Property of a Gentleman WP1201 Property of a Gentleman is an oil painting based on a beautifully crafted artisanal series of 19th century panels formerly owned by designer Hubert de Givenchy. The design is created by alternating several layers of gesso and oil based paint; between each layer hand antiquing is created by sanding. Once an acceptable degree of antiquing has been achieved, an oil based glaze is applied to seal the design and lastly, the panels are chalked to give them a matte finish. A specific color palette is created, and is used across the full set of six panels. All colors are mixed by hand, therefore a degree of variation in shade in both the design and background is to be expected from one order to the next. Color placement in each design element (flowers, birds, foliage, butterflies etc.) may vary and may not be an exact match to the existing sampling. This is deliberately done to enhance the unique design aesthetic from one order to the next. Due to the handmade nature of Property of a Gentleman, production is extremely labor-intensive and it should be noted that different artists will have slightly different handwriting, sanding will also vary from heavy to light in different areas making each order unique. NOTE: Due to the density of the design, pattern matching at the seams may not be exact. Number of Panels in Layout: 6 schematic, non-repeating total width is 18'. Color change. If exact color placement is requested, it must be indicated on the order and a specific panel must be referenced. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care making sure not to scratch the surface. A light protective sealant is applied as a standard. Small stains can be removed using a clean and slightly damp cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners.
Beauport WP1202 Beauport is a watercolor painting that was originally created in Canton during the 19th Century for the American market. This design is hand painted onto a handmade tea paper ground (see Tea Paper sales reference sheet), which is laid over silk cloth and backed with paper. Several layers of watercolor washes are applied, and each layer is randomly sanded to antique it. A specific color palette was created for Beauport, and is used across the full set of six panels. All colors are mixed by hand, therefore a degree of variation in shade is to be expected from one order to the next. Color placement in each design element (flowers, birds, foliage, butterflies etc.) may vary and may not be an exact match to the existing sampling. This is deliberately done to enhance the unique design aesthetic from one order to the next. The design is overantiqued with a watercolor wash and additional sanding, which may cause colors in the design to move. To create the effect of the original old papers, sheets of teapaper are overlapped and joined every 36" creating visible horizontal seams which add to the overall beauty of the panels. Number of Panels in Layout: 6 schematic, non-repeating total width is 18'. Panel dimensions outside of the standard 36" width for a maximum 39 width and 5' to 12' height. Color change of design elements. If exact color placement is requested, it must be indicated on the order form, a specific panel must be referenced and a color swatch provided. Background color change. This is possible however sampling is required because the background color will affect the design colors due to their translucency. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care making sure not to scratch the surface. Small stains can be removed using a clean dry cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners. Advice on how to remove specific stains or marks will be given once images of the specific affected area are provided.
West Fifty-Third WP1203 West Fifty-Third adorned the walls of Rose Cumming s iconic townhouse on West 53rd Street in New York. The ground is created by applying gesso to a paper base with real silver leaf gilded over the surface. A special technique is used to oxidize the silver leaf and this creates the tarnished effect. This process is followed by an opaque wash and finished with an acrylic glaze sealant. The design is a watercolor painting that is hand painted over the ground. A specific color palette was created for West Fifty-Third and is used across the full set of seven panels. All colors are mixed by hand, therefore a degree of variation in shade is to be expected from one order to the next. Color placement in each design element (flowers, birds, foliage, butterflies, etc.) may vary and may not be an exact match to the existing sampling. The design is over-antiqued with a watercolor wash, which is deliberately done to enhance the unique design aesthetic. A random cracked patina is to be expected over time which adds to the beauty and character of the painting. Number of Panels in Layout: 7 schematic, non-repeating total width is 21'.
Music Room WP1204 Music Room is the reproduction of a 19th Century design installed in the music room of Rose Cumming s New York town house. This design is a hand painted watercolor painting on a handmade tea paper ground (see Tea Paper sales reference sheet), which is laid over silk cloth and backed with paper. A specific color palette was created for Music Room, and is used across the full set of seven panels. A special spotting effect and antique wash are randomly added to the background, the design is lightly sanded. These steps may cause variations and colors in the design to move slightly. To create the effect of the original old papers, sheets of teapaper are overlapped and joined every 36 creating visible horizontal seams which add to the overall beauty of the panels. Number of Panels in Layout: 7 schematic, non-repeating total width is 21'. Panel dimensions outside of the standard 36" width for a maximum 39 width and 5' to 12' height. Color change. If exact color placement is requested, it must be indicated on the order and a specific panel must be referenced. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care making sure not to scratch the surface. Small stains can be removed using a clean dry cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners. Advice on how to remove stains or marks will be given once images of the specific affected area are provided.
