48 The Tile Guide TILE SHADING & DIGITAL VARIATION Modern tile production utilises high definition digital printing often replicating widely varying colours, effects and textures typically found, for example, in stones and wood. This variation cannot be fully represented in a single sample tile. Therefore please ensure the consumer is fully aware of the possible variation by viewing multiple pieces and/or a representative image prior to fixing. The variation of colour, texture, and tone between individual ceramic tiles is termed as colour shade variation. Variation in colour and shade is an inherent characteristic of any fired product and can actually enhance the character and beauty of the finished project. Photographic images of tiles may not always show the true colour, finish or texture of the tile itself. Porcelain tiles are durable and stain resistant, but in the case of polished porcelain the credit belongs more to the tile sealer than to the tile itself. In the process of polishing porcelain, the manufacturer buffs off the top particles of the tile, giving the clay a porous surface. To protect your floor from stains and scratches, immediately seal it after installing it using a penetrating sealer. This type of sealer doesn t just sit on top of the tile, it seeps into the surface, reinforcing it from within. We recommend a product from All For Stone called Seal Gold. FIXING ADVICE FOR OBLONG TILES ON WALLS & FLOORS Despite the popularity of brick bond fixing in the UK, European and US tile markets, it is becoming apparent that this method of tiling is unsuitable for today s modern large format tiles. As tiles become larger it is impossible to guarantee that they will always be totally flat. All tiles regardless of their origin are susceptible to warpage during the manufacturing process, and as a result there are tolerances in place to allow for this inherent curvature. The longer the tile the greater level of allowed curvature as the measurement is calculated in mm as a percentage of the tile s length. Taking this information into consideration it is the view of our suppliers that we cannot endorse any installations where a brick bond fixing method has been used. We are happy to endorse stacked bond, or staggered bond where tiles are offset by no more than 30%. Where either a wall or floor tile is fixed using staggered bond, a suitable size grout joint must be used which does not exaggerate any of the inherent curvature that may be present in the product. WHAT IS PEI AND R RATING? PEI stands for the Porcelain and Enamel Institute s wear rating. PEI rates a glazed tile s ability to resist abrasion and its suitability as a floor tile. The R rating or resistance level is a measure used by professionals to determine the anti slip properties of a floor tile, with R9 being the lowest or worst rating and R13 being the highest or best rating.
