3 What Is an Artist? You know that a person who paints is an artist. A person who illustrates, or draws, is also an artist. But did you know there are many other kinds of artists, too? paints 2 Artists who paint use supplies like this.

5 Costume Designer Think about a movie you liked. What did the actors wear in the movie? Maybe they wore clothes from a long time ago. Maybe they wore clothes from a far-off place. Actors wear costumes, or special clothes, in a movie. A costume designer is a person who makes, or designs, the clothes that an actor wears in a movie. First, the costume designer does research to find out what kind of costumes to make. The designer learns what the movie is about. The designer needs to know the movie s setting, or where the movie happens. Then the designer thinks about what clothes the actor should wear. The designer makes sketches and drawings of the costumes. Then people make the costumes, and the actors wear the costumes in the movie! A costume designer makes a drawing of a costume. The actor wears the costume in a movie.

7 Architect An architect is a person who plans what a building will look like. An architect is also a kind of artist. Architects plan many kinds of buildings. They plan schools, bus stations, and office buildings. Architects planned almost every building you see! Architects plan what a building will look like. architects model of a building

8 part of a building workers Workers follow an architect s plan when they make a building. First, architects ask questions about the building they will plan. What will the building be used for? Will it be a store? Will it be a house? Will the building be big? Will it be small? Architects make a few scribbles on paper to get ideas. When they are happy with their drawings, architects make a model. A model is a very small example of a building, a little bit like a dollhouse. Then architects make a final plan. Workers look carefully at the architects plans. The workers follow the plans to make the building! 7

9 Display Artist Do you ever stop and stare in store windows? Sometimes windows are filled with amazing displays, or things to look at. A display artist is someone who makes store windows look special. The display artist s job is to make you stop and look at what is in the window! Display artists have to be good at lots of things. They have to be good painters because window displays often have painted walls and pictures. Display artists also have to build many window displays with hammers and other tools. Display artists use tools to build window displays. tools 8

10 window display Display artists make special store windows for holidays. First, display artists imagine what a store window will look like. Then they draw sketches of the display. Finally, the artists and other workers make or find all the items they need to make the display. A good window display makes you smile. A really good display makes you go into the store! 9

11 Face Painter At fairs or parties, sometimes you will see kids with art right on their faces! This art is the work of a face painter. A face painter is an artist who paints on people s skin. Face painters start by making a plan. What will they paint? What colors will they use? Then face painters start to paint on someone s face. Some face painters paint flowers, stars, or butterflies. Other face painters make people look like dogs, cats, or even monsters! Some face painters use glitter. Glitter makes sparkly textures on a person s face. Face painters use brushes, just like other painters do. 10

13 Mural Artist Have you ever seen a very big picture on the wall of a building? A very big picture painted on a wall is called a mural. The person who makes murals is called a mural artist. The mural artist first makes a sketch on paper. The sketch shows what the mural will look like. Then the mural artist can use a machine to show the sketch on the wall. The machine makes the sketch much bigger, too. The mural artist draws over the sketch onto the wall with a pencil. It s like making a copy of a picture using tracing paper. Then the mural artist uses paint to color in the sketch. A machine like this shines a sketch on the wall. 12

15 Artists work everywhere! 14 When you go for a walk in a city or town, think about all the art you see. Think about the different kinds of artists who made the art. Then you will remember there are artists all around you!
