.2 Setting IP Address, Gateway and Subnet Mask The values for the IP address, the gateway, and the subnet mask are set by using the integrated S2N user interface. All necessary steps to individually configure these parameters are described in the following chapters. B.2.1 Connecting the WideTEK A2 directly to a PC Important: A network adapter must be installed in the computer to which the WideTEK A2 is to be connected. Use the Cross-Over cable to connect WideTEK A2 and PC directly. B.2.2 Adapting the PC s Network Parameters Start the network configuration of your computer. Set the IP address in the network configuration of the PC to an address in the same subnet as the IP address of the scanner. Example: The IP address of the WideTEK A2 is: The computer should get the address: xxx Insert for xxx any arbitrary value between 1 and 40. Set the subnet mask of the computer in the network configuration identical to the default value of the scanner Windows 9x / ME/ NT: Close the network configuration and restart the computer to activate the changed settings. Windows 2000 / XP: Close the network configuration to activate the new settings. A restart is not necessary. Page 23

24 B.2.3 Configure the Scanner Recommended browser: Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher Netscape Navigator 7.0 or higher Mozilla 1.2 or higher Configuration of the WideTEK A2 is done via the integrated user interface. 25 The next window shows a selection of three login-levels. Select the login level Poweruser. Picture 16: Selection of three login-levels To use the login level Poweruser it is necessary to enter a password. A password entry window will appear. The default user name and password for the login-level Poweruser is: Poweruser Enter this password in both lines of the request mask. 26 The Poweruser login level offers various command buttons for configuration purposes. Picture 18: Selectable items in login level Poweruser Find the column S2N Base Settings. Select Network to set the network parameters of the WideTEK A2. Page 26

27 B Network Parameters A network configuration screen will appear. IP Configuration Method: Manual Host Name: IP Address: Subnet Mask: Picture 19: Configure network parameters Automatically set. Can not be changed. Enter the IP address. The IP address must identify the scanner clearly in the network in which it is installed. Enter a valid value for your network here. In most cases this is: Ask your network administrator in case of deviations. Default Gateway: Enter the value for the gateway here. If no gateway is used, enter the scanner IP address. Broadcast: Enter the highest possible value here. Ask your network administrator for the correct value. All of the above mentioned settings must correspond to the network in which the scanner is used. Click on the button Apply to store the changed settings. NOTE: After saving the changed IP address the connection to the scanner is lost. To reconnect to the scanner, enter the new IP address in your browser. Page 27

28 B Activate the New Settings The modified settings of the network parameters are transmitted after clicking the Apply button. After modifying the parameters the WideTEK A2 must be restarted. Click on the button Reboot to restart the scanner. Picture 20: Request to restart the scanner After clicking the Reboot button the WideTEK A2 shows the following screen. After the restart the unit is accessible at the new IP address. Enter the new IP address to reconnect to the scanner. Picture 21: System Reboot message Page 28

29 B.2.4 WideTEK A2 in the Network Remove the Cross-Over cable from the network connector of the WideTEK A2. Connect the WideTEK A2 to the network. Use the network cable delivered with the unit. Note: Do not use the Cross-Over cable. The Cross-Over cable is used only to connect the WideTEK A2 scanner and a single computer by network card. B.3 The Integrated User Interface B.3.1 The Start Screen Start your browser. Enter the IP address of the scanner. The start screen of the integrated user interface opens. The selected language defines the labeling of the buttons. Picture 22 shows the start screen with english as selected setting. This is the default setting. Click the button Start Scan Application. 30 B.3.2 The Main Screen After launching the scan application, the main screen of the integrated user interface will open Picture 23: User interface main window The main window is structured into three sections. The section on the right (#1 in the picture above) shows a menu bar with four menu items: Options Paper Camera Settings The section on the left (#3 in the picture above) shows the buttons for preview scan (Preview) and main scan (Scan Now). The STOP button switches the scanner off. The seven control buttons in the lower section (#2 in the picture above) of the screen control the output modes. Page 30

31 B.3.3 Help Function Click here to activate the help function. On extensive information texts a scroll bar on the right side of the window allows to move the text upwards or downwards. A click on the button Close Window closes the help text. 33 B Color mode Picture 27: Available color modes The WideTEK A2 scanner offers five color modes. The available modes are: True Color: True Color mode with 24 bit color depth. Indexed Colors: Reduces the number of colors in the image to 256 colors. In this color mode the selectable file formats are reduced to TIFF and PDF. Grayscale: Line Art: Photo: 8 bit grayscale mode. 1 bit black/white (bitonal) mode. 1 bit black/white (bitonal) mode with dithering. Dithering increases file size, but can improve delicate details in the image. Page 33