Palace Garden WP1205 Palace Garden is based on the antique paper Michael Taylor selected for his client, Dodie Rosekrans for her opulent San Francisco Mansion. This design is a hand painted watercolor painting on a handmade tea paper ground (see Tea Paper sales reference sheet), which is laid over silk cloth and backed with paper. The outline in this design is a pen and ink drawing and the watercolor is hand painted on. A specific color palette was created for Palace Garden, and is used across the full set of four panels. The design is over-antiqued with a watercolor wash and light sanding, which may cause colors in the design to move. To create the effect of the original old papers, sheets of teapaper are overlapped and joined every 36 creating visible horizontal seams which add to the overall beauty of the panels. Number of Panels in Layout: 4 schematic, non-repeating total width is 12'. Advice on how to remove specific stains or marks will be given once images of the specific affected area are provided.
Abundance WP1206 Abundance is an oil painting which was inspired by the breakfast room walls of Templeton Crocker s San Francisco penthouse. Jean Michel Frank designed the room and commissioned the original Jean Dunand panels. Torn uneven pieces of silver leaf are hand gilded onto a paper ground creating a surface that is textured and has depth, the joints of the silver leaf will be visible. Antiqued oil is used to create a gradient effect, starting at the bottom and moving up, dark to light. This oil-based process is used to achieve the look and feel of the original document resulting in apparent variation in the level of antiquing throughout each panel. A specific color palette was created for Abundance and is used across the full set of seven panels. All colors are mixed by hand, therefore a degree of variation in shade is to be expected from one order to the next. Color placement in each design element (fish, coral, seaweed) may vary and may not be an exact match to the existing sampling. The panels are over-glazed with an oil based sealant for protection. A random cracked patina is to be expected over time which adds to the beauty and character of the painting. Panel width: 36" + 1/2" trim/bleed Panel heights: 5' to 12' + 2" bottom and 4" top trim Number of Panels in Layout: 7 schematic, non-repeating total width is 21'. Color change. If exact color placement is requested, it must be indicated on the order and a specific panel must be referenced. Light or no antiquing may be requested, this option would reflect the upper portion of a standard panel. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care making sure not to scratch the surface. A light protective sealant is applied as a standard. Small stains can be removed using a clean and slightly damp cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners.
Arabesque WP1207 Arabesque is taken from the hand painted design on a 17th Century Chinese lacquer and gold box. Gold Leaf is hand gilded onto a paper ground and then creased for texture. The pattern is silk screen printed over the gold leaf. Artisans antique the paper by rubbing away the color, sanding and repainting (purple, black and brown oil). Brush marks can be expected throughout the panel. A layer of oil based lacquer is applied over the design. Variations should be expected from one order to the next and may not be an exact match to the existing sampling. Number of Panels in Layout: 4 schematic, non-repeating total width is 12'. Changing gold leaf to silver leaf. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care making sure not to scratch the surface. A light protective sealant is applied as a standard. Small stains can be removed using a clean and slightly damp cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners.
Lady Murasaki WP1208 Named for the 9th Century writer whose poetic novels often featured detailed woodblock illustration, Lady Murasaki is a design taken from a 19th Century Japanese box which was hand-blocked in gold on black lacquer ground with hand painted color details. Gold leaf is hand gilded on a paper ground. The black lattice pattern is screen printed on the gold leafed ground. Brush strokes are used to create a texture on the lattice work. Flowers are hand painted on with oil paints from a specific color palette. All colors are hand mixed, therefore a degree of variation should be expected from one order to another. Color placement of each specific colored flower may vary and may not be an exact match to existing sampling. An antique oil is applied over the design. Changing gold leaf to silver leaf. Color change of flowers. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care. A light protective sealant is applied as a standard. Small stains can be removed using a clean and slightly damp cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners.
