6 Important Points to Check before Printing Three Important Points (Measures for UV Reflected Light and Ink Mist) On this machine, ink affixed on the surface of the print heads might be cured by the reflection of the UV-LED lamp light and by ink mist (ink splashing during printing). If ink affixed on the surface of the print heads is cured, dot drop-outs may occur. Continued use of the product in this state may cause a failure that requires the replacement of the print heads. While daily cleaning is important to prevent dot drop-outs, there are also three important points to check before printing. Be sure to check the three points given below. 1. You cannot use an object that easily reflects light as the object to be printed on (the media). Materials that are likely to reflect the UV-LED lamp light, such as mirrors and stainless steel, promote the curing of the surface of the print heads and therefore cannot be used as the object to be printed on (the media). 2. Make the distance between the surface of the object to be printed on (the media) and the print heads as short as possible. As the distance between the surface of the object to be printed on (the media) and the print heads increases, the likelihood of ink mist increases. When setting the height of the media manually, make the distance as short as possible. When the height is automatically set, the distance is about 1 mm (39.4 mil). "" "2. 7 Important Points to Check before Printing 3. A jig might be required depending on the size and shape of the object to be printed on (the media). Depending on the size and shape of the object to be printed on (the media), the distance between the object to be printed on (the media) and the print heads may increase, which will increase the likelihood of ink mist occurring. In the direction of print head movement, the object to be printed on (the media) or a jig must be present in the area 40 mm (1.6 in.) to both the right and left of the portion (width) of the data to be printed. In this situation, the difference in height between the surfaces of the object to be printed on (the media) and the jig must be less than 2 mm (78.7 mil). "" "2. 8 Saving Frequently Used Media Sizes (Preset Function) You can save media settings in presets. If you save the settings of frequently used media, you can load them instantly and shorten the time required for configuring settings. Saving the Current Media Setup with a Different Name The following settings configured in the media setup can be saved as a preset. You can save up to 40 different presets. Height position of the media Print area (including the print-start location) You can assign a name to each preset. Using media names for these presets may aid recognition. Procedure 1. Set up the media (height position, print area), and then check that [SETUP] is lit. 7. Press [ ] or [ ] to enter a character. SET NAME S 8. When you have selected the character you want to enter, press [ ]. The characters you can enter are "A" through "Z," "0" through "9," and the "-" character. You can enter up to 15 characters, including spaces. SET NAME SAMPLE 9. Press [ ] or [ ] to enter the next character. Enter the following characters in the same way. 10. When you have finished entering text, press [ENTER]. 11. Press [MENU], then [ ] to go back to the original screen. 2. Press [MENU]. 3. Press [ ], then [ ]. PRESET SAVE 4. Press [ ]. 5. 9 Saving Frequently Used Media Sizes (Preset Function) Load a Preset and Print Load the settings saved in a preset and perform printing. NOTE Be sure to hold the handle of the front cover and open and close it gently. Procedure 1. Press [MENU]. MENU PRESET 2. Press [ ] twice. LOAD DEFAULT 3. Press [ ] or [ ] to select the name of the preset (settings) you want to load. Select one of the 40 types of presets (when no names have been assigned, select from NAME1 to NAME40) or DEFAULT (DEFAULT is the factory defaults for each setting). 4. Press [ENTER]. The loaded preset settings are displayed. HEIGHT:000.0mm MEMO Every time you set up the media, you can set the print area (base position and range). Make Fine Adjustments of Preset Settings and Print You can change part of a preset and then perform printing. For instance, you can change the print area only without changing the media height setting. Procedure 1. Although the manual setting takes a little longer than the automatic setting because you need to visually set the height, it is suitable when you do not want the head gap sensor to come in contact with the media and when you want to set the distance between the heads and the media. * If the print surface is uneven, there is a limit to the area of unevenness. Move the head gap sensor as close as possible to the print surface. This step can be performed with the front cover open. NOTE Set the height of the table in a way that the highest position of the media (print surface) will not come into contact with the head gap sensor. 