Unsharp Mask This exercise shows how the Unsharp Mask in Adobe Photoshop Elements can sometimes repair blurred photographs in Post Production. Task Take a photograph of something close up but don t have the macro setting on your camera switched on. This will give you a blurred image as a result. See if you can sharpen the image using the Unsharp Mask. Nick Kind course@nickkind.com

Introduction When a photograph is blurred, due to camera shake, poor light or some kind of external movement, it is usually lost and the results are unrecoverable. However, the Sharpen tools in Post Production can sometimes help. In Adobe Photoshop the Sharpen Tool filter works with 4 different choices. Sharpen This is just a preset value of the filter that when selected will apply it to your image. The effects can sometimes be hard to notice, so you would use this again or choose the Sharpen More option to see more changes to the photograph. Sharpen Edges Again, a preset that is designed to find the steep changes in colour and sharpen those particular areas. This basically enhances edges and lines in your photographs and not the whole of the image. The results can sometimes be hard to notice so apply more of the Sharpen Edges tool to see a greater change in your image. Sharpen More Continuing from the first Sharpen option, this is simply a higher value preset of the filter to apply to your images. This can also be applied again and again to increase the amount of sharpening you need. Unsharp Mask This particular part of the Sharpen set has its own control window. It works by a mixture of finding the edges and lines with sharpening the whole image together. Levels and amounts of the filter can be applied and previewed so we can see changes as we are adjusting the sharpen settings. This is a similar method to how we would use the Blur Tool. Because of its control window and the ability to preview the effects you are adding, the Unsharp Mask is the easiest and most powerful sharpening tool to use. This close up photograph of a leaf is blurred because the macro setting was not switched on when it was taken. Lets put this image through the Unsharp Mask to try and make it look better.

Using the Unsharp Mask In Adobe Photoshop click Filter then Sharpen and select Unsharp Mask, the following window will appear. This is the control window. There are 3 sliders to use here. Amount - Increases the contrast of colour between the pixels in the image. Radius - The greater the radius value, the more obvious the sharpening. Threshold - Keep this at zero for now. If either the Amount or Radius are set to zero there will not be any changes made. So we need to concentrate on getting a good balance between the Amount and Radius together. This is basically changing the contrast and amount of contrast in the photograph which gives it the sharpening effect. You can also see part of the photograph is displayed in the preview window. Make sure the preview tick is selected otherwise you will not see real-time changes on the photograph.

If you set the Amount to zero and put the Radius to maximum you will see there are no changes made in the preview. Likewise for Radius set to zero and Amount set to maximum. Trail and error will get the settings correct. As you slide both controls to the right make sure you click and unclick the preview tab. This will toggle between the view of the photograph before and after the filter is applied, showing you how much the image is being sharpened and whether it looks real. Too much of the Amount and Radius will bring out too much contrast in the image and makes it look unnatural. The following picture had an Amount setting of 500 and a Radius setting of 25. Try putting the Amount to a value of 175 and the Radius to a value of 5. Using the Unsharp Mask These settings look correct and the photograph appears to be sharper with a natural look.

Before applying the Unsharp Mask. Using the Unsharp Mask After applying the Unsharp Mask. This completes the picture

Another Method On some photographs the blurring may not be consistent. Here is a picture of a caterpillar taken by one of the RAC students Dr. Ronald Ellis. We can see that although the majority of the image is blurred, there is much more blurring towards the head of the Caterpillar. This is probably due to the subject being a lot closer to the lens of the camera. So if we apply the procedure we have just learned with the Unsharp Mask it will still leave the head of the caterpillar blurred. After using an Amount value of 110 and a Radius of 4 we can see the majority of the image is sharpened, but the there is still blur on the head of the caterpillar.

Another Method So lets touch this up by using the Sharpen Tool from the tool bar in the main program. Sharpen Tool When you have selected the Sharpen Tool from the Tool Bar, choose a feathered brush size of 100 pixels. From the Menu Bar. Like the Burn Tool we used in Black & White Photography and the Clone Tool, this has no window. The settings for it are on the tool bar of The Main program (top left hand corner) shown below. Select a Feathered Brush as above and make sure it s around 100 pixels in size. Check to see that the strength level is also set to 50%. This means the effect will not be to harsh and you can apply more than once to fine tune.

Now with the Sharpen Brush ready, apply to the blurred area by clicking the mouse. This method is exactly the same as using the Dodge and Burn Tools, the Clone Tool and even the Rubber. Using the effect too much will give the following results. Another Method

Unrepairable Image! After just a few applications we can see that the image quality is degrading too much in this area. Sometimes when an image is blurred too much it simply cannot be saved. Blurring is one of the hardest problems to fix and its a good idea to prepare yourself in Pre Production to stop this happening. If you are taking close up shots make sure your camera is on the correct macro setting. Use a tripod to keep the camera still and make sure nothing else could interfere with movement. If the lighting is too dark then images can become blurred. Make sure you are focussing on the right place. In this photograph it looks like the camera might have been trying to focus in on the leaves rather than the caterpillar. Note how sharp the leaf is on the top right corner (and in the photograph before sharpening).

Try Again! However, if we persevere with this we might just be able to get some better results. If we take the photograph after the first Unsharp Mask has been applied. With the Marquee tool that we learned in Post Production 01 lets select the area around the caterpillars head. 10

Try Again! If we click the right mouse button in the flashing circle we have just made with the Marquee Tool and select Feather. Then put in a value of 25. This will smooth out the edge of the circle before we apply a filter to it. Now repeat the process for the Unsharp Mask again using an Amount value of 110 and a Radius of 4. What we have done here is just selected the area that is blurred and not the whole picture. This means that when we apply the Sharpen again it will only do it in the circle created by the Marquee Tool. Thus sharpening the head of the caterpillar more and not the rest of the photograph. The results are still not brilliant, but much better than using the Sharpen Tool from the Tool Bar. This completes the picture. 11