Eltham Palace WP1209 Eltham Palace is a romantic design beautifully hand painted on linen. The a la Turque motif draws from exotic Ottoman designs that were fashionable in France and England in the early 19th century. The design is an oil painting, the background is created by alternating several layers of gesso and oil based paint; between each layer hand antiquing is created by sanding. Once an acceptable degree of antiquing has been achieved, an oil based sealant is applied to the design and lastly, the panels are chalked to give them a matte finish. A specific color palette was created for Eltham Palace, all colors are mixed by hand, therefore a degree of variation in shade should be expected and may not match existing sampling. This is deliberately done to enhance the unique design aesthetic from one order to the next. Due to the handmade nature of Eltham Palace, production is extremely labor-intensive and it should be noted different artists will have slightly different handwriting, making each order unique. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care. Overhandling may cause the gesso background to crease and crack, this can be touched up by a decorative artist. A light protective sealant is applied as a standard. Small stains can be removed using a clean and slightly damp cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners.
Rococo Pavilion WP1210 This 18th Century design is characterized by lightness, elegance and an exuberant interpretation of the Tree of Life. Rococo Pavilion is an oil painting created by alternating several layers of gesso and oil based paint; between each layer hand antiquing is created by sanding. The large open areas in the background are equally as important as the pattern highlighting variations in both color and texture. A horizontal crease is added to the panels to replicate the joints in tea papers (panels can be ordered without the horizontal crease marks, if desired). Once an acceptable degree of antiquing has been achieved, an oil based glaze is applied to seal the design, then the panels are chalked to achieve a matte finish. The butterflies and other insects are placed at random and, therefore, do not repeat. A specific color palette is created and all colors are mixed by hand; therefore, a certain degree of shade variance in both the design and background are to be expected from one order to the next and may not be an exact match to existing sampling. This is deliberately done to enhance the unique design aesthetic between orders. Due to the handmade nature of Rococo Pavilion, production is extremely labor-intensive and it should be noted that different artists will have slightly different handwriting; sanding will also vary from heavy to light in different areas making each order unique. NOTE: Due to the handmade nature of the design, pattern matching at the seams may not be exact. Color change. If exact color placement is requested, it must be indicated on the order and a specific panel must be referenced. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care, making sure not to scratch the surface. A light protective sealant is applied as a standard. Small stains can be removed using a clean and slightly damp cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners.
Moineau WP1214 Staying true to early 18th Century domino paper design, Moineau is created by silk screen printing 17.5" W x 23.5" H sheets of Xuan paper (traditional Chinese rice paper). The printed paper is then unevenly over-painted with watercolors and then a thin layer of antiquing is added as an all over, uneven wash. The individual pieces of paper are later mounted onto a continuous roll of paper to create the panels; two pieces of paper fit onto one 36" wide panel. A specific color palette was created for Moineau. All colors are mixed by hand; therefore, a degree of variation in shade is to be expected from one order to the next. Color placement in each design element may vary and may not be an exact match to the existing sampling, which is deliberately done to enhance the unique design aesthetic from one order to the next. Number of Panels in Layout: Non-repeating panels, layout customized with each order. Panel dimensions outside of the standard 36" width for a maximum 39" width and 5' to 12' height. Color change of design elements. If exact color placement is requested, it must be indicated on the order form, a specific panel must be referenced and a color swatch provided. Background color change. This is possible however sampling is required. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care making sure not to scratch or wet the surface. Small stains can be removed using a clean dry cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners. Advice on how to remove specific stains or marks will be given once images of the specific affected area are provided. Protective Glaze Additional glazes are available but not recommended as the delicate nature of the painted paper is essential to its charm.
Fleur Dorée WP1215 Works by Paul Balin, fine specialist of gilded leathers and fabrics, was the inspiration behind Fleur Dorée. Fleur Dorée is created on a paper-backed silk ground. The pattern is gilded onto the silk ground then sanded by hand to antique the design. Further antiquing is added with washes of water-based paints and metallic sprayed paints. Several layers of glaze are applied onto the panels to seal them and to stop the gilding from oxidation. This also gives body to the silk and adds sheen to the finished panels. Brush marks are visible throughout the panel and are to be expected. Number of Panels in Layout: One panel with repeating design. Color change. If exact color placement is requested, it must be indicated on the order and a specific panel must be referenced. The miniature design layout will be sent within 7-10 business days after receipt of PO/deposit. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care making sure not to scratch the surface. A light protective sealant is applied as a standard. Small stains can be removed using a clean and slightly damp cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners.
