Photoshop Elements 7.0 Photoshop Elements is a powerful software package that lets you create or edit pictures and images. Photoshop works on the principles of layers. Think about an image as a number of overhead transparencies laid one on top of another with each transparency containing a different piece of the image eg, text may be on one layer, a tree on another, a person on another. By manipulating these layers individually (size, colour, special effects, position etc) you can change the appearance of the finished sandwich. Quick tour of the workspace Some of the tools we will be using in this workshop Pointer/move tool Rectangular marquee tool Fill tool Magic eraser Magic wand tool Plain eraser Text tool Foreground/background colour Zoom
Adobe package for DET staff An Adobe package of software is now available for DET staff PCs. This package includes Photoshop Elements 7.0 and it s video editing companion Premiere Elements 7.0. If you do not have this software loaded on your work PC log a call with the Help Desk. DET staff can now purchase the Adobe products for use on their home computers under the work from home agreement. Follow the link below for details regarding purchase and licencing. terprise_agreement Looking for help with Photoshop? Check TAFEcat for published guides but be careful to select the correct version (Photoshop Elements 7.0). A simple Google search will also find lots of online tutorials ranging from those suitable for beginners to others covering more advanced tips and tricks. Adobe TV is also a good source for tutorials. You can also buy a number of Photoshop magazines from the newsagent if you get seriously hooked. Workshop Project - Poster Today s workshop aims to provide a hands-on introduction to Photoshop Elements 7.0 by completing a project step by step that uses a range of tools and skills. Creating a blank image file From the Options bar create a blank image file. File New Blank file Name: Poster Size: International paper - A4 Colour mode: RGB Colour Resolution: 300 pixels
From the Options bar rotate your image to landscape Image Rotate 90% Import your images into the Photo bin From the Options bar open the three image files we will use to create the poster. File Open Girl with credit card TAFEcard Library shelves Make working copies of the three images Always work with copies of any images. This way if you make a mistake you can always go back to the very beginning and start again. To make a copy of an image, double click on the image in the Photo bin to display it in the workspace. From the Options bar: Select All Edit Copy File Close File New Image from Clipboard. More insurance! Make a duplicate copy of each background layer by right clicking on the layer in the palette bin. Right click Duplicate layer OK Poster background image Library shelves Make sure your active tool is the Pointer/Move tool. Add the image of the library shelves to the blank poster image. Click on the library shelves image in the photo bin to display this image on the workspace. Holding the left button on your mouse down, drag it onto the blank image file in the photo bin. The poster image with the bookshelves image will now be displayed on the workspace. Bounding boxes should be displayed if not, click on the option Show bounding box at the top of the workspace. Left click the bookshelves image and drag the image to the top left corner of the page. Use the corner bounding box to stretch the image so it covers the page. Extend it past the edges of the page so that you mostly have shelves and books as the background. Click on the green tick when you are happy with the coverage. Create a new blank layer by clicking on the layer icon in the palette box and name it library shelves. Click back to working on the layer containing the book shelves.
Use the rectangular marquee tool on the toolbar to draw a box around the edge of the page. Edit Copy In the Palette box click on the new layer library Shelves. Edit Paste Right click and delete the layer that was stretched past the edges of the page. Add the image girl with credit card Make sure your active tool is the Pointer/Move tool. Click on the image of the girl in the photo bin to display it on the workspace. Left click, hold down and drag it onto the poster in the Photo bin. Is the girl missing from the poster image? Background layer Check your Palette. If the layer containing the girl is under the image of the bookcases, drag the layer of the girl to the position above the layer of the bookcases in the Palette. Resize the picture of the girl until she is ¾ the width of the poster. Turn off the bookshelf layer. Click on the background layer in the Palette bin. Recolour the background layer with a bright colour. This will not be a permanent change and you won t see this colour on your finished poster. Pick a colour that will contrast well with the image of the girl. Click on the paint box squares at the bottom of the tools bar. Select your preferred colour and click OK. Use the Fill tool from the tools bar to colour your background layer. Getting ready to add the TAFEcard image In the Palette bin click on the layer of the girl. Use the magic eraser to remove the background of this layer. Zoom in using the zoom tool so that you can remove the background from between her finger and mobile phone. To soften the edges Select the whole image (not the whole layer) of the girl by holding Control and clicking on the image thumbnail in the Palette. From the Options bar Select Feather Feather radius 2 pixels OK From the Options bar Select Inverse click delete.
From the Options bar Select Deselect Remove the credit card from the girl s hand Add the TAFEcard Add some text Enlarge the image using zoom so that the credit card fills the workspace. You should have the image of the girl displayed on your plain bright background layer. Use the magic wand tool set to 35 tolerance to select the credit card. Hold down the Shift key to select more areas until all of the credit card is selected. When you re happy that you have the entire card selected, hit the delete key on the keyboard. The credit card has disappeared. From the Options bar Select Deselect Select the plain eraser from the tools on the left and erase and edges of the credit card that are still showing. Select the plain eraser from the tools on the left and erase any edges of the credit card that are still showing. Turn off the background layer and turn on the bookshelves layer. Click on the image of the girl on the workspace to display the bounding boxes. If you hold the pointer over the corner a curved symbol with arrows on the end will display. Rotate the image of the girl until the straight edge at the bottom runs parallel to the bottom shelf on the shelves layer. Click on the TAFEcard in the photo bin to display it on the workspace. Left click and drag it onto the poster in the Photo bin. Drag the TAFEcard into the girl s hand. Is the TAFEcard infront of or behind the girl s finger? Change the layer order in the Palette so that the card is behind her finger. Hold down the shift key to resize the TAFEcard to the correct size. Rotate the TAFEcard until it is sitting in the same position as the credit card was. Use the magic eraser tool to remove the red border from the TAFEcard. When you re happy with the placement of the girl and the TAFEcard, turn off all the layers except for these two (TAFEcard and girl). Group these two layers together and make one new layer of the girl holding a TAFEcard From the Options bar use Layer Merge Visible
Add some effects Select the text tool, choose your font and font size, click on the poster image towards the bottom and type at the library. Repeat for the phrase Use it Repeat for the list Computers, Printing, Books, Magazines, DVDs, CDs Drag your text to where you want it to sit. Rotate the text at the library to follow the bottom edge of the image of the girl. Using the Palette Girl Effects Layer styles Drop Shadows High At the Library Effects Layer Styles Bevels Simple Sharp Inner Effects Layer Styles Drop Shadows Soft Edge Use it Save your poster Effects Layer Styles Bevels Simple Sharp Inner Effects Layer Styles Drop Shadows Soft Edge List of resources Effects Layer Styles Bevels Simple Sharp Outer You will need to save your poster in 2 formats: As a Photoshop file (with the extension.psd) and as a Jpeg (with the extension.jpeg). The.psd file will save your image as a working file. This means the next time you open this file it will open in Photoshop Elements and you will be able to adjust. Change layers etc. The.jpeg file is your finished flat image. The layers have been sandwiches together and you will no longer be able to make changes. This is the file that you will use for printing.