11 Performing Advanced Setup of the Media When the screen shown in the figure appears AUTO DETECTION Press [ENTER] on this screen to start the automatic detection of the height. During automatic detection, the head gap sensor comes into contact with the media. If you do not want to perform automatic detection, press [ ] to return to the original screen. 5. If the front cover is open, close it. 6. When the location is set, press [ENTER]. Height Settings When the Print Surface is Uneven This machine can also print on uneven surfaces. However, note the following points regarding the height setting. The gap between the "highest position of the media" and the "lowest position of the print surface" should be 2 mm (78.7 mil) or less (as a general guide). The print quality at the lower position degrades as the height gap widens. Highest position of the media Max. 2 mm (as a general guide) Lowest position of the print surface Media Printing on a surface that is perpendicular to the print heads is not possible. 12 Performing Advanced Setup of the Media Expanding the Distance between the Media and the Print Heads When you set the height of the media automatically (First Step Guide), the distance between the media and the print heads is set to 1.0 mm (39.4 mil) with which optimum printing is performed. However, if the height (thickness) of the media on which printing is performed varies or when the media is lifted or warped during printing, the media might come into contact with the print heads. You can expand the distance in advance considering the change of the height (thickness) of the media. NOTE If the distance is expanded too much, the print quality may be deteriorated and the nozzles of the print heads may be clogged. Configure the settings so that the distance between the highest position of the media and the lowest position of the print surface is 2 mm or less (P.9). This setting is enabled when the height of the media is set automatically. "" "2. Setting the Height of the Media Automatically" (First Step Guide) Procedure 1. Press [MENU]. 2. 13 Performing Advanced Setup of the Media Setting the Print Area for Each Setup of Media Usually, when you set up the media, the print area and the base position from the previous setup are set. You can change them every time you set up the media. Procedure 1. Press [MENU]. 2. Press [ ] to display the screen shown below. MENU 3. Press [ ] twice. SET AT SETUP ENABLE DISABLE 4. Press [ ] or [ ] to select a value. SET AT SETUP DISABLE (default setting) ENABLE Explanation Setup is performed using the print area of the previous setup. The factory default print area is the full area ( mm [20 13 in.]). This setting is suitable when you always perform printing on media of a fixed size. Set the print area (base position, width, and length of the print area) every time you set up the media. Select this value when the media shape changes for each printing operation. 5. 14 Performing Advanced Setup of the Media Changing the Print Area In the factory defaults, the base position (home position) of the print area is at the right front of the flat table and the print area is the full area ( mm [20 13 in.]). The base position of the print area should be changed according to the shape of the media. You can reduce the print time if you narrow (limit) the print area. Determining the Base Position of the Print Area (Home Position) Determine the home position used as the base to set the print area. 1. Press [MENU]. 2. Press [ ] to display the screen shown below. MENU 3. Press [ ]. 4. Press [ ] to display the screen shown below. SET BASE POS. 5. Press [ ]. SET BASE POS. LOWER R LOWER R 6. Press [ ] or [ ] to select the base position. SET BASE POS. LOWER R Print object Set the base position (home position) at the front right of the print area. This method is appropriate when the print site is level and you can clearly specify the print area. "Setting the Print Area Using the Lower Right of the Media as the Base Position" (P. 13) Set the base position at the center of the media. CENTER This method is appropriate when clear specification of the print area is difficult or when the print site is curved or uneven. "Setting the Print Area Using the Center of the Media as the Base Position" (P. 14) 7. Press [ENTER]. MEMO You can set the machine so that you will set the print area every time you set up the media. 15 Performing Advanced Setup of the Media Setting the Print Area Using the Lower Right of the Media as the Base Position This is the print area setting method when the print site is level and you can clearly specify the print area. MEMO Print area setup can be performed with the front cover open. However, if the front cover is left open for approximately 40 seconds, the print heads automatically return to the home position. The previous menu is displayed, so repeat the operations. NOTE Be sure to hold the handle of the front cover and open and close it gently. 