We welcome you to join the tour at whichever point in the season you choose a complimentary gallery talk will be held for each pre-sale exhibition. Please visit for the full calendar of events and accompanying video. America AUCTION: PRINTS & MULTIPLES, 17 MARCH 2015 ANDY WARHOL Car Crash, 1978 Unique screenprint, 1978 One of a limited number of impressions for personal use Estimate 130, ,000 Andy Warhol, enthralled by the great cultural icons of the American Dream Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley became an American icon himself through his defining works of Pop Art. His works from the 1960s and 70s, based on advertisements and mass-produced images and featuring everything from Campbell s soup cans to car crashes, transcend the world of fine art and are among the most recognisable of 20th century visual culture. Among the most powerful, challenging and provocative works made by any artist in the Post-War era, Andy Warhol s Car Crash from his seminal Death and Disaster series reveals the darker side of American culture. Adding to its rarity, there was no published edition of Car Crash and this personal work is one of a limited number Warhol gave to his friends, colleagues and clients.

South America AUCTION: EXPLORATION & DISCOVERY: THE LIBRARY OF FRANKLIN BROOKE-HITCHING, PART 3, K P, 19 MARCH 2015 LAWRENCE KEYMIS A relation of the Second Voyage to Guiana performed and written in the year London, FIRST EDITION, dark red morocco Estimate 15,000 20,000 Driven by dreams of the untold wealth of El Dorado and of creating an empire in the Americas, Sir Walter Raleigh embarked on his first expedition to South America in While Raleigh s exploits and failures are well known, it was the sea-captain who had accompanied him, Lawrence Keymis, who continued the explorations when Raleigh was unable to go himself the next year, initiating cultural exchange between Europe and South America and playing a key role in opening up trade roots and communication between Elizabethan England and South America. Lawrence Keymis began his career as a bailiff in the household of Sir Water Raleigh and rose to become one of the foremost English voyagers of the sixteenth-century. The rare red leather-bound book dating from 1596 and detailing the 4,600 mile voyage that Keymis undertook is one of the earliest English language accounts of Guyana. Spain AUCTION: IMPORTANT CERAMICS BY PABLO PICASSO, 18 MARCH 2015 PABLO PICASSO Corrida Verte, Terre de faïence platter, 1949 from the edition of 500, with the Madoura, Edition Picasso and Empreinte Originale de Picasso stamps Estimate 3,000 5,000 Throughout Picasso s long and stylistically varied career he continually evoked his Spanish heritage through the medium of art. A master of many artistic media, his ceramics in particular display the influence of his native land. A dominant motif is that of the bullfight, which was imbued with personal significance for Picasso since it symbolised his homeland to which he could not return after Franco came to power in Picasso constantly explored opportunities to break creative boundaries and at 64 years of age he discovered the freedom and expressive nature of ceramics. During the years following the Second World War, Picasso attended bullfights and enjoyed the company of the Spanish troupes of bullfighters who would take part in the corridas. The confrontation between the mounted picador and the bull, as depicted in this dish, became a favourite motif across all the media in which he worked.

Britain AUCTION: MADE IN BRITAIN, 25 MARCH 2015 Property from the Collection of Eugene and Penelope Rosenberg DAME LUCIE RIE An impressive fluted bowl, 1960s Estimate 12,000 18,000 Exemplifying the unique and forward-thinking spirit of Post-War British design, Lucie Rie s captivating work is credited for having elevated the position of ceramics to that of the fine arts. Her work has influenced countless artists, potters and designers including Edmund de Waal and fashion designer Issey Miyake and is collected across the globe, from London to New York to Tokyo. Lucy Rie s Fluted Bowl from the 1960s is a wonderfully impressive encapsulation of her oeuvre. The work is from the collection of Eugene and Penelope Rosenberg. A leading exponent of Modernist architecture, Eugene Rosenberg was one of the rare and pioneering architects to commission the very best contemporary artists of the period, with this piece demonstrating his inspiring eye for detail. France AUCTION: IMPRESSIONIST, MODERN & SURREALIST ART SALES, 3 FEBRUARY 2015 Property from The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund CLAUDE MONET Les Peupliers à Giverny, 1887 Estimate 9,000,000 12,000,000 It was the landscape of France, with its majestic avenues of poplar trees, canals and wheat fields, that was the preferred subject of the Impressionists and their followers, and Claude Monet was Impressionism s greatest genius. His mastery of the evanescent impressions of light and colour was a preoccupation that endured for not just years but decades, and his greatest examples are the most soughtafter of all the Impressionist artists. Monet s Les Peupliers à Giverny of to be sold by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, to benefit the Acquisitions Fund - represents a pivotal moment in the artist s career. It not only marks a high point, exemplifying the technical virtuosity the artist achieved by the end of the decade, but also looks forward to his great series of paintings of the 1890s, one of the most important of which featured these same poplar trees.

