b. Before each area of color dries, choose another color and paint a smaller spot inside of your first circle. To blend the two colors together, add a small drop of water and gently blend with your brush. (Remember to clean your brush between each color change.) c. Repeat five times (to total 6 different colors) across your paper, staggering the height of your painted circles as you go. d. Paint triangle wings on some of the circles, as shown in the picture above. e. Let the paint dry completely. It takes 5 10 minutes to dry. b. Beaks and eyes Draw a small beak and eyes for each of your chicks. If your chick has two wings on the sides of the circle, the face goes in front. If your chick has one wing in the center of the chick, the face goes on the side. c. Outline border Use the black marker to outline your colored circles. Don t press too hard. Remember to outline the wings on the chicks that have them. f. While the circles are drying, paint long, thin yellow lines across the bottom of the page in a criss-crossed fashion to resemble hay. Let it dry. STEP 3: Draw with the black marker. a. Tails and Legs When everything is completely dry, use your marker or your thin paintbrush to draw tails on the opposite side from where you will draw a beak. To make a tail, draw or paint two small lines with swirls at the ends. Finally, draw two legs under each chick. All the legs should reach the ground at the same place. Add two or three claws to each foot. 21

Yarn Pumpkins Items Needed: Orange, yellow, or white yarn Balloons (any size) Green and brown pipe cleaners Scissors Small bowls White glue (use Elmer s Glue-All for stiffer pumpkins) Note: This is a messy project. You might want to put down newspaper or scrap paper. Also, it may be difficult for children to wrap the yarn around the balloon by themselves. Parental help may be needed. Steps: STEP 1: Pour the glue. Pour the glue into small bowls. STEP 2: Blow up the balloons. Blow the balloons to the size you d like your pumpkins to be. STEP 3: Cut the yarn. Make strings that are at least 20 long. Use about 20 strings for a smaller pumpkin. You can use more strings if you want your pumpkin to be fuller. 23

Nature Crowns Items Needed: Duct tape A flexible measuring tape Ribbons and/or twine An assortment of sticks, twigs, flower stems, and other items that you ve collected from outside 29 Glue (Fabri-Tac ) or double-sided tape

Kaleidoscope Rocks Items Needed: White craft paint A paintbrush Smooth rocks Scrap paper A variety of nail polish colors Skewers or toothpicks A deep glass bowl with cold water Latex gloves Nail polish remover 32

Colorful Grid Landscape Inspired by Ton Schulten Items Needed: A pencil and an eraser A piece of white watercolor paper Watercolor paint (set of 16 colors) Black craft paint A cup of water Two paintbrushes: 1 medium flat brush, 1 small pointed round or detail round brush Paper towels A paper plate or palette 34

Learning about Ton Schulten: Ton Schulten is an artist who lives in the Netherlands. He mainly paints landscapes of buildings using bright blocks of color and flat shapes. For this project, you will create a Ton Schulten style painting. Steps: STEP 1: Draw the grid. Using your pencil, lightly draw three horizontal lines and three vertical lines on your 9 x12 watercolor paper, as shown in the picture to the right. The lines don t have to be perfectly straight. In fact, if they are a little bit wavy, or slightly diagonal, it will make your picture more interesting. 35

STEP 4: Paint three tree shapes. Notice the trees are very simplified shapes. The trees almost look like lollipops. a. In the first column, paint a circle in the 2nd box up. b. Paint the thin outline of the tree trunk under the circle. c. In the fourth column, paint two more lollipop trees. STEP 5: Paint the details. Paint the details of the windows and doors. Copy the example on the right, or paint the windows and doors in your own creative way. 37

Simple Chick Watercolor Items Needed: Watercolor paint (set of 16 colors) A pencil A piece of white watercolor paper A pointed paintbrush A small round paintbrush A cup of water Paper towels Steps: STEP 1: Draw a circle in pencil. Lightly draw a circle in the middle of your page. Use the lightest pencil you can. You do not want to be able to see your lines when your painting is finished. Also, pencil is difficult to erase once it has paint on it. STEP 2: Paint the circle (the chick s body). a. Use your paintbrush with just enough water to wet your paper just inside of your circle. Then load your brush with yellow. Paint your circle from the outside toward the center. Try to leave the center brighter than the outer edge. 38

Galaxy Watercolor Items Needed: Watercolor paint (set of 16 colors) White acrylic paint A piece of white watercolor paper A cup of water A pointed paintbrush Paper towels A large flat paintbrush 40

Beaded Corn on the Cob Items Needed: 4 tan pipe cleaners (12 long) A large handful of red, orange, yellow, white, and brown pony beads Steps: STEP 1: Make two X s. Wrap one pipe cleaner around another to make an X shape. Do it again to create a total of two X shapes. STEP 2: Make a star. Combine the two X s to make a star shape. Do this by wrapping some of the pipe cleaners tightly around the others to secure them together. 43

