The north coast town of Llandudno, Rhyl and Colwyn Bay developed after the railway arrived in the 1850s. Similarly Aberystwyth changed as soon as the railway arrived in 1864, three new large hotels and the pier were built and the promenade was doubled in width."

Many of the photographs are snap shots of people in action: most other photographs of the time were much more formal. They were taken with a good quarter-plate camera and the pictures are contact prints and every photograph is numbered and dated."
