Following a recipe / learning technique. Creating a silk screen effect. Blend modes, a brief introduction. Water color effect. Painterly effect. Lesson 6 Objectives Learn how to go beyond photography. Master a few blend modes and be introduced to some more. Follow a recipe to create new art. Learn where to go from here. 1
2 Photoshop Art Transformed Photography. Transformation. Faux media. Display modes. Using imaging at work or play. Learned Technique / Recipe Focus on technique. Real knowledge. Teach me to fish. Layer via Copy. Pick a color. Use Paint Bucket tool. Repeat. Posterize tool works poorly. 2
3 Select an Area Use the Polygon Lasso. Trace only major features. Don t worry about edge. Magic Wand small areas of well defined contrast. Use add/subtract to fix area. Layer Via Copy Copy via Layer and turn off Background. Pick a nice color blue for the sky. Eyedropper. Make up a color. Paint the Sky Blue Started with a real sky color. Made adjustments to please. Used the Paint Bucket tool. To save RAM, Flatten. Repeat process with another area. You don t need every area. 3
4 Finished Silk Screen Notice areas treated. Note areas not treated. 1 hour gets you most. It takes much longer for all. Uses: Large print on wall. Mugs. Note cards. Tee shirts. Working with Blend Modes Two layers. Combining attributes. Nomenclature: Base color, the original color. Blend color, applied color. Result color, color after the blend. Let s change white to green. Magic Wand the white. Layer via copy. Applying the Color Turn off background, apply the paint. Note the flat nature of the paint. Like silk screen. We are going to turn on the background. 4
5 Three Blend Modes Normal blend mode: Top layer obscures bottom. Hue blend mode: Hue of top, Lum. & Sat. bottom. Color blend mode: Hue & Sat. of top, Lum. Bottom. There are 23 other blend modes. We could spend hours. Normal Hue Color Watercolor Effect Candidates. Clear lines. Simple subjects. Bright colors. Edge seeking. New blend mode. Base for many effects. Monet s lily pond. Edge Seeking Copy layer. Smart Blur sets edge. Rad.: 0.8, Thrs.: 30, Quality: low, Mode: edge only 5
6 Invert to Black on White Invert is on Filter menu now. This creates line drawing. Useful in other effects. Soft Light Blend Mode If top < 50% gray, result is lightened. If top > 50% gray (only lines are), result darkened. Pixelate Crystallize Create watercolor brush effect. Set focus on background. Crystallize with a cell size of 10. 6
7 Gaussian Blur Smooth out watercolor brush. Gaussian Blur with a Radius: 6. Painterly Effect Load the picture. Resize 8 X 300 ppi. Duplicate 3 layers. Rename the layers. 7
8 Plastic Wrap Filter For edge definition. Concentrates highlights. Top 2 layers invisible. Parameters: Highlight Strength: 10. Detail: 6. Smoothness: 9. Colored paper cutouts. Like silk screen. Gives areas of color. 4 bit color (16 vs. 256). Parameters: Number of levels: 4. Edge simplicity: 4. Edge fidelity: 2. Beckham s choices. Cutout Filter Blend Mode Color Focus on layer 3. Blend mode Color. Corrects color loss. Texture from layer 2. Backgnd. visibility off. Merge Visible. 8
9 Alter Opacity Add back a bit. Opacity layer gets focus. 30% Opacity works. Merge Visible. Restore Some Detail Bushes in lighthouse. Erase on top layer. 10 px. soft brush. Enlarge. Toggle visibility. Cuts a hole. Flatten Image. Tune Up the Image Flatten image. Correct the levels. Unsharp (70%, 2.0, 0). Saturation +30. Resize 8.0 by
