2 INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TEACHER Introduces Saplings by the River by Pieter van Veen, Scene du Jardin by Henri Manguin, and/or Sunflowers by Van Gogh. Asks students to analyze the colors they see based on the color Talk with a neighbor about the color palette you see: note descriptive words, and find the range of colors you see on a color What colors do you see? Where are they on the color wheel? What is the impact of this palette choice? (harmony, lack of discord) What challenges did the artist face in selecting this range of colors? We call these colors analogous (similar) because there is a lack of contrast and they can be found adjacent to one another on the color Share words that you and a peer identified that describe the impact of color choices in the art. Share where you found colors you saw on the color STUDENT Analyzes analogous colors with a peer and shares descriptive language, ideas, and range of color identified on the color Directs students to observe four distinct arrangements of still life objects and asks students to select one still life arrangement as their subject matter. Guides the observation process. Remember before you begin to draw, analyze the relationship of the shapes, the contours of the objects, and fill the page with your composition. Directs students to select and use analogous colors for this still life composition regardless of the actual color of the objects. Then directs students to work in oil pastels to complete composition. Regardless of the local (actual) colors you see in the objects in the still life, you will need to translate what you see into a palette of analogous colors; and none of the colors has to be local to the subject matter. Each of you has been given a full set of oil pastels (16-24 colors). From the full box, select a set of three colors to represent your analogous palette. Although we see green in the stems of some flowers, the challenge is to only use these three colors. Fill your whole page with color so that it seems complete. Many artists feel that limiting their color palette actually inspires them to be more creative. Reviews and demonstrates oil pastel techniques. We can use oil pastels to create texture with different kinds of strokes, blend to smooth areas either within one color or from one color to another, and we can layer color to create complex colors. I ll be looking for use of at least one oil pastel technique in your work rather than coloring in. Guides criteria-based reflection with focus on creative techniques. Draws a light pencil drawing first (whisper lines). Selects analogous color palette from a broad range of colors found in a full set of oil pastels. 5 Looking: Tell Me About Your Art! Dear Sixth Grade Families: Today we made a still life with ANALOGOUS COLORS. We looked at Saplings by the River by Pieter van Veen, Scene du Jardin by Henri Manguin, and/or Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh and analyzed the palette, or color choices made by each artist. Talking: Making: We talked about how color palette can create a harmonious effect and identified the range of colors used by each artist on a color We selected an analogous palette for our own still life drawing made with oil pastels. We selected only three colors from a large range of colors given to us. We used at least one of three oil pastel techniques: strokes, blending, and layering. Art at Home Together: You could find examples of analogous colors in your environment. You could select analogous colors from a crayon box. Questions to ask: Where do you see analogous colors the most often? Natural world? Interior spaces?