1. "SET AT SETUP" (P. 11)Set to "ENABLE." 2. "SET BASE POS." (P. 12)Set to "LOWER R." 3. Set up the media. "" "STEP 2: Loading Media and Setting the Height" (First Step Guide) 4. Press [ ], [ ], [ ], or [ ] when the following screen appears. SCAN: 000.0mm FEED: 000.0mm The flat table moves to the rear, the print heads move to above the flat table, and the laser pointer turns on. 5. Press [ ], [ ], [ ], or [ ] to move the laser pointer until it points to a position to the right foreground of the print area. Right foreground of the print area 6. Press [ENTER]. The print heads return to the home position. WIDTH: 000.0mm LENGTH:000.0mm MEMO When the media comes into contact with the head gap sensor, the screen shown below appears and the setup is canceled. Perform operations again from "2. Setting the Height of the Media Automatically" (First Step Guide) or "Setting the Height of the Media Manually" (P. 8). CHECK TABLE HEIGHT 7. MEMO For a test print, set "WIDTH" to 80 mm (3.2 in.) or more and "LENGTH" to 70 mm (2.8 in.) or more. An error will occur and test prints cannot be performed if the area is smaller than this. Inner left of the print area 9. Press [ENTER]. 10. If the front cover is open, close it. The print area is specified. The print heads return to the home position. Make sure the "W" (width), "L" (length), and "H" (height) values on the menu screen are as intended. W:508mm L:330mm H:100.0mm MEMO If you want to use the print area specified here for the next printing operation, switch "SET AT SETUP" (P. 11) to "DISABLE." With this setting, you can set up the media without setting the print area and base position. Setting the Print Area Using the Center of the Media as the Base Position This is the print area setting method that is appropriate when printing on media for which it is difficult to clearly specify the print area or when the print site is curved or uneven. MEMO Print area setup can be performed with the front cover open. However, if the front cover is left open for approximately 40 seconds, the print heads automatically return to the home position. 18 Performing Advanced Setup of the Media Specifying the minimum print area enables print time reductions Set "FULL WIDTH S" to "PRTAREA" to narrow the width in which the print heads move, which reduces the print time. "" "Reducing Output Time" (P. 22) Example of good settings The blank area in the print area is minimized. Example of bad settings The print area has a lot of unnecessary blank areas. This function is effective when the print area or output data has a small width. Check the Print Area After you change the print area, you can check whether the print area has been set as intended. 1. Press [FUNCTION]. 2. Press [ ] to display the screen shown below. FUNCTION PRINT AREA 3. Press [ ]. PRINT AREA PREVIEW 4. Press [ENTER]. The laser pointer displays the print area that has been set. NOW PROCESSING When the laser pointer is difficult to see Depending on the material used on the media, such as transparent media and high-gloss media with dark color used on the print surface, the laser pointer may be difficult to see. In such cases, the laser pointer may become more visible by placing masking tape on the print surface or on the back. Print area 5. Press [FUNCTION]. 19 Maintaining Print Quality Preventing Soiling and Dot Drop-Out by Cleaning during Printing In the following cases, ink tends to collect on the surface of the heads. Under some conditions, this ink may be transferred to the media or cause dot drop-out. When you use media prone to static electricity buildup. When the ambient temperature is low. When the variation in the unevenness on the print surface is high (there is a limit to the unevenness of the print surface). "" "Height Settings When the Print Surface is Uneven" (P. 9) Use of the periodic cleaning function enables you to perform printing by removing the ink buildup before or during printing. Procedure 1. Press [MENU]. 2. Press [ ] to display the screen shown below. MENU 3. Press [ ]. 4. Press [ ] several times to display the screen shown below. PERIODIC CL. 5. Press [ ]. PERIODIC CL. NONE 10min 6. Press [ ] or [ ] to select a value. PERIODIC CL. Page 5 min to 990 min NONE (default setting) Explanation Automatic cleaning is performed every time before printing starts. Cleaning is performed during printing when the cumulative printing time reaches the value you set here. The color may become uneven because the printing is paused. Cleaning during printing is not performed. MEMO Using "PAGE" or a value from "5 min" to "990 min" results in longer printing times. 7. Press [ENTER]. 8. 