Ink & Water 9 GCSE Photography Success Criteria Further development creating an image combining of ink plumes, using photo shop images clear and in focus showing ink and water plumes. Refinement using PS 1-2 images with clear focus Task A series of images that show ink and water plumes Quality photographs that need minimal adjustment in photoshop. Creative development using photoshop to create a combination of ink plumes. Extended development using other liquids
Kim Keever - Painting in Water
Alberto Seveso Ink and water Ink in oil
Ink and Water
Ink and Water Photoshoot 1 Using a continuous shutter mode. Shutter priority 1/2000 Action shots were good but very dark as the flash was deactivated
Ink and Water Photoshoot 2 Single shots with flash came out brighter, but I had to get timing of ink drop and pressing shutter.
Ink and Water Photoshoot 3 Single shots again with better timing. The first 3 used marco settings. Better view of ink cloud
My 2 best photos Cleaning up of background of each photo using curves and painting the background white. The whiter the background the better I have tried to keep the clouds edges natural. The orange ink has been flipped. I have added a darken layer mode to create merged clouds. Ebi The blue is too pixilated at the top
How to edit in Photo Shop
Select your image and crop Starting image Selected and cropped image
Select curves slide the white point to get as white as possible without loosing detail in the ink Slide the black point to add back detail
Use the magic wand-delete to get rid of the background. (Make sure your background is a layer first) Remember that you need to keep the ink as natural as possible. Use the eraser for small bits the wand misses. Finally, flatten the image. I have cropped and moved the top ink cloud down.
I have cleaned up my 3 images
Select all use move tool to drag 2 images onto the third
Change the opacity so you can see each layer Ctrl T to bring up transform tool You may want to make the layers smaller or larger Arrange until you are happy with the composition
Edit 1 lighten layer blend. I have also swapped the layers around
Edit 2 red and yellow layer only. Overlay layer blend curves adjustment
Edit 3 moving layers multiply layer blend
Edit 4 The image has been copied and flipped to produce a symmetrical image
Ink and Water Photoshoot 4 Shutter 1/2000 I had an assistant putting in the ink whilst I pressed the shutter. I changed the vessel to a wine glass. I liked the shape and thought it would add to the overall image. I also changed to a black background. The shots have worked well as the black seems to make a better contrast. I zoomed in a lot closer as well
Edit 5 I have used curves but this time increased the black. The shapes of the ink have become sharper. The glare of the flash on the glass needs to be removed
Ink and Water extended ideas Other photoshoot ideas Oil and water Milk/washing up liquid/ food colour Milk/ink and water Bubbles and food colour
Oil and Water
Oil and Water refraction images
Oil and Water GCSE Photography Success Criteria 9 Further development creating a symmetry reflection image images clear and in focus showing reflection in water/oil 1 image with clear focus Task A series of images that show oil and water refraction. Quality photographs that need minimal adjustment in photoshop. Refresher of using aperture and macro camera settings. Creative development using photoshop top create a symmetry image
The set up Things to consider Light sources With an artificial light source Natural light from window Camera settings Try using aperture priority mode first. Using a wide depth of field but you need to blur the background. You will need a fast shutter speed and a high ISO. Auto or manual focus Macro Use a variation of these settings and make a note of each one. Some cameras will do this when you are viewing the photo. Image source underneath Anything that is colourful will do Camera angles Aerial Side
Editing to enhance using curve The Photoshop Curves command is your most powerful tool for adjusting tones to brighten, darken, add contrast and shift colours. Curves is best applied as an Adjustment Layer. Go to the Layers Panel, click the Create Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom and choose Curves. Now your original image remains untouched. After you've spent a little time experimenting, Curves quickly becomes the go-to tool for many tonal tweaks. It's often the first edit you make on an image. Whether you want to lighten a dark scene, boost contrast and colour curves is a good place to start.