Italy AUCTION: CONTEMPORARY ART EVENING AUCTION, 10 FEBRUARY 2015 Property from an Important Swedish Private Collection LUCIO FONTANA Concetto Spaziale, Attese, 1965 Estimate 5,000,000 7,000,000 The most inflential Italian artist of the post-war era, Lucio Fontana became infamous for his works known as Concetto Spaziale, in which he exchanged the paintbrush for the razor-blade, violently slashing through the flat surface of the canvas in order to create a spatial dimension beyond the picture plane. Fontana s Tagli, or cuts, are now considered among the most radical gestures in the history of art. Concetto Spaziale, Attese, 1965 has come to define one of the most radical moments in art history, yet will only now be seen in the flesh for the first time when offered for sale. The precise moment at which Fontana pierced through the surface of the canvas was immortalised in a series of series of 20 photographs taken by the German photographer Harry Shunk at Fontana s Milanese studio in Despite its fame, the work captured in these famous photographs, Concetto Spaziale, Attese, 1965, containing 23 immaculate incisions on a white ground, has remained virtually unseen in public since. Austria AUCTION: OF ROYAL & NOBLE DESCENT, 24 FEBRUARY 2015 The Archduke Franz Ferdinand Hunting Sword by Stanislaus Striberny, circa 1890, Vienna Estimate 8,000 12,000 The Habsburg dynasty of Austria-Hungary was renowned for having been among the greatest patrons of art and culture in European history from the staunch support of Albrecht Dürer to patronage of Renaissance artists, in particular Titian. The last heir to the throne, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand shared with his predecessors a fascination for foreign cultures and travelled extensively in Asia and North America, which greatly influenced his royal commissions. Testament to Franz Ferdinand s journey around the world on which he travelled to Nepal is a hunting sword he gave in 1893 to Prem Shamsher Rana, nephew of the Maharaja of Lambjang and Kaski, prime minister of Nepal. Made in Vienna by Stanislaus Striberny, circa 1890, the sword is mentioned in the Archduke s detailed travel diaries. Upon his return, he exhibited the collection of 14,000 artefacts that he brought from around the world in his own museum.

Turkey AUCTION: THE ORIENTALIST SALE, 21 APRIL 2015 FAUSTO ZONARO The Celebration signed F. Zonaro lower right oil on canvas Estimate 350, ,000 Best known for his Realist style paintings of life and history of the Ottoman Empire, Fausto Zonaro s major contribution to the development of western-style art in Turkey is reflected in the prominence of his works on display in Istanbul s leading museums. Fausto Zonaro s Bairam (the Turkish for feast or celebration ) depicts traditionally attired men dancing accompanied by musicians including the artist himself wearing a fedora on the right. To this day his paintings grace the walls of the Dolmabahçe Palace and this painting s appearance at auction coincides with a major retrospective of Zonaro s work at the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence in April. Middle East AUCTION: ARTS OF THE ISLAMIC WORLD, 22 APRIL 2015 A large Qur an leaf in gold Kufic script on blue vellum, North Africa or Near East 9th 10th Century Estimate 300, ,000 The art of the word was particularly revered throughout the Islamic world, overseeing the transformation of sacred texts into majestic artworks, heralding the arrival of a new and powerful Islamic dynasty in medieval North Africa. Once belonging to the renowned manuscript known as the Blue Qur an, this vellum leaf, dyed a deep blue colour, was written exclusively using gold-leaf, and dates from the late ninth to early tenth century. In its complete form, this Qur an represented one of the most luxurious manuscripts ever produced in the early medieval Islamic world.

India AUCTION: FINE JEWELS, 18 MARCH 2015 HENRI PICQ gem set and diamond brooch, 1920s Estimate 3,000 5,000 India was an inspiration to the house of Cartier whose significance cannot be overstated. Both the choice of jewels that evoked Indian decorative art, and the local purchase of traditionally carved sapphires, rubies, and emeralds lead to the emergence in the 1920s of one of the major elements of the Art of Cartier a unique style shimmering with coloured stones, later named Tutti Frutti marked Cartier s first foray into Indian-inspired design when Pierre Cartier was commissioned by Queen Alexandra to create a necklace to accompany her collection of Indian gowns. It was 1911, however, when his brother, Jacques Cartier, embarked on his first voyage to the Subcontinent that the influence of this vibrant nation was to be seen in the Parisian jeweller s work. This would result in one of the crowning achievements of the French jewellery house in 1913: the Tutti Frutti design. This stunning gem set and diamond brooch was created in the 1920s and bears the hallmarks of Henri Picq, a workshop in Paris that crafted many Tutti Frutti pieces for Cartier. China AUCTION: FINE CHINESE CERAMICS AND WORKS OF ART, 13 MAY 2015 A Blue and White faceted handled vase Xuande Mark and Period Estimate 200, ,000 Daring, innovative and elegant, the technical prowess and creative ingenuity of early Ming dynasty craftsmanship exemplifies China s interaction with the West. The spirit of the age inspired countless generations of craftsmen and continues to be one of the most sought-after periods for collecting in China and throughout the world. Created for the revered Xuande emperor ( ), only the most skilled craftsmen were able to produce and fire a porcelain in the form of this Blue and White Faceted Handled Vase. The complex Persian metal-bodied inspired geometric shape of this displays the interaction and exchange of artistic inventiveness between China and its neighbouring countries to the West and represents the significant developments made in porcelain production during the early Ming period.
