Character Lesson written by Dr. Ed ReRoche: Director of the University of San Diego's Character Development Center
Page 1 Lesson 1: RV and the Museum of Art Art in Motion and Surrealism ART IN MOTION: Still Art and Visual Motion: a. Animation Sequential Repetition to Create Movement i. Boccioni ii. Duchamp iii. Activity The fine art reproductions in this study guide are displayed with permission. The original works can be seen at the New York Museum of Modern Art: Have you ever considered how art that does not move can communicate motion? A painting or a drawing cannot move, but the images in them can appear to be moving. Look at these comics for example: #1 #2 In drawing #1 There is no motion communicated. In drawing #2 The car looks like it is speeding. Repetition within a painting or drawing can also communicate motion. Look at the painting by Umberto Boccioni called, States of Mind II, Those Who Go. Boccioni, Umberto ( ) States of Mind II: Those Who Go Oil on canvas, 27 7/8 x 37 3/4". Gift of Nelson A. Rockefeller. ( ) Location : The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, U.S.A. Photo Credit : Digital Image (c) The Museum of Modern Art/ Licensed by SCALA / Art Resource, NY
Page 2 Look at this parody painting of RV, the Racer Aardvark. RV appears to be moving. This painting of RV, the Racer Aardvark is called a parody because it is a humorous imitation of a famous painting by the artist, Marcel Duchamp. To see Duchamp s painting Go to: anent/51449.html?mulr=1934 The two paintings by Boccioni and Duchamp are early experiments with animation. Animation is an art form that uses a sequence of slightly varying images so that they appear to move and change when the sequence is shown. Cartoons are an example of this. RV is a unicycle racer. What other unicycle did you see in the film lesson? Activities: 1. Draw a still drawing of an object. Next try drawing that same object as if it were moving. 2. Create Drawings that Move: Creating a Flipbook What you need: A package of memo pad paper, preferably a glue-top scratch pad. You can use any size, but 3x5 or 4x6 is perfect for making a book. Pencils and Eraser Crayons, Colored Pencils, or Marker Fun ideas for things to draw
Page 3 CREATE DRAWINGS THAT MOVE: Creating a Flipbook What you do: You can use a glue-top note pad and simply tear off a group of pages for your flipbook. The glue-top will hold the pages together like a book. To begin, select something you want to see move. Birds, butterflies and stick figures are good subjects. Think about how you want the motion to start and end. Plan the character and story or sequence you wish to show. The action may take just a few pages or it could take many pages. Map out your sequence on scrap paper before starting to draw in the book. Start with a pencil and eraser in case you change your mind about the picture. Tip: Start drawing on the last page and work to the top page. This makes it easier to see what you have already done and it allows you to line up the next frame of the picture/sequence in the same position. You can either trace or redraw most of that image changing a section of it slightly to give the illusion of movement. Keep the figure as close as possible to the edge of the page. You can add color if you like to the drawing as well. Continue to flip and cover and redraw until the action sequence is complete. When you are done, flip the pages as if thumbing through a book and watch your drawings come alive! Hint: Faster motion needs fewer drawings.
Page 4 b. Optical Motion Use of geometric images i. Optical Illusions ii. Kaleidoscope moves away from still art iii. M.C. Escher iv. Compare to other disciplines Geometric progression - Math v. Activity Another way to create motion in art is to use geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, etc. Geometric shapes and symmetry can create optical illusions of motion like this example: "Rotating snakes #9" Each snake appears to rotate. Copyright A.Kitaoka 2004 Used w/permission Keep in mind that this is a static image. It is not animated in any way, but as your vision moves back and forth the center area seems to be moving toward the center (contracting) and the outer edges seem to be moving away (expanding) from the center. Also worth noting is that if you fixate on a point in the center and don't move your eyes this anomalous motion will stop. opticalillusions4kids.blogspot.com
Page 5 Optical illusions are often designed through using the mathematical rules of geometric progression. In mathematics, a geometric series is a series with a constant ratio between successive terms. For example, the series: is geometric, because each term is equal to half of the previous term. The sum of this series is 1, as illustrated in the following picture: The sum of the areas of the purple squares is one third of the area of the large square: M.C. Escher was an artist who was well known for his mathematical prints and use of optical illusions in Fine Art: Activity: You can create your own optical illusions with the Mind s Eye kit in the Learning Center.