20 Maintaining Print Quality Reducing Print Quality Degradation from Ink Mist (Ink Spatter) Under some conditions (such as low temperature or when a static charge is likely), a greater amount of ink mist (ink spatter during printing) may be produced and adversely affect the print quality. In these cases, you may be able to alleviate the symptom by lowering the rotation of the carriage fan. Procedure 1. Press [MENU]. 2. Press [ ] to display the screen shown below. MENU 3. Press [ ]. 4. Press [ ] several times to display the screen shown below. MIST CATCHER 5. Press [ ]. MIST CATCHER OFF LOW 6. Press [ ] or [ ] to select a value. MIST CATCHER HIGH (default setting) MIDDLE LOW OFF Explanation Rotates the carriage fan at high speed. Rotates the carriage fan at middle speed. Rotates the carriage fan at low speed. Stops the carriage fan. 7. Press [ENTER]. 8. Press [MENU], then [ ] to go back to the original screen. Description Whether the symptom can be alleviated depends on the temperature and media type. Be sure to check the print status as you adjust the setting. However, the purpose of the carriage fan is to prevent ink buildup on the print heads. Lowering its rotation will lead to more dot drop-outs. This means, if you specify "MIDDLE," "LOW," or "OFF," you should perform normal cleaning more frequently. The "PERIODIC CL." (P. 17) setting is also effective against dot drop-outs. 21 Maintaining Print Quality Re-Curing Ink When the ink is not completely cured after printing is complete, cure the ink by illuminating it once again with the UV-LED lamp. 30 About Maintenance Instructions for Maintenance Switch the power on once every two weeks Switch the sub power on once every two weeks. When you turn on the power, the machine performs operations to keep the print heads from drying out. Leaving the machine unused for a prolonged period may damage the print heads, so be sure to switch on the power to perform these automatic operations. Keep the machine at a constant temperature and relative humidity Even when the machine is not in use, keep it at a temperature of 5 to 40 C (41 to 104 F) and a relative humidity of 20 to 80%RH (with no condensation). Not doing so may cause the machine to break down. Automatic Maintenance Function and Notes This machine has a function that automatically performs maintenance periodically. This function performs operations for preventing the print heads from drying out, so: Always keep the main power switched on. Do not leave the front cover open for a long time. Return to the top menu after specifying settings in the menus. Alarm Function This function reminds you to switch on the sub power once a month. When the machine remains unused for about a month, this screen appears and a warning buzzer sounds. If this screen appears, switch on the sub power. When maintenance operations finish, switch off the sub power. This function operates when the printer's main power is turned on. Leave the main power switched on at all times even when the printer is to remain out of use for a prolonged period. 32 About Maintenance Disposing of Discharged Fluid WARNING CAUTION CAUTION Never place discharged fluid and ink near open flame. Doing so may cause a fire. Before you detach the drain bottle, be sure to wait for the screen to display [EMPTY DRAIN BOTTLE]. Failing to follow this procedure may cause discharged fluid to flow out of the tube and spill onto your hands or the floor and cause a stain. To store discharged fluid temporarily, place it in the included drain bottle or in a durable sealed container such as a metal can or polyethylene tank, and cap the container tightly. Any spillage or vapor leakage may cause a fire, odor, or physical distress. When "EMPTY DRAIN BOTTLE" Is Displayed The message shown in the figure appears when a certain amount of discharged fluid has collected in the bottle. EMPTY DRAIN BOTTLE Follow the procedure below to discard the discharged fluid. 1. Open the panel cover. Remove the screw on the top of the panel cover, and then pull out the panel cover in the direction indicated by the arrow. Do not store discharged fluid in a location where it is exposed to direct sunlight. When temporarily storing discharged fluid in the included drain bottle, do not store it in a location that is exposed to direct sunlight. The discharged fluid may harden, making the drain bottle unusable. Dispose of discharged fluid properly, in accordance with the laws in effect in your locale. Discharged fluid is flammable and contains toxic ingredients. Never attempt to incinerate discharged fluid or discard it with ordinary trash. Also, do not dispose of fluid in sewer systems, rivers, or streams. Doing so may have an adverse impact on the environment. 