RUCHITA SANTOSH DHUWALI DHU TH NOVEMBER 2012 Access to Fashion Media & Communication. Photography Essay: 1 William Klein William Klein was born in New York in 1928 and was known for his significance in the Arts and the humanities. He was a Jewish born in an Irish neighborhood and always felt like an outsider as he faced anti- Semitic comments. He was recognized for his style in photography and filmmaking. Klein had always fancied the idea of living in Paris, therefore after his release from the US army he decided to stay there and become a painter. While he was in Paris, he spent some of his time studying painting with Fernand Léger, who highly influenced him. Leger encouraged his students to explore the streets and source art from there, therefore Klein s work was known to be chaotic, lively and have aggressive energy in many ways. He then went to Milan and started working jointly with the architect Angelo Mangiarotti and collaborated with an Italian architecture magazine Domus. In the 1950s Klein s work was seen to be more abstract and architectural. Around 1954 Klein was re-invited to New York after having impressed Alexander Liberman, painter and director of 'Vogue' America. Klein worked in Vogue as a fashion photographer without having any previous experience. He was not that
interested in Fashion, but he liked taking pictures more on the streets and given locations than otherwise. He came up with latest methods of capturing images and was more on his way to improvising fashion photography by comprising the use of wide-angle and long-focus lenses, long exposures merged with flash and multiple exposures. He photographed New York in an unusual manner. He deliberately took a number of pictures that brought forward the strong energy and vulgarity that he found so prominent in New York. Vogue was shocked that he had such low opinions about the city and therefore he did not really find a publisher who wanted to help him. After returning to Paris he finally found a French publisher who believed in him and helped Klein in winning the Nadar prize. William Klein ( ) - Candy Store, Amsterdam Avenue, New York
Klein then moved from photography to Filmmaking in He produced documentaries like Who are You Polly Maggoo? Mr Freedom, Muhammad Ali The Greatest and The Little Richard. Klein then went back to still photography and painting in the 1980s- 90, his photographs during this period were known for his use of close-ups and wide-angle lenses. He won many prizes for his photography, painting and filmmaking and broadcasted simultaneously with shows in London, Paris and New York. Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? 1966 French film directed by William Klein
Essay: 2 Daidō Moriyama Daidō Moriyama is a Japanese photographer born in He is well known for his pictures that portray the breakdown of traditional ethics in Japan during the Post-War period. Moriyama learned photography at a studio in Osaka called Takeji Iwamiya after which he moved to Tokyo in 1961 and worked under Eikoh Hosoe, as an assistant. After about a year Moriyama assisted Eikoh Hosoe in the production of Hosoe`s series, Ordeal by Roses. Around the year 1964, Moriyama began his career as a freelance photographer. His photography was influenced by a number of people such as William Klein, Seiryū Inoue, Shōmei Tōmatsu, Andy Warhol, Eikoh Hosoe, and Japanese writer Yukio Mishima and Jack Kerouac's, On the Road. Moriyama was a part of a magazine named Provoke that published a few of the most innovative and modern photography, created in post-war Japan. He was actively a part of magazines like Asahi Camera, Camera Mainichi and Asahi Journal. Along with many of his photography works were some called Shashinyo, Sayonara, Hikari to Kage and Nakaji eno tabi. Moriyama s photography was usually recognized to be dark, and edgy yet very extra ordinary. Most of his photographs are taken on the streets of either Japan or abroad. His photographs are generally underexposed, blurred and unfocused or too grainy or taken from strange angles and are mostly seen in black and white. Moriyama is well known because of the way he captures his images and how exclusive they are, as well as the difference in his approach.
Amongst his best-known photographs is the one with the fishnet stockings. This was one of Moriyama s erotic photography s. The pictures were seemingly taken in 1986, the shoot was very natural and the girl posing for the pictures was apparently his girlfriend. Farwell Photography was Moriyama s first published photographic book. The pictures from this book were blurred, gray, grainy and scratched. Moriyama s work is displayed all around the world, in the form of solo exhibitions and group exhibitions, and his several books are said to be revolutions of photographic publishing. Moriyama s photography has made him win many awards like Photographer of the Year Award from the Photographic Society of Japan, Mainichi Art Award, Lifetime Achievement Award from The Photographic Society of Japan and many more.