34 B Special feature for Line Art and Photo Mode Picture 28: Parameters for Line Art mode In Line Art and Photo mode two additional settings can be selected: 1. The Invert function is available. Click on the radio button to switch Invert on (Yes) or to switch Invert off (No). 2. In menu item Camera (see chapter B.4.4) the automatic threshold function (Auto Threshold) can be selected. Only if the option Book Fold Correction is installed the user can activate this function at the item Document Processing. Please note that all changes are immediately valid. That is, new settings and new values are immediately transferred to the scanner. Page 34

35 B File Format This setting defines the file format in which the scanned images are stored. Available formats are: JPEG TIFF PNM PDF Picture 29: Selectable file formats Depending on the selected file format, the menu item title right beside changes. Also the content of this menu item can change. See Picture 26, Picture 27 and Picture 28. Please note that all changes are immediately valid. That is, new settings and new values are immediately transferred to the scanner. Page 35

36 JPEG Picture 30: JPEG quality in percent Quality: Defines the quality of the image in percent. TIFF Picture 31: Selection of TIFF compression Compression: Defines the compression method used for the TIFF images. Page 36

37 PNM Picture 32: Data format PNM Select PNM to store raw data of the scanned image. No options are available for this data format. PDF Picture 33: Data format PDF When PDF file format is active, two PDF standards can be selected. Below the title PDF Compression clicking on Options opens another window. Here the PDF standard and the Security System can be selected. Page 37

38 B Document Mode Flat Mode: This is the standard scan mode. The focusing for the entire scan area is set in one level. Book Fold Correction: This scan mode is only available with the Book Fold Correction option installed. Following the link (Options) opens a window to set the parameters for the book fold correction. An invalid combination of scan area size and portrait format returns the setting to the last valid setting or an error message is displayed. The response is determined by the browser. B Additional Margin Range for Additional Margin: -300 to 300 pixel A positive value adds a margin in vertical and horizontal direction to the scanned image. A negative value reduces the image in vertical and horizontal direction by the selected size. Example: Resolution = 200 dpi (dpi = dots per inch) and additional margin = 200 pixel adds a border of one inch to the image. Click on the slider to set the desired value or enter a value in the field beside the slider. B Background Density [Binary] Range for Background Density: 5 to 100 Controls the sensitivity of the automatic document size recognition. In order to define the maximum angle which is corrected, click onto the slider or enter a value in the field beside the slider. If no JAVA Plug-In is installed or if the JAVA Plug-In is not activated, the size and the position of the scan area can be defined via numerical values. 2. If the option Use Java UDF in the menu item Settings is activated (see chapter B.4.5.4), the size and position of the scan area are defined via a rectangle drawn with the mouse. Click onto the + button to increment the shown value at 1 or click the button to decrement the shown value at Enter the desired value into the field between the + button and the button. To transfer the entered value press the TAB button on your PC keyboard or click with the mouse into any other field. Any change of the set values will change the size of the red dashed line in the schematic scan area. The maximum size of each value depends on the other one in the same direction: Maximum (vertical) = Bottom Border + Height Maximum (horizontal) =Zero Offset + Width If one of the allowed maximum values is exceeded, an error message will be displayed: The entered values will be ignored and the maximum valid value will be displayed. After defining the scan area click the Preview button or the Scan Now button to start the scan sequence. 49 B User defined format, JAVA activated The Java UDF allows to select the scan area from a preview with a mouse. For using the Java UDF an installation of the Java run time environment (JRE) is required. The Internet Explorer and most common third party internet browsers usually offer a preinstalled JRE. In the browser the execution of Java programs must be allowed. The SUN JRE version 5.06 or newer is recommended, although the Java UDF is compatible with all JRE versions down to version 4.0. When JAVA is activated (see chapter B.4.5.4) the size and the position of the scan area are defined via a rectangle drawn with the mouse. Click on User defined formats. The contrast function sets the contrast level of the scanned image. Click on the slider bar to change the contrast setting or enter a numeric value into the field beside the slider. B Exposure Value range from 0 (zero) to 100. Sets the threshold value for the black cut function or for the auto exposure function. No Function disabled. 54 B Image Sharpness Value range from 7 to +7. Values in the positive range from 0 (zero) to +7 will improve the acuteness of details in the image. Values in the negative range from 0 (zero) to 7 will smooth the details in the image. B Eliminate Moiré Value range from 0 (zero) to 100. Eliminates disturbing color patterns. To reduce the color patterns (Moiré) the scanned images will be blurred, i.e. they are softened. Use the slider to change the setting for this function or enter a numeric value into the field beside the slider. B Gamma Value range from 1.0 to 2.5. This function sets the Gamma value for the scanned image. Predefined values for the most common systems are available by selecting one of the three settings srgb, Windows & SGI and Mac OS. B Color Gain This setting controls the amplification of each red, blue and green color channel separately. 60 B Print Use this function to print the scanned image on the system printer. After the scan sequence is finished a preview window opens as well as a second window to select the desired printer. All printers installed on the system can be found in this selection window. After clicking the OK button the print starts. The preview window can be closed when the print is finished. B Printer Preset Currently five printer presets are available. To select a printer, click on the selection button to open the list of the preset printers. Click on the desired printer s name. All printer parameters will be refreshed. To change the preset name click on Change Name. A window, see picture on the left, opens. Place the cursor into the field with the preset name. 61 B Printer Parameters The printer must be identified by its IP address or can be selected from the SMB printer queue (list). Depending on the selected Connection Type the parameters to be set differ. Connection Type IP Networking The address and the port must be set corresponding to the network where the printer is installed. The recommended port is named in brackets. The connection timeout can be selected from the list. The following parameters, starting with Data Format are identically for both Connection Types. 64 B FTP Upload Transfers a scanned image by using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). The network in which the scanner is integrated must permit the transfer by FTP. To enter the parameters (FTP address, Login name, password etc.) click on Options below the FTP Upload button. Picture 61 shows as an example the factory values of the scanner when it is delivered. B Transaction Mode Interactive Select Transaction Mode Interactive if the addressee of the scanned images changes frequently. 73 B.8 Updating the Firmware B.8.1 Download Current firmware updates for your scanner are available in the Customer Service Portal of Image Access internet page. Execute the following steps to update the scanner firmware. 1. Start your internet browser and enter the Image Access internet page address: 2. Follow the link Support, Downloads Customer Service Portal 3. Enter as user name and password Guest (case sensitivity) and click the send button. 4. Click on Actions Download S2N Device Updates. 5. Enter the serial number and the firmware version number of your scanner. Consider the example, while entering the serial number. Click on continue. The next window shows the firmware version which is available for download. The file is named s2nfirm-x.yy.zip, where x.yy stands for the firmware version number. For example: s2nfirm-4.04.zip Additionally you will get an information whether this is the current firmware version. Information text Return to get newer version after update is installed. The most recent version is already installed. No action required. Resulting action Further firmware versions are available to download. Repeat step 1 to 6 up to the most current firmware version. While repeating the steps, always enter the number of the software saved at last. No further actions are necessary. 6. Save the file and/or the files in a directory which is accessible from your scanner. When the downloads are finished, install the firmware updates in ascending order. Page 73