2. Remove the drain bottle and empty it to discard the discharged ink. 37 About Maintenance Manual Cleaning When manual cleaning becomes necessary When there is a lot of scattered ink mist and the inside of the machine is soiled Perform this cleaning every day when frequently printing with the print heads at a distance from the print surface or when ink is emitted to locations that protrude from the print surface. If the scattered ink mist is allowed to harden, it may cause malfunctions. Perform manual cleaning once a month or more To keep the stable printing condition at all times, perform manual cleaning once a month or more. Manual cleaning is recommended when the following symptoms occur. If symptoms such as those shown below persist even after you have performed cleaning such as normal cleaning, perform manual cleaning. Replacing the wipers is also an effective means of improving the symptoms. 38 About Maintenance Important notes on this procedure Cleaning requires the cleaning liquid and cleaning sticks included with the printer and commercially available glass cleaner, so have these items ready. Before performing this operation, remove any media. To prevent the heads from drying out, finish this procedure in 10 minutes or less. A warning beep sounds after 10 minutes. Never use any implements other than the included cleaning sticks. Cotton swabs or other lint-producing items may damage the heads. If you use up the cleaning sticks, purchase new ones from your authorized Roland DG Corp. dealer. Use one cleaning stick per cleaning session, and then discard the stick after use. Reusing cleaning sticks will reduce the printing quality. Do not put a cleaning stick that has been used for cleaning into the cleaning liquid. Doing so will deteriorate the cleaning liquid. Never rub the nozzle surface of the heads. Stroke the sponges very gently, applying as little pressure as possible. Never rub, scrape, or crush them. If a warning beep sounds during cleaning A warning beep sounds 10 minutes after operation begins. Stop work, close the front cover, and then press [ENTER] to end the manual cleaning mode. 42 Checking for Remaining Ink and Replacing Ink Cartridges How to Replace the Ink Cartridges When ink runs out, a warning beep sounds and printing pauses (unless the factory default settings have been changed). Pull out the empty cartridge and insert a new one. After replacing the ink cartridge, close the front cover. Printing resumes. NOTE Be sure to hold the handle of the front cover and open and close it gently. Procedure 1. Check the number flashing on the screen. 4. Pull out the empty ink cartridge and immediately insert the new one. Arrow Insert the cartridge so that the side with the arrow faces up. Insert and remove cartridges slowly, one at a time. 5. MEMO White ink tends to settle and may harden if left alone for a lengthy time. 52 When Moving the Unit Procedure from Preparing to Move to Reinstallation To move the machine, you must completely drain all ink inside the machine and secure the print heads in place with packing materials to protect them. Attempting to move the machine without first doing this may result in damage to internal components due to leaking ink or damage to the print heads. This operation requires six unused SOL INK cleaning cartridges (four for cleaning and two for refilling ink). Have these on hand before you start. Important notes on moving Be sure to use SOL INK cleaning cartridges. Using any other cleaning cartridges may result in breakdown. Once the preparations for moving are complete, move the machine and fill it with ink with as little delay as possible. Leaving the machine alone without ink may damage the print heads. 63 Read This Section Whenever You Face a Problem (FAQ) The Print Heads Do Not Move If the print-head carriage stops anywhere other than the home position (the right side of the main unit), take action immediately to prevent the heads from drying out. What to Do First Switch the sub power off, then back on again. If the print-head carriage moves to the home position (the right side of the main unit), the operation has ended successfully. If the Print Heads Still Do Not Move Try switching off the main power, then switching on the main power again, followed by the sub power. If the print heads still do not move, carry out the following emergency response measure, then contact your authorized Roland DG Corp. dealer or us. Procedure 1. Turn off the main power switch. 2. Open the front cover. 3. Gently move the print-head carriage to the home position by hand. Stop when you hear the print-head carriage click into place. 4. Close the front cover. If the machine is left with the error uncorrected, the print heads may dry out and become damaged. This error may be caused by the media being set incorrectly. Press any key other than the sub power switch to clear the error message. When performing these menu items sequentially, this error message may appear in order to prevent malfunctions due to the overheating of the pump motor.