Papillon WP1216 Jean Papillon I, woodblock engraver and Master Domino maker was the founder of the Paris Papillon workshop and brainchild behind this 18th Century movement. Papillon combines pencil drawing with watercolor painting and silk screen printing. The pattern is a hand drawn pencil outline, which is then filled with a watercolor wash on a non-woven watercolor paper. The dot pattern is hand silk screen printed onto the panel using gouache paints which have a rich matte black color. A specific color palette was created for Papillon. All colors are mixed by hand; therefore, a degree of variation in shade is to be expected from one order to the next. Color placement in each design element may vary and may not be an exact match to the existing sampling, which is deliberately done to enhance the unique design aesthetic from one order to the next. Panel Width: 36"+ 1/2" trim/bleed Number of Panels in Layout: Non-repeating panels, layout customized with each order. Panel dimensions outside of the standard 36" width for a maximum 58" width and 5' to 12' height. Color change of design elements. If exact color placement is requested, it must be indicated on the order form, a specific panel must be referenced and a color swatch provided. Background color change. This is possible however sampling is required. The miniature design layout will be sent within 7-10 business days after receipt of PO/deposit.
Gilded Paper - Plains Antique Gold Leaf (WP1217) Burnished Metallic Grounds (WP1218) Tarnished Silver Leaf (WP1220) Antique Gold Leaf - Gold Leaf is hand applied onto black silk, which has a paper backing, the edges of the gold leaf will be visible. Sandpaper is used randomly to create large dark scratches to antique it. Gold leaf may tarnish over time, therefore a subtle change in color is to be expected. A glazed sealant is applied for protection. Burnished Metallic Grounds White Gold - Silver Leaf is hand applied onto paper, the edges of the silver leaf will be visible. Antique oil is applied for antiquing. A glazed sealant is applied for protection. Gold - Gold Leaf is hand applied onto paper, the edges of the gold leaf will be visible. A glazed sealant is applied for protection. Tarnished Silver Leaf - Gesso is applied on a paper base with real silver leaf gilded over the surface. A special technique is used to oxidize the silver leaf and this creates the tarnished effect. This process is followed by an opaque wash and finished with an acrylic glaze sealant. The production of this paper is extremely complicated, all hand-done, therefore color variations are to be expected. Panel Width: 36" Panel Height: Sold in one yard increments, two yard minimum order required. Panel dimensions outside of the standard 36 width for a maximum 39 width. Upon receipt of PO/deposit please allow 8-10 weeks for panel production. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care. A light protective sealant is applied as a standard. Small stains can be removed using a clean and slightly damp cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners.
Tea Paper - Plains Plains (WP1221) Antiqued (WP1221A) The Tea Papers are handmade Chinese Xuan paper laid over silk for strength and backed with paper. To create the effects of the original old papers, overlapping sheets of paper are joined to create the visible seams every 36". The seams will come in a half drop layout from panel to panel. All colors are mixed by hand, therefore a degree of variation in shade is to be expected from one order to the next. Several layers of watercolor washes are applied and left to dry. Each layer is randomly sanded, heavier in some areas and lighter in others to antique it. Brush marks and watermarks will be visible and are to be expected, these are intentional and enhance the overall effect of the antiquing. NOTE: Tea Paper is available in 14 standard colors. These same colors are available with extra antiquing. The antiqued versions of these panels are over-antiqued with a watercolor wash and additional sanding. Panel Width: 36" Panel Height: Sold in one yard increments, two yard minimum order required. Panel dimensions outside of the standard 36" width for a maximum 39 width. No seams or with smaller seamed sections. Upon receipt of PO/deposit please allow 8-10 weeks for panel production. The painted surface is delicate and should be handled with care. Small stains can be removed using a clean dry cloth. DO NOT apply chemical cleaners. Advice on how to remove specific stains or marks will be given once images of the specific affected areas are provided.
