1 Honors Art History Lisa Hodgins Summer Work 2013 Directions: Please complete the following work and send a hard copy to my home. Mark each section clearly. Postdate it no later than the third Saturday of August. Most importantly, have fun!!! My address: Lisa Hodgins 23 Forest Street Branchville, NJ Part I Vocabulary It is important that we are all familiar with some terms so we can discuss art. For this reason, please define the following vocabulary words, and become familiar with their use in the world of art. Include a visual example of each term (except numbers two and eleven) with your written definition. The list is near the end of this document. Part II Elements and Principles of Design Become familiar with the building blocks of the visual arts. Create a collection of images that illustrate these concepts. Add written commentary and explanations. Elements of Design Line, Color, Shape, Form, Space, Value, Texture Principles of Design Rhythm/Movement, Harmony/Unity, Emphasis/Variety, Balance, Proportion. 2 Part III Looking at Art The Critique We will be using the following method to look at art. Over the summer please practice seeing with Marc Chagall s painting, I and the Village and another painting of your choice. Be sure to bring in a color copy of the painting you are choosing to critique. Art Critique: Description Describe just what you see. The colors, the shapes, exactly what the picture is of whether that is strictly color and line or of the details of da Vinci s Last Supper. Describe the art as if you were describing it to someone who has never seen it. Analysis - Before doing the Analysis, it helps to have a checklist of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Not every Element or Principle will be used in every work of art. Here is the section where you will express your thoughts about what the message of the artwork is. What idea does this work represent? This section relies on your knowledge of the Elements Of Art and Principles of Design to articulate in an intelligent manner the information or clues you see in the work. Interpretation - Here you are invited to express your opinions about what you think the artist meant. Now you have the opportunity to discuss what this work means to you Evaluation/Judgment - This is the time for you to tell whether or not you like the art. This section is for your opinion. Is this piece successful? Why? Why not? You should be able to back up your opinion. For more info see -
3 Part IV Reading Please read the introduction to the book What is Art by John Canaday (at the end of this document). Write a short reaction to the reading (please type no more than two double spaced pages with an MLA heading). Part V The Metropolitan Museum of Art The Metropolitan Museum of Art has an extremely valuable website that we will be using. It is offers the history of art broken into different periods with tremendous amounts of information. Please become familiar with this site. The Timeline of Art History please navigate through this section and learn to use the different methods of accessing information. It s amazing and gives detailed information, much of which we will study! Create your own collection in a word document, collect together your favorite pieces form the museum. Include 10 pieces from the museum. Be sure to include the pertinent information about each piece (i.e. title, artist, date, place of origin, etc.). Here is the link:
