Cotton Plant to Cotton Shirt Cotton Plant to Cotton Shirt By Lola M. Schaefer Table of Contents How Is My Cotton Shirt Made?... 4 How Is the Cotton Cleaned?.. 8 How Is Cotton Made into a Shirt?... 9 How Does My Shirt Get to the Store?.. 12 Glossary and Index.16 By Lola M. Schaefer

This is my cotton shirt. I like this shirt more than my other shirts. I like the way it feels. It is soft. I like the color. It is blue. I wear my cotton shirt almost every day. 2 3

How Is My Cotton Shirt Made? My cotton shirt was made from plants. The cotton plants grow flower buds called bolls. Many seeds are inside each boll. Cotton grows from each seed. This is a field of cotton plants. Farmers grow cotton plants where it is warm and sunny. The inside of a cotton boll looks like this before it is ripe and ready to pick. 4 5

Farmers pick the cotton when it is ripe. They use big machines to pull the cotton and seeds out of the bolls. Farm workers put all of the cotton together. They take the cotton to a cotton gin. Cotton taken from the plants needs to be cleaned. 6 7

How Is the Cotton Cleaned? Workers pull the cotton into a cotton gin. The cotton gin cleans the cotton. How Is Cotton Made into a Shirt? Farmers sell the clean cotton to a cotton mill. The workers at the mill spin the cotton into yarn. The yarn is turned into cloth. Cotton gins are machines that get rid of the seeds, dirt, and sticks from the cotton. 8 9

The workers color the cloth. Then they cut the cloth. Workers sew the cloth together. One worker sews arms. Another worker sews pockets. This cloth will make many blue shirts

How Does My Shirt Get to the Store? When the shirts are done, the workers put the shirts into large boxes. The boxes are put onto trucks. Truck drivers take the boxes of shirts to stores. Store workers take the shirts out of the boxes. They put the shirts out in their stores

When I saw this shirt in the store, I liked it. I liked how it felt. I liked how it looked. My mom paid for the shirt. Now I wear it almost every day! 14 15