STEP 2: Bend the sticks. Take one stick from the water and carefully start to curve it into a circular shape. Move slowly, and if your stick doesn t seem to be curving well, try a different one. Some sticks work better than others. STEP 3: Shape the sticks. When your stick is curving well, press it into the inside edge of a jar lid to help hold the shape. If you have the jars, you can press them into the center of the curved sticks to help them hold a nice round shape. Let them dry like this for an hour. STEP 4: Tighten the band. Take the sticks out of their molds and put a hair elastic or a rubber band around them. The tighter the band, the better the bracelet will stay on your wrist. Allow them to dry like this overnight. STEP 5: Decorate the band. When you can take the bands off without the bracelet losing its shape, you are ready to decorate. Choose the method you prefer from the list above, or come up with your own ideas! 46

Lined Landscaping Items Needed: Colorful fine-tipped markers Steps: STEP 1: Draw simple lines. a. Use a dark green marker to draw a line with a gentle wave. Move from left to right on your page, dividing the page horizontally. b. Use a lighter green marker to draw two hills below that line, like the picture to the right. c. With a dark purple marker, draw two or three mountain peak shapes above the middle line, starting with the outside mountains. d. Draw a yellow sun and a blue cloud in the sky wherever you would like. 47 A piece of white card stock or paper

STEP 4: Add the trees. Glue the white strips of paper onto the blue paper, partially covering the moon. These are your tree trunks. STEP 5: Paint the branches. Use black paint and a paintbrush to add small branches and texture to the trees. Look at the photographs of the aspen trees and beech trees on this page to give you ideas. STEP 6: Add the snow. Using a cotton swab and white paint, create snow falling in the sky. 51

Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Items Needed: 1 cup Plaster of Paris ¾ cup water A few colors of paint (tempera, poster paint, or food coloring) Bowls or cups and spoons for mixing (disposable is best) Card stock or chipboard Scissors Duct tape or packing tape Wax paper or parchment paper Parents and Helpers: It is best to use disposable items when using Plaster of Paris. It is extremely fine and light and is easily dispersed through the air. Avoid getting it in your eyes and nose. Do not mix it with your bare hands. Do not rinse items in your sink, as the plaster can clog your drain. Children will need adult supervision. 52

Thumbprint Art Items Needed: Paper (any type) Yellow, dark green, and light green paint (washable is preferable) A paper plate or palette Steps: STEP 1: Add paint to plate. Squeeze several drops of each color of paint on a paper plate or palette. STEP 2: Dip your thumb in the paint. You can swirl the colors together before you dip your thumb, depending on the look you are trying to create. If there is too much paint, dab some off. 55

Peacock Prints Items Needed: Acrylic paints in teals, blues, and greens, as well as white and black or brown A paper plate White card stock A large paintbrush (use one and wash out for each new color, or use 4 different brushes) A narrow/thin paintbrush 60

Steps: STEP 1: Prepare. Squirt a little of each of your paint colors onto your plate. STEP 2: Paint your hand. Have your parent paint stripes of each color on your hand as shown on the picture to the left. Do not be stingy with the paint! You ll want a lot on there. STEP 3: Place your hand on the paper. Keep your fingers about 1 apart not too wide and not too close together. Place your fingers on the paper and smear the paint back and forth slightly on the paper. Then press down your palm as well. STEP 4: Repeat. Repeat Steps 2 3 until you have a full plume of feathers on the paper, as shown below. 61

STEP 2: Press. Lay the clay over the nature items and press down firmly. Carefully lift the clay off the counter and turn it over. Your nature items will be pressed into the clay. STEP 3: Peel. Gently peel the nature items from the clay. STEP 4: Cut. Place the circle cookie cutter around the design, press it down, and then remove the excess clay. 64

Japanese Cherry Tree Items Needed: Two brown paper lunch bags Pink tissue paper, cut into small squares Glue An old pencil Scissors A small bowl 68

73 STEP 4: Add the seeds. Lightly dip a cotton swab into some white paint and start placing dots around the brown center at the top of each stem. The dots should also be placed over the top of the brown center. Try to keep the white dots in a circle around the brown center, otherwise it might look like all the seeds are blowing away!

Paper Flowers Items Needed: A variety of colored construction paper Green construction paper Scissors Glue A pen 74

Hot Air Balloons Items Needed: Watercolor brush Blue and brown watercolors White card stock or watercolor paper A black or brown marker A variety of colored construction paper A glue stick A pencil Scissors Steps: STEP 1: Draw. With a pencil lightly draw a simple cloud or two on the card stock or watercolor paper. 78

Cork Sailboats Items Needed: 3 4 straight corks 2 wide rubber bands A 4 6 skewer A hole punch Craft foam sheet A small piece of colored or decorative tape A nail or screw Scissors 81

STEP 6: Make a hole in the raft. Using the screw or nail, make a hole in the center of the raft about the size of your skewer/sail, halfway through the corks STEP 7: Insert the sail into the raft. STEP 8: Test it out! Fill up a sink or a bathtub and enjoy watching your sailboat float! 83