Page 6 A kaleidoscope is an optical instrument, which contains bits of colored shapes, and by holding them loosely at the end of a rotating tube, can show continually changing symmetrical forms by reflection in two or more mirrors set at angles to each other. A kaleidoscope combines motion with patterns of shapes and color to create continually shifting images. Can you find the kaleidoscope images in the RV, the Racer Aardvark film lesson? Activity: 1. You can make your own kaleidoscope with the kit found in the Eccentric Racing Network Learning Center. ART IN MOTION: Art that Moves: Marcel Duchamp s Bicycle Wheel i. Kinetics ii. Compare to other disciplines - Physics iii. Use of Everyday Objects iv. Link to MoMa i-tunes Kinetic Art: Kinetic means, motion. Kinetic Art really does move. Marcel Duchamp s Bicycle Wheel is an example of kinetic art. It is a kinetic sculpture. Duchamp, Marcel ( ) ARS, NY Bicycle Wheel. New York 1951 (third version, after lost original of 1913). Metal wheel mounted on painted wooden stool, 50 1/2" high, 25 1/2" wide; stool, 23 3/4" high. Gift of the Sidney and Harriet... Location: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, U.S.A. Photo Credit: Digital Image (c) The Museum of Modern Art/Licensed by SCALA / Art Resource, NY Duchamp Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / ADAGP, Paris / Succession Marcel Duchamp
Page 7 In physics, kinetics is one of the branches of dynamics, concerned with what motions of bodies are produced under the action of particular forces. This is often referred to as mechanics. A gyroscope and a slinky are examples of kinetic objects. You will find these available in the Learning Center. Marcel Duchamp used every day objects to create his sculpture, Bicycle Wheel. Click here to listen to Marcel Duchamp talk about his sculpture on i-tunes. (MoMa) In the film lesson, which works of art moved that were not supposed to be able? 2. SURREALISM 1. Brief Study on 2 Art Pieces a. Magritte s False Mirror another example of parody link to MoMA b. Dali s Persistence of Memory link to MoMA c. Activity Surrealism was a movement in art and literature that flourished in the early twentieth century. Surrealism aimed at expressing imagination. In the painting, The False Mirror, the artist Rene Magritte uses his imagination by painting a cloudy sky where the colored part of the eye (the iris) should be. By doing this, he turns the human eye into an unusual landscape. Is Magritte s painting a parody of the human eye? Another example of parody is in the film where RV races inside an imitation of Magritte s painting. Magritte, René ( ) ARS, NY The False Mirror Oil on canvas, 21 1/4 x 31 7/8 in. Purchase. ( ) Location: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, U.S.A. Photo Credit : Digital Image (c) The Museum of Modern Art/Licensed by SCALA / Art Resource, NY Magritte C. Herscovici, London / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York In Salvador Dali s painting, The Persistence of Memory, the artist uses his imagination by putting a melting clock into a surrealistic landscape. Parents and Teachers:

Take some drawing paper and colored pencils. Think of a few items that are man made or do not belong together. Create a landscape scene with them. Stretch your imagination. Careers in Art: If you think you may like to be an artist one day, you should know that today there are many career choices. You could choose from flash animation for websites, 3D animation for film and video, comic book art, game design, fabric print design, illustration and fine art just to name a few. Activity 3: NCTE/IRA Literacy Standard 3:Comprehension Literacy Standard 5: Writing Literacy Standard 6: Application Literacy Standard 11: Reflection CA-Visual Arts Standards 3.0 Artistic Expression 4.0 Creative Expression 5.0 Connections, Relationships, Applications As you know, the main purpose of advertisements is to persuade people to buy a product or service. Using RV-The Racer Aardvark for your main character, write a 30-second radio commercial (script) or create a 30-second video selling the character trait of kindness to an audience of teen-aged listeners. Try it out at home or in your class. Activity 4: NCTE/IRA Literacy Standard 3: Comprehension Literacy Standard 5: Writing Literacy Standard 6: Application Literacy Standard 11: Reflection CA-Visual Arts Standards 5.0 Artistic Expression 6.0 Creative Expression 5.0 Connections, Relationships, Applications Find the comic pages in your local newspaper. With a red marker, mark the comics you found in which the character(s) showed disrespect. Mark these strips with a DR. Do the same for characters that are being unkind. Mark these comics with a UK. Next, take a blue marker and find comic strips that tell the story or have characters are showing kindness and mark with a K; respect with an R. Finally, carefully study the comics in your newspaper. Notice that comic strip writers usually use three or four panels to tell the story with one or two main characters. A one-
panel comic is called a cartoon that you will find on the comics pages. Using RV-The Racing Aardvark draw-write a comic strip about the character trait of kindness and then do one for respect. If you like doing this activity, also try your skills at drawing a cartoon (one-panel) that tells about kindness and/or respect. Activity 5: NCTE/IRA Literacy Standard 3: Comprehension Literacy Standard 5: Writing Literacy Standard 6: Application Literacy Standard 11: Reflection In your own words write what each of these quotes have to do with the character traits of respect and kindness. The only way to have a friend is to be one. Ralph Waldo Emerson Three things in human life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. The third is to be kind. Henry James You don t have to blow out the other fellow s light to let your own shine. Bernard Baruch Your turn: List some acts of kindness that has happened to you in the past few weeks. How about respect how did you show it? Kindness-It happened to me! I showed respect Character Lesson written by Dr. Ed ReRoche: Director of the University of San Diego's Character Development Center
