1 How to Upcycle a Painting.. 2 The Robot Step 1 Transfering the image. Take the robot image, turn it over and shade the backside with a Black pastel or 6b pencil. Turn it back over and position the printout on the desired area on the painting and tape it down. Then take a biro and retrace the outline. Remove the printout and re - draw the linework with a Silver Metallic Marker. When the back of the sheet is being shaded the colour chosen will be dictated by the colour of the painting it is being transferred onto. For example if the painting is a light tone, a Black pastel is to be used and for a dark toned painting, a White pastel is best used. Copyright of Mont Marte International Pty Ltd ACN

3 Step 2 Painting. The only tones required for this step are Titanium White and Black. The general technique for this step is to choose the direction of the light source and paint the robot with this in mind. So if the light is coming from the left, then the left side will receive the light, and as such will show as white and the opposing side will get no light and be in shadow. Lay in both tones and then blend them together with a smooth transition. Keep a brush for White, a brush for Black and a brush for blending. This way you avoid cross contamination. Brake therobot up in to elements, and paint them one at a time. When working out the light source direction have a look at the painting you are upcycling and work out the original artists chosen light source direction. If this is not followed, any painting you do will not look correct. Also if your painting is old and dusty give it a gentle clean with methalated spirits. Use a soft rag. Step 3 Detailing. The main body should be complete, now for the detailing. Start with the fine Black work. Create a thin black from Ivory Black and Medium to the viscosity of cream. With the rigger brush add any panel lines, leads and rivets. To create the smoke, dip the small flat brush into the Black and wipe off any excess. Use the dry tip and with small circular movements scrub the paint onto the appropriate area. This is called scumbling and if you do it properly you can attain a very subtle effect. 4 The Dragon Step 1 Painting the princess and saddle. The image must be transferred onto the canvas first. The image is quite detailed and you may want to print the image out to A3 size.follow the transfer instructions from the robot lesson. Once the tracing has been done, redraw the line work with black biro. The first step is to paint the princess. Create a skin tone from White, Vermilion and a touch of Yellow. Paint in the skin area. Add the lips with scarlet and then paint the hair with a colour made from white with a touch of yellow. Paint the armour in White and then lay the shadow in by blending black with this. Ensure you use this tone sparingly, you want the shadow to be subtle. Create a brown from Scarlet, Green and a touch of Blue. Paint this over the entire saddle and the straps. Next add a little more Blue to the mix and paint in the shadow area. Add white to the area in highlight and blend it in so the transition is smooth. Step 2 Painting the Dragon. It is important to refer to the video for this step. The dragon is basically created in 3 tones of Red. These tones are to be laid in seperatly right up to one another. The first tone to lay down is straight Scarlet. This is the mid tone and covers the central area of the dragon. The next tone is the low key tone and lies in the shaddow area. This is created from scarlet and Viridian Green. The third tone is the lightest and lies in the area of highlight. Once all 3 tones are laid in take a clean brush and gently blend them so the transition is smooth. For the wing webbing lay straight Scarlet into the leading edge and blend it out into the back side edge. Ensure the coat is very thin and the underpainting a little visable through the paint. This will suggest they are thin. Step 3 Detailing the dragon. In this step we lay in the highlights on the top of the dragons head and along the top of the tail. Do this with the finest brush. While you have the White out, lay in the buckles. Next Create a mix of scarlet and a touch of Black and lay it onto any area of extreame shaddow.
