It includes 40 stunning base coat colors, plus a line of primers, sealers, clear coats, reducers, hardeners, and specialty additives to deliver professional results. Primers The Summit Racing 2-Stage Paint System also includes a variety of primers and sealers, including Etching Primer, 2K HS Primer Surfacer, and 2K Sealer. Base Coats Summit 2-Stage System Base Coat Paints mix in a 2:1 ratio with the Base Coat Reducer, plus one ounce of Medium Clear Coat Hardener. Flash time between coats is just minutes; the base coat is dry and ready for clear coat in less than one hour. Clear Coats Summit 2-Stage System Clear Coats are high-solid urethanes that provide excellent gloss, leveling, blending, and buffing characteristics. There are two formulations: Spot/Panel Clear Coat for quick-drying application on small areas and Overall Clear Coat for protecting an entire vehicle. Both mix in a convenient 4:1 ratio with Summit s 2-Stage System Clear Coat Hardeners. 2 Automotive Refinishing Basics 2-Stage Base Coat/Clear Coat Paint System Single-Stage Paint System Paint provides color coat has a flat finish, is not durable Clear coat must be used to provide gloss and protect paint from damage Paint provides color coat, gloss, and finish is durable Clear coat can be used over paint to increase gloss and durability Paint: The material that provides the color coat on a vehicle. Paint can be a solid color or contain special additives to produce pearl and metallic effects. In single-stage paint systems, the paint layer provides gloss (shine) and durability (protection from damage due to debris, weather, chemicals, etc.). Primer: The foundation for a paint job. Primer s principal function is to allow the paint to adhere to the vehicle body (OEM finish, bare steel, fiberglass, etc.). Primer also provides corrosion resistance, smoothes and fills surface imperfections, and adds flexibility to prevent paint cracking and spidering. Clear Coat: A protective layer that is applied over the paint. Clear coat provides depth and gloss to the paint, and protects it from damage due to stones and debris, weather, chemicals, etc. Hardener: A chemical catalyst that allows urethane paint, primer, and clear coat to dry, or cure. Hardener is available in several formulas to ensure proper curing and/or reduce curing time at specific temperature ranges. Reducer: Also known as thinner, reducer allows you to adjust the consistency of paint and clearcoat so it will flow through the spray gun and properly atomize for complete, even coverage on the vehicle. Like activator, reducer is available in different formulas for use at specific temperature ranges. Caution: Never mix Single Stage and 2-Stage Base Coat/Clear Coat products together! 5 Summit Racing 2-Stage Base Coat Components Surface Cleaner Your project needs to be as clean as possible to ensure optimum adhesion and a smooth finish. Summit Racing Surface Cleaner is a fast-evaporating, mild solvent that washes away wax, oil, grease, and silicone contaminants from OEM finishes, acrylic lacquers, fresh or uncured enamels, and all sanded surfaces.
