2 History & Table of Contents The Wooster Brush Company was established in 1851 and is one of the oldest manufacturers of paint applicators in the USA. Our company founder, Adam Foss, traveled from Pennsylvania to Ohio to set up shop. He began producing handmade bristle paintbrushes in a small, two-story building in Wooster, Ohio, and then sold the brushes door-to-door throughout the state. The Wooster Brush Company acquired land on Madison Avenue in 1909, and a new factory was built. The structure was 70-feet wide and 200-feet long, providing three times as much floor space as before. The Madison Avenue site in Wooster, Ohio is still the location of company headquarters today. Since Adam s time, the company has elected only nine presidents; William S. Fagert, Wooster s current president, was elected on August 1, After more than 165 years in business, Wooster has established many milestones in the industry: Invention of popular paintbrush styles such as the angle sash and the Shasta Development of the Foss-set process to cement bristle into paintbrushes First to use nylon filaments to create brushes that performed in latex paints Creation of the Exploded-Tip process to make soft flags on filament ends Adam Foss First to introduce synthetic fabrics for roller covers, now an industry standard Wooster has continued this tradition of ground-breaking development and today is known as the top applicator innovator. 28 Roller Covers Roller Covers Making the Right Choice Approximately 80-90% of the surface of most painting jobs will be coated using a roller cover; choosing a tool that is best-suited for the project is essential for achieving a successful application. Woven vs. Knit How a roller fabric is constructed is very important. The more securely fibers are attached to their backing, the less likely a roller is to shed. Think of knitted roller fabrics like shoelaces that have been tied; and woven roller fabrics are like double-knotting those shoelaces. Woven Woven fabrics have a backing with a tighter cross section. The pile yarns are made with a twist that helps lock the fibers into the backing, and they are secured using two pass-throughs. This double-lock process results in a shed-resistant fabric that provides a smooth, virtually lint-free finish. Woven rollers may be used with confidence in enamels, primers, and all paints. Knit Knitted fabrics have a looped backing, and the pile fibers are secured to the backing with a single pass-through. The resulting fabric is more open than a woven, so it can pickup and release more paint for fast coverage. Knit rollers are typically recommended for flat, eggshell, or satin paints and stains. Nap Height & Suggested Surfaces Nap, or pile height, is the length of the fibers that extend from the backing of a roller cover and carry the paint to the surface being coated. Basically, for smooth surfaces use a shorter pile; rough surfaces need a longer pile that is capable of reaching into the valleys of a texture. The cage has minimal side-to-side movement for better control to paint a clean, straight edge and get very close to corners. Bearings Provide super-smooth rolling action and eliminate potential gray streaking by keeping the moving cage off of the chromed shank. Shank Sweet Spot To remove the roller cover, rap the frame in the 90º bend. This part of the shank is elongated to make it an easier target to hit. GT Insert Black reinforced collar in many Wooster professional tools that has threads for standard extension poles, plus eliminates twisting when used with Sherlock GT poles. Retaining Ring Securely locks the roller on the cage, so it won t slip or fall off during painting. When the job is done, it allows the roller to release hands free with a soft rap on the edge of a paint bucket or trash can.
