1 EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF TAX AW PROFESSORS (EATP) CONGRESS May 30 May 2015, University of Milan, Italy Partner program 2015 Milano City Tour Santa Maria presso San Satiro Our city tour starts from Università degli Studi di Milano. First visit will be the church Santa Maria presso San Satiro. The church lies on the site of a primitive worship place erected by the archbishop Anspertus in 879, dedicated to Saint Satyrus, confessor and brother of Saints Ambrose. The current church was instead built from 1472 to 1482 under commission from Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza. According to some sources, the designer was Main

2 Donato Bramante. However, recent documents prove that Bramante had a minor role, most of the work being attributable to Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. It is certain that Bramante is responsible for the sacristy perspective. The edifice has a nave and two aisles with barrel vault. The nave is surmounted by a hemispherical dome at the crossing with the transept. The choir, which had to be truncated a depth of only 90 cm due to the presence of a main road, was replaced by Bramante with a painted perspective, realizing in this way one of first examples of trompe l'oeil in history of art. Museo Poldi Pezzoli Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli was born in Milan on 27 July His father Giuseppe Poldi Pezzoli ( ) in 1818 had inherited a considerable estate from the Pezzoli Family, who had been in charge of the tax collecting for the Austrian government. In 1819 Giuseppe married Rosa Trivulzio ( ), the daughter of Marquis Gian Giacomo ( ), heir of the most famous Milanese private museum. A man of great culture, he was a collector of precious objects and antique books for the family library, known as the Trivulziana ibrary. At his father s death, Gian Giacomo was only eleven and Rosa took charge of his education, while continuing her friendship with artists and literates. The Poldi Pezzoli Artistic Foundation was created in 1881, alongside the opening of the Museum. The Foundation looks after over 6000 artworks (paintings and applied arts). Today it is an Onlus (a no-profit institution), governed by a Board of Trustees (link), which includes: the Superintendent of the Cultural Heritage of Milan, representatives of the Ministry for Culture, of the ombardy Region, of the Province of Milan, of the City of Milan, and of the Main Supporters, as well as a heir of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli. 3 Poldi Pezzoli Museum serves as frame for an impressive collection of Renaissance Italian paintings, but also for a unique collection of decorative arts, namely porcelain, glasses, textiles, clocks, jewellery and metalworks. The Museum is committed to organise exhibitions in Italy and abroad and to co-ordinate researches and publications. The conservation department regularly publishes books on restoration regarding the different objects of the collections. Pinacoteca di Brera The international museum Brera's Art Gallery, built in 1776 next to the Fine Arts Academy thanks to Maria Teresa d'austria, had an educational purpose: it was supposed to collect exemplar pieces, destined to the students' education. When Milan became the capital city of the Italian Realm, Napoleone established it as a collection of the most significant artworks from all the conquered areas. Therefore Brera, unlike other great Italian museums wasn't born from aristocratic private collecting, but from a political and public one. The collections are particularly important in understanding the history of the visual art in northern Italy between the 14th and 18th centuries. There are also excellent examples of Renaissance works, and famous, if not numerous, paintings by other Italian and foreign Old Masters. In the last few decades, Brera had made marked improvements to the exhibition of its treasures, which had increased in number thanks also to the addition of two outstanding private Milanese collections of modern art, the first being the Donazione Jesi (a permanent purchase), the other the Deposito Jucker (on loan). 4 During that period the Brera gallery frequently mounted temporary exhibitions, drawing from material in its permanent collections and in store, and it developed a temporary loans policy. Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera The Academy was founded in 1776 by Maria Theresa of Austria with the objective to teach and research within the creative arts and cultural historical disciplines. Under the current Italian regulations, the Brera Academy issues academic diplomas of first level (equivalent to degree) and academic diplomas of second level (equivalent to master's degree). In 2005 the teaching of the academy has been classified by UNESCO as "A5". It is also regarded as one of the world s leading academic institutions. The Academy has about students, including about foreign students (mostly postgraduates). It actively exchanges students and teachers with other European countries through the ERASMUS programme, and since 2006, with countries outside EU such as Japan, China, Hong Kong, Mexico, Taiwan and Australia.
