2 Surface Preparation & Cleaning The degraded, flaking Plastisol should be stripped to bare metal. All surfaces should be high-pressure detergent washed to remove all dirt, debris, oil, diesel and other contamination. Any white zinc salts should be removed by light abrasion or rubbing with 3M Scotchbrite abrasive pads. Exposed steel surfaces should have areas of corrosion thoroughly wire brushed or ground with an angle grinder to give a minimum ST3 standard in accordance with BS7079 Part C. The use of a proprietary Mordant Solution/T Wash is recommended on Zinc surfaces. When used as directed by the manufacturer s instructions, this will provide a useful indicator of surface cleanliness as well as etching the surface. When used correctly the surface should turn blue/black. If this doesn t occur then the surface should be cleaned again and the Mordant Solution reapplied. Edges, joints, boltheads, etc. should then receive a stripe coat of 3M Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135. This stripe coat should extend approximately 25mm either side of the repair. Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135 should not be applied when the relative humidity exceeds 90% or when the surface to be coated is less than 3 C above the dew point. For optimum results a minimum material and substrate temperature of 7 C is necessary. 2

3 Priming of Previously Stripe Coated Areas and Remaining Zinc Surfaces With 3M Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135 The previously applied stripe coat of Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135 should be allowed to become at least touch dry before applying the overall coat of Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135. Surfaces to be coated should be dry and free from contamination. Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135 is a two component high performance epoxy coating, supplied as a Part A (Base) component and a Part B (Activator) component. The Part A (Base) component should be thoroughly stirred until a uniform colour is produced. The Part B (Activator) should then be added to the Part A (Base) component and then again thoroughly stirred for at least two minutes, to produce a homogeneous mixture. NOTE: If only part quantities of the Part A (Base) and Part B (Activator) are to be used, care must be taken to maintain the volume mixing ratio of 3:1 respectively as well as total compliance with the above mixing procedures. Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135 should not be applied when the temperature of the substrate is less than 7 C and or when the surface to be coated is less than 3 C above the dew point. Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135 should be applied by brush, roller or spray at a wet film thickness of 100 microns, which equates to a dry film thickness of 50 microns on a smooth surface. The theoretical coverage at 50 microns is 10m²/litre. Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135 can be overcoated after a minimum of 16 hours at 20 C and provided surfaces are clean, the maximum overcoating time is three months. The following times are given as a guide for minimum overcoating at different temperatures. TEMPERATURE MINIMUM 10 C 32 hours 15 C 24 hours 20 C 16 hours 25 C 12 hours 30 C 8 hours 3

4 Application of 3M Scotchkote Urethane Coating PU 846 All prepared and patch coated/primed surfaces must be clean, dry and free from any contamination. Scotchkote Urethane Coating PU 846 is a single component finish and should only require stirring prior to use to incorporate any slight separation. Application of Scotchkote Urethane Coating PU 846 should not be carried out during rain, snow or when the surface is damp or covered with ice or when precipitation is likely to occur before the product has reached the touch dry stage. A stripe coat of Scotchkote Urethane Coating PU 846 should be first applied by brush to all joints and edges of sheets and allowed to become touch dry. This stripe coat should extend approximately 25mm either side of the repair. Scotchkote Urethane Coating PU 846 should now be applied by brush or roller at a wet film thickness of 125 microns, which equates to a dry film thickness of 75 microns on a smooth surface. The theoretical coverage at 75 microns is 8m²/litre. If the entire application is to be carried out by roller, a minimum of two coats of Scotchkote Urethane Coating PU 846 may be required to achieve the required film thickness. The applied system will be resistant to falling rain after approximately 4 hours. If rainfall is likely, the coated surface should be protected until it is touch dry. Scotchkote Urethane Coating PU 846 achieves full cure after 7 days at 20 C. Scotchkote Urethane Coating PU 846 can be overcoated after a minimum of 16 hours at 20 C. 5 Touch Up and Repair Procedures Damage Back To Bare Substrate The damaged area and the immediately surrounding area should be cleaned and degreased. Any loose, flaking coating should be removed back to a sound edge, the exposed bare substrate and the immediately surrounding area of sound and firmly adhering coating should be abraded with either 120 or 240 grade abrasive paper using mechanical or manual methods depending on the extent and degree of damage taking care not to excessively damage the existing galvanised coating. After the abrading operation, any residual debris and dust must then be removed using airline or vacuum brush. The abraded areas should then be further degreased. Prepared surfaces should now be coated with T Wash followed with the Scotchkote system in accordance with the recommendations. NOTE: For very small areas, 3M Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135 can be applied by brush but for larger areas or where optimum cosmetic appearance is required, spray application should be used. Damage Back To Scotchkote Epoxy Primer MC 135 The damaged area and the immediately surrounding area should be cleaned and degreased. Any loose, flaking coating should be removed back to a sound edge, the exposed primer should be lightly abraded and edges feathered in. After the abrading operation, any residual debris and dust must then be removed using airline or vacuum brush. The prepared areas should then be further degreased. Surfaces should now be coated with 3M Scotchkote Urethane Coating PU 846 in accordance with the recommendation. NOTE: For very small areas, Urethane Coating PU 846 can be applied by brush but for larger areas or where optimum cosmetic appearance is required, spray application should be used. 5
