It was there that the Turkish fleet was destroyed by European forces led by the Venetians, and Cervantes lost an eye. This collection of Twombly brings together all eleven works by the artist from the collection of legendary gallerist and collector Ileana Sonnabend, many which have never before been publicly exhibited. These eight pictures were painted by by Twombly in the summer of overlooking the town of Bolsena in Italy. Fundacio Caixa de Pensions and Bonn: Stadtisches Kunstmuseum, Barcelona, Quarto. Hardbound with illustrated boards. No dust jacket, as issued. Very fine condition. A comprehensive exhibition catalogue consisting of approximately 150 works, complete between 1959 and With its vitalism and refinement, its tension and evocation, its insolence and lyricism, the work of Cy Twombly -bridging the distance between two continents- attains a complexity which makes it difficult to classify. Includes texts in Spanish and English by Katharina Schmidt. Paintings XI Recent Works Stephen Mazoh Gallery, New York, First Edition. Quarto. Softbound. Slightly soft edges of cover corners, else a fine copy. An exhibition catalogue of a 1983 showing at Stephen Mazoh Gallery in New York City with an introduction by Marjorie Welish. In a complimentary pursuit, Twombly has created art in which mental activity ceded to manual dexterity, the skill involved with learning how to write. What is remarkable about Twombly is how well he has empowered the mark with a capacity to delineate as well as embody the flux of visual expression. Sperone-Westwater-Fischer, Number 476 in a first edition of Octavo. Softbound in fine condition. Very nicely designed catalog from Sperone Westwater Fischer, this book illustrates works that Twombly completed in the summer of 1981 at Bassano in Teverina, Italy. Printed by Litografia Bruni, Rome. An American in Italy and the odd man out in the trio of himself, Rauschenberg and Johns, Cy Twombly s work creates an important bridge between American and European contemporary art. Introduction by Roberta Smith. Houston Fine Art Press, Houston, Signed First Edition copy. Quarto. Hard cover with heavy white boards. Dustjacket, as issued. Very fine condition. Published on the occasion of the exhibition from The Menil Collection, Houston TX September 8, March 4, 1990, this book focuses on the seminal early 1950 s works by Twombly. Introduction by Katharina Schmidt.
12 Coronation of Sesostris Paintings / Works on Paper / Sculpture Gagosian Gallery, New York, First Edition. Oblong Quarto. Hardcover with stiff boards in pictorial wrappers. No dust jacket, as issued. Twombly has taken the Egyptian theme out of the vitrine and curiosa cabinet and set it into our most poignant private space The Coronation or Solar Voyage is a kind of march from the morning. It begins with a gigantic crayon sun as helplessly infantine as one could imagine, with an unimaginable audacity What a painter Twombly is, to make a circle weep, to make the hero of his very physical mental journey, an outline of an archaic glyph that means nothing to almost all. Frank O Hara summed up this collusion with the refraction: Maybe they re wounds but maybe they re rubies / each painful as the sun. John Cage always said that those who loved music preferred the softest sounds. That is a good practical reason to praise the soft refulgence of this luminist of our late empire. David Shapiro Whitechapel Art Gallery and Prestel Verlag, London, First edition, English. Large Quarto. Hardcover with dust jacket, 240 pages. Catalogue for the first large-scale Twombly retrospective held in , which traveled around Europe (Düsseldorf, Madrid, Zürich and London). Traces the development of Twombly s painting and work on paper. Also includes an extensive collection of his noless remarkable sculptures. Seminal texts by Roland Barthes (a reprint of a famous text written in 1978 for the Whitney exhibition in NYC), Harald Szeemann, Roberta Smith, Pierre Restany, among others. Katalog IV Galerie Karsten Greve, Köln, Number 997 in a first edition of Small Quarto. Simple hardcover binding with illustrated boards. Text in German. Published on the occasion of the Galerie Karsten Greve exhibition from January 27-March 25, 1984, this survey includes fifteen lushly reproduced images of some of the artist s most dense drawings on paper. All images in color. Includes an exhibition checklist.
