1 ART CLASSES for Grades 3+up FIRST CALIFORNIANS Native American Clay Pots Students learn the process of working with clay to create their own pinch pot. Students will apply designs and symbols used by the Native Americans of the South West. The Native American pinch pot is created with air dry clay and will be almost dry the next day. It is created in a three step process lead by Kidseum Art Instructors. Teachers can extend the art making fun by painting the pots in their classroom with acrylic or tempera paint. If your class does this project, please make sure to bring boxes to transport the pots back to school. 2 MISSIONS AND RANCHOS California Ranchos Cattle Brands Students learn the history and reasons for the making of elaborated Spanish brand designs, used to identify a rancho s cattle. Students will create a unique cattle brand using their own initials on a paper hide. 1.5,2.0, ,2.0, ,2.0, ,3.0, ,2.0, ,2.0 Cochineal Painted Textile Students will discuss the history of cochineal and the science of making cochineal dye. They will then mix their own shades of cochineal dye using common household items such as lemon juice, to create different shades of red, and paint their textile with a pre-printed flower design inspired by artifacts in the Ranchos exhibition. 3 CALIFORNIA: THE GOLDEN YEARS Landscape Painting Students will view and discuss the different painting techniques used by California Plein air painters. They will apply these 19 th -20 th century painting techniques by creating their own landscape painting using watercolors. 1.3,1.2,1.4, ,1.3, ,2.0, ,2.0, ,2.0, ,2.0, ,2.0,2.3 ANCIENT ARTS OF CHINA: A 5000 YEAR LEGACY Chinese Scrolls Students learn the process, traditions and importance of calligraphy, brush painting, poetry, and signature stamps in Chinese art. 4 Chinese Clay Dragons Students create their very own sculpture of a Chinese Dragon as they learn the significance and importance of the dragon in Chinese art and literature as a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. Teachers can extend the art making fun by painting the masks in their classroom with acrylic or tempera paint. The Clay Spirit Masks are created with air dry clay and will be almost dry the next day. Teachers can extend the art making fun by painting the masks in their classroom with acrylic or tempera paint. 5 THE RED THAT COLORED THE WORLD Embossed Tooled Foil Students will explore a range of folk art to fine art. They will discuss the history of cochineal, economic impact and trade, and the science of making cochineal dye. Students will emboss the image of a cochineal or designs inspired by the exhibition either in gold or silver tooling foil and color with markers. 1.5,2.0,3.1, ,2.0,3.0, , ,3.2,4.0 Grade 5 Grade 9 1.1,1.3,2.0, , ,2.0 Cochineal Painted Textile Students will explore a range of folk art to fine art. 6 POPUL VUH: WATERCOLORS OF DIEGO RIVERA Watercolor Illustrations Students will create drawings inspired by the images of Popul Vuh, created by Diego Rivera. They will then learn and apply basic water color techniques such as wet-in-wet and dry brush painting and mixing colors to create their own Popul Vuh artwork. 1.2,1.5,2.0,2.4, ,2.3, ,2.0,3.1, ,2.0,3.0 Grade 5 Grade 9 2.0,3.0, ,2.0,3.0, ,2.0,3.0 Clay Jaguar Mask Students will find out that the Shamans shift-shape into very powerful jaguars or other animal spirits. They will learn some characteristics of the jaguar, speed, weight, pattern of rosettes. Students will make a clay jaguar mask and paint it in orange, yellow and black. 7 MUMMIES OF THE WORLD: THE EXHIBIT Egyptian Mummy Sarcophagus in Clay Students will create and design their own Egyptian Sarcophagus Lid while learning and using Egyptian design and hieroglyphics. Students will learn to use slabs, additive and subtractive clay techniques to complete their sarcophagus lid. Grade 3 Grade 8 1.5,2.0, ,2.4,2.6,3.0 Grade 4 Grade ,2.0,2.3, ,2.0,3.0 Grade 5 1.0,2.0, ,3.0,3.2 Grade 7 1.0,1.4,2.0,3.1,4.3 Egyptian Foil Art Students will explore a range of Egyptian mummies and artifacts such as, ankhs, canopic jars, mummy masks, cat mummies, sarcophagus and much more. They will discuss the making of the mummies, decomposition and rituals.
