It can be extremely useful for Librarians and Archivists alike simply because it is a fantastic way to manipulate and even restore photos to enhance the appearance of any website as well as for any displays or print advertising that may be done. In this Tutorial I will point out some of the features that I found most fascinating for entertaining edits as well as useful tools such as merging photos together and finally the Spot Healing Tool as I work to restore parts of a family photo. For the purposes of this tutorial, all of my screenshots and experience will come from Photoshop CS5 that is available to staff and students on the Simmons Computers. To begin with, here are a few basic definitions to orient yourself when you re maneuvering the land of Photoshop that may help you better understand what is going on. Filters: Filters are essentially different effects that you can apply to your photo to change the look. It may do so by altering the colors of your photos, the way the pixels come together to create the image or simply by distorting the image. Some are simply fun to play with such as the, Neon Glow or Extrude Edges as are displayed in the following examples: While others usually serve a more functional purpose in the process of enhancing or restoring photos such as, Reduce Noise or Despeckle. The best way to get the desired look for your photo is to try-out different filters and play around with the settings to see what works best for whatever your project may be.

However if you are uncomfortable doing so on your own, there are dozens of free online tutorials with step-by-step instructions for dozens of different projects and Photoshop tools.

Once you have located the folder where your pictures are saved your window should look like this: In order to select all of the photos needed simply hold down the ctrl key while clicking on the images you want to join together. You will then click the button that I have encircled in read above, followed by Photoshop and Photomerge. A box will pop up that will look like this: There are 6 different choices for ways to merge your photos. If you don t want to figure it out then just leave the Auto option selected. However, if you re feeling brave and you want to try and figure it out on your own, feel free to try them all just to see what they do to your photos. If the end result does not look like you want it to, simply close out the photo by clicking on the x next to the photo name and try

Spot-Healing This is a tool that when used smartly and properly will help to restore old photographs by removing flaws, both those original to the photo and the results of the decay of time. The photo that I am going to be using is one of my uncle Luke when he was in elementary school. It has severe coloring issues as well as prominent cracks, scratches and folds. While I have not yet figured out how to create a better color, I will walk you through using the Spot-Healing tool to fix the cracks, scratches and folds as well as one discolored areas. The first thing that I am going to show you is how to make all of the creases and flaws disappear. Before we can make those flaws disappear we are going to have to get our tools set-up for the job and to do so we will need to highlight the photo first by using what Photoshop calls the, Highlight Marquee Tool. It is the dashed-square that I have circled in red for you in the snapshot I have included for you at right. Once you have selected this tool your cursor will now look like a cross of sorts. You will want to bring it to the edge of the photo and once positioned, click and drag your cursor until the entire photo is selected. You will then select the Spot Healing Tool from the same tool bar circled in blue in the same snapshot at right. Clicking on the tool will turn your cursor into a circle but before you start changing areas of your photo it is important that you take a look at the new tool bar above your photo: Following the colored shapes from left to right, the purple square is where you have the option of changing the size of the Spot Healing Brush. There are a couple of other features about the brush that you can change here however, we are not going to worry about them for our

purposes. Next-up is the rectangle where you can change, Mode. This helps tell Photoshop what feature of the photo it is focusing on changing such as, color to give you an example.

The options are, Proximity Match, Create Texture and Content-Aware.

as the yellowing area of the shirt, circled in Green below. The Create Texture can be used for areas that have flaws or items you want to remove where there is a texture you want to preserve.

4 purposes. Next-up is the rectangle where you can change, Mode. This helps tell Photoshop what feature of the photo it is focusing on changing such as, color to give you an example. Finally the orange rectangle contains the area where you make decisions about changing the, Type. In other-words, this is what tells Photoshop what kind of fix it is going to make. The options are, Proximity Match, Create Texture and Content-Aware. For my purposes I will be using Content-Aware for changes like background flaws and Proximity Match for discolored areas which will match the spot to the area surrounding it as best as it can, such as the yellowing area of the shirt, circled in Green below. The Create Texture can be used for areas that have flaws or items you want to remove where there is a texture you want to preserve. I discovered that the best way to figure out what was working and what was not was simply to try them out on the photograph. Remember, you can always use the Step Backward option under the Edit menu if it does not satisfy and when you get results you like, do not forget to save your changes. Using Spot-Heal Now that you know what the settings are and where to go to change them, it s time to see this tool in action. To use the Spot-Healing Tool you are going to bring your cursor over to an area of your photo you want to change and click and drag your cursor until you have selected the desired area. Here is what it will look like before you let go of the left mouse button: The combinations that I found the most useful for this photograph were the modes, Normal and Replace used in conjunction with different Types depending on what area of the photo I was working on. When I started working on the discolored area of the shirt I found that, Color and Proximity Match used together gave me the best results after several tries with other combinations. To the left are the before and after of shots of the portion of the photo with the discoloration of the shirt encircled. While it was not a perfect fix, the end result looks much better than what I started with.

5 Final Product: While I still have not figured out how to restore the color to what I would like it to be, it is much improved. I will be searching some tutorials myself to try and further discover ways to improve not only my skills for further editing projects but the quality of the photo to preserve it for years to come.
