1 Dear Co-workers, The Georgia 4-H Quilt has graced the banquet room in Sutton Dining Hall at Rock Eagle since State Council of The quilt was done as a historical project for Georgia 4-H. Since that time, the State 4-H Faculty has received numerous inquiries about the quilt from counties who did not develop a square for the quilt the first time around. The Georgia 4-H Centennial Committee wants to expand this project. We would like to offer your county a chance to develop a quilt square representing your county which would be added in an additional panel to the quilt. Here is the tentative time frame for this project: April 1, 2004 June 1, 2004 August 15, 2004 November 1, 2004 March 1, 2005 June, 2005 Counties commit to participate. Sketch of county design due to State 4-H Office County design returned with specific instructions on how to complete square. Completed quilt square due to State 4-H Office. Target date for completion of new quilt panel. Dedicate quilt panel at State 4-H Council. A sub-committee of the Georgia 4-H Centennial Committee composed of Lorraine Payne, Doris Belcher and Cheryl Varnadoe are the coordinators for this project. WHAT TO DO 1. Decide whether or not your county wants to participate. If yes, return the enclosed form by April 1, Decide how you want to involve 4-H ers and/or volunteer leaders to select and design your county s square. As a committee? Through a contest? This should be a county 4-H effort not just an Extension staff effort. The more interest and involvement you can generate, the better. 3. Select the emblem to represent your county. In keeping with the theme of Georgia s 4-H history, and the original quilt, use the list below as a guide for selecting your county s emblem. Within these categories your imagination is your only limit!
2 Main 4-H event or a distinctive event in county: arts and crafts festival, music festival, rodeo, livestock show, fair, barbeque, parade. Symbol of county s economy: agricultural crop or product, manufactured product, major industry, major tourist attraction Symbol of county s 4-H project work: project such as a specific crop or livestock animal; fair participation; fund-raising or recreational activity. Symbol of county s history: antebellum home; county landmark; state first : When and where first 4-H club started in county, first public school or library, first railroad; historical figure: famous person, public official, teacher, settler; famous battle site. Select one simple design to represent your county. Specific examples might be: Granite - Pickens County; Midway Church Liberty County; Mountains Union County. (These suggestions are only examples; these counties may use any symbol they want, if they decide to participate.) A drawing of a sample square (apples) is attached to give you an idea of what yours should look like. The design should be simple and uncluttered to make transfer to needlework possible. Your county s emblem can be designed for any technique that is workable on a quilt square. Consider combining one or more techniques, such as embroidery, appliqué, cross-stitch, trapunto, crewel or patchwork. Your creativity is limited only by your choice of design. The finished square will be an 8 x 10 horizontal square with a 1 contrasting border to be added when the quilt is pieced. 4. Choose the person(s) (can be either a 4-H er or volunteer leader) to sketch the design. This person should be able to sketch well enough to give a good representation of your idea. If a photograph would help the artist in redesigning your square, please include it with the design sketch. 5. Draw sketch on a sheet of graph paper. On sketch label colors and needlework techniques to be used in carrying out the design. 6. Write a brief paragraph about your county s emblem. Include why you chose it and its significance to 4-H for your county. 7. Mail sketch and description to Cheryl Varnadoe at State 4-H Office before June 1, Do not fold sketch mail flat with a piece of lightweight cardboard or heavy paper under it.
3 By August 15 you will receive a kit from the committee with your sketch, the quilt square and all fabrics, threads, etc., and instructions needed to execute your design. Your completed square will be due no later than November 1, We look forward to hearing from you and hope you will choose to participate. If you have questions, please call me at Sincerely, Cheryl Varnadoe Extension 4-H Specialist Marketing, Public Relations and Recruitment