Choose the login level Poweruser. 6. Login with user name Poweruser and password "Poweruser". 7. Find the section Updates & Uploads. Click the Update Firmware" Button. 8. Place the Line Reference Sheet S2N LRS-200, which comes with the scanner, or a highly detailed document (small, fine print) on the scanner as shown on the screen. 3. Press the "Next Step" button. Some measurements will be executed. 4. After the Auto Focus function is finished the results will be displayed. 5. Click in section Controls the button New Values to repeat the measurement. Or 6. B X-Adjust This function adjusts the horizontal middle of the S2N Scan2Net scanner's scan area. 1. Press the "X-Adjust" button. 2. Remove all documents from the scanner's glass plate. 3. 78 B Y-Adjust This function adjusts the vertical start position accordingly to the documents bed edge. 1. Press the "Y-Adjust" button. 2. Remove all documents from the scanner's glass plate. 3. Press the "Next Step" button. 4. After the Y-Adjust function is finished the results will be displayed. 5. Click in section Controls the button New Values to repeat the measurement. Or 6. Click in section Menu Controls the button Back to Adj. Menu to return to the adjustments menu (see Picture 78). B Adjust White Balance This function allows the user to adjust the S2N Scan2Net scanner's white balance according to the scanned paper quality. Different paper qualities used for the white balance adjustment will cause different scan results. With this function the user can easily adjust the scanner to a white balance which matches its specific needs best. 1. Find the section White Balance Adjustment (see Picture 78) and click the button White Balance. 2. Place at least two sheets of white paper on top of each other, e.g. paper for copiers or laser printers, on the scanner as shown. This is necessary to make it more opaque. The back of the CSTT-1 test target coming with the scanner can also be used. 3. Press the "Next Step" button. 4. After the White Balance function is finished the results will be displayed. 5. Click in section Menu Controls the button Back to Adjustment Menu to return to the adjustments menu (see Picture 78). Or 6. Click in section Menu Controls the button Back to Main Menu to return to the Poweruser menu (see Picture 77). 81 C.2 Error Codes The scanner does report error conditions on the built-in display and through the API. Some errors are only sent to the API. A green problem description signals that operation of the scanner is still possible although the error will have an influence on the behavior or quality of the scanner. If a problem description occurred the device will be stopped and further scanning is inhibited. Note: Problem description text with a red background indicates a critical error. Text with green background indicate warnings. White backgrounds indicate that the message is information only.
