1 Vancouver Response Center T Toll free T F Toll free F Customer support Document number: A-EN Release date: 26 May 2004 SWOP Off-Press Proof Application Data Sheet for Iris Realist, Iris RealistFX, Iris2PRINT, and Iris4PRINT Proofing Solutions. The SWOP Review Committee has approved the use of off-press proofs as input material to publications. SWOP specifications recommend that: The appearance of an off-press proof used in this application must closely simulate a SWOP Certified Press Proof. See other explanations and recommendations as outlined on pages 21 and 47 of the 2001 Ninth Edition of the SWOP Specifications for Web Offset Publications. I. Manufacturer Creo Inc Gilmore Way Burnaby, B.C. Canada V5G 4M1 II. Product Iris Realist, Iris RealistFX, Iris2PRINT, and Iris4PRINT proofers. II. Introduction At the heart of the Iris Realist, Iris RealistFX, Iris2PRINT and Iris4PRINT proofers is a unique printing technology called CIJ or Continuous Inkjet Technology, which forms images from precisely controlled, variable-sized droplets of ink. Printing at resolutions of either 300 or 600 dots per inch (dpi), Iris printers actually produce images with an apparent (perceived) resolution of dpi. To achieve a comparable resolution, a color printer that creates images from uniform-sized dots would need to deposit from of those dots per inch. To date, no other digital proofing technology can create dots small enough to match this quality or to produce images with a visual resolution comparable to what Iris proofers can achieve. IV. Control Guide SWOP Specifies that a process control guide such as the GATF Proofing Bar be supplied on every offpress proof in order to ascertain that the proof has been made consistent with the Application Data Sheet. Page 1 of 5
2 PLEASE NOTE: The use of this color bar on final SWOP proofs is the responsibility/opportunity of the user/creator of the proof. Creo recommends that all proofs are printed with an IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub check strip (or equivalent) with the profile applied. An equivalent check strip could be used, as long as it contains the patches identified in the CIEL*a*b* chart at the end of this document. In order to apply the profile to the check strip the check strip must be added to the job during page layout. The IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub check strip image is available on the web ( In the Brisque workflow you can apply the profile to the image caption/label Iris ColorZone control strip by checking the box in the proof options/labels that says proof color strip using ICC Profiles. However, if the Iris ColorZone control strip has been color corrected, it cannot be used for checking printer calibration. In order to verify printer calibration with ColorZone software a separate Iris ColorZone control strip will have to be printed without applying any ICC profile. See the user s manual for more details. V. System Components An Iris Realist, Iris RealistFX, Iris2PRINT,or Iris4PRINT proofer. Media: IrisPRO DCP Publication Ink: Iris Professional Graphic Arts Workflow software: In order to ensure color quality and consistency, Iris specifies that an IrisPRO SWOP proof must be run in a calibrated Digital Contract Proofing (DCP) workflow. This workflow is available with the following software configurations: 1. Iris ColorZone software v2.0 or higher, with Creo Brisque software v4.0 or greater 2. Iris ColorZone software v2.0 or higher, with Iris IQ Mac/Pro software v4.0 or greater. Must be installed on a Mac computer running ColorSync software v3.0.1 or higher. Iris Baseline: IrisPRO Linear Pub Note: Do NOT use the SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub baseline!! This baseline was for use in older application data sheets, which have now expired. Iris Device-Link Profile: IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub 2002 profile. Note that the device-link profile as well as the IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub Check Strip image can be downloaded from the Creo web site. ( - support & services - downloads - search for keyword SWOP and make sure you register) Spectrophotometers supported: X-Rite DTP41, GretagMacbeth Spectroscan/Spectrolino, GretagMacbeth SPM series spectrophotometer. Control strip: ColorZone 31step control strip (included with software) Page 2 of 5
3 VI. Procedure for Making a SWOP Proof on an Iris Proofer 1. Use an Iris Realist, Iris RealistFX, Iris2PRINT, and Iris4PRINT proofer with the media, ink, and software listed above. 2. Create a calibration for the IrisPro DCP Publication media using one of the 2 workflow software solutions listed above. 3. Print with one of the above workflow solutions using the IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub 2002 profile and Publication media, making sure to include a control strip that is not ICC-profile corrected, AND a color-corrected IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub Check Strip image. (see section below called Color Control Check Strip (or Bar). Add the profile name to the title bar. 4. Check the calibration using ColorZone to ensure the calibration is valid. VII. Finished Proof Characteristics When properly produced, the Iris proof should display the following items: Creo profile title: IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub 2002.dvl An IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub check strip (or equivalent) with the profile applied. A ColorZone control strip with no profile applied. When properly produced, the IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub check strip (or equivalent) with the profile applied, should have the following CIEL*a*b* characteristics when measured with a GretagMacbeth Spectroscan/Spectrolino to within 4 de*(ab) units. The proof must be backed with at least 1 sheet of IrisPro DCP Publication media. Color Value L* a* b* Paper Cyan Magenta Yellow Black Red Green Page 3 of 5
4 Blue CMY If you do not have one of the supported spectrophotometers, use the following method to check the proof. Measure the profile-corrected IrisPRO SWOP (CGATS TR001) Pub check strip (or equivalent) with an X-Rite 938 Spectrophotometer (proof must be backed with black backing) reading in Status T Density mode. A properly produced the check strip should have the following Status T Density characteristics: VIII. Sample Proofs Color Status T Density Dot Gain* Cyan / /- 2 Magenta / /- 2 Yellow / /- 2 Black / /- 2 * - 50%, absolute relative to paper. Creo has submitted two sample proofs that conform to this application data sheet specification. These have been submitted to the SWOP certification committee for their analysis and retention.
