1 A Stuffed Fabric Pumpkin - For Decorating Your Home Debbie Colgrove, Licensed to About.com Pumpkin Pillows with Artificial Vines to Decorate for Thanksgiving and Halloween This free pillow pattern creates a pumpkin that will allow you to decorate for Halloween and Thanksgiving. There are two sizes available. When I started this idea, I thought that plain orange and green fabric was the answer. I soon discovered that using a calico, with a non distinct print, gave the pumpkins a more realistic appearance. Create an entire pumpkin patch by using various orange prints. I would love to try this project with some of the beautiful fall prints that are available. Being familiar with soft sculpture techniques will help you create these pumpkins but they are also a great way to experience how soft sculpture transforms a stuffed item. As you can see by the photos, there will be some variations in sizes and shapes due to how the "pumpkin" is stuffed. As with any soft sculpture project, no two will be perfectly a like. Materials Print out of Pumpkin Pillow Pattern and/orf Small Pumpkin Pillow Pattern Orange Fabric (calico or plain orange) 1/2 yard will yield a large and a small pumpkin Orange Thread Poly-Fill or stuffing (The better quality stuffing gives you a smoother finished project.) Orange Embroidery Thread Green Fabric (calico or plain green)1/4 yard Green Thread VERY Strong Thread or Button And Carpet Thread Optional: Craft or Artificial Leaf Vines Optional: Black Felt and fusible web and Hot or fabric glue - Or temporary basting spray applied to the back of the felt Cutting out the Fabric for a Fabric Pumpkin Cutting Cut eight sections of the pumpkin body piece. These may be cut on the lengthwise or crosswise grain of the fabric. They must be cut on a straight grain to avoid the pumpkin twisting. Cut two pieces of the stem. All directions refer to using 1/4" seam allowances.
2 Pumpkin Body Assembly Assembly Pumpkin Body: Begin by joining two pumpkin sections, wrong sides together, on one edge. Be sure to back stitch at the ends. The seams will come apart when you are stuffing it if you do not back stitch. Open the joined section and join another pumpkin body section to one side. Repeat the above step until all sections are joined together. Join the two ends together to form a ball. One end of the ball will be closed and the other will have an opening for you to stuff through. Turn the fabric to the right sides out. Stuffing and Closing the Fabric Pumpkin Stuff the ball to a semi firm stage. Stuff from the center and work the stuffing out to the sides to obtain a smooth exterior on the pumpkin. A semi firm stage is similar to a couch cushion. It will have some give but is firm to a light touch. Thread a needle with VERY strong thread. Leave a 6" tail on the thread by knotting (large knot) the thread at least 6" from the end. Make a running stitch around the opening that you have used to stuff the ball. Pull the thread to gather the opening closed. Tack the threads to tie it off and use the tail that you left to knot and anchor your stitches as you close it. This will be hidden under the stem so neatness is not imperative, but you do want to draw it tight so that it allwill be hidden under the stem. Sculpting the Fabric Pumpkin Roll the ball on the floor or with your hands to smooth out the ball and obtain the basic shape that you want for a pumpkin. Try to roll out as many hollows as possible. Thread a large eyed needle with 6 strands of embroidery thread. Tie off the embroidery thread where you pulled tight gathered the top closed. A tail on the thread is also helpful here.(tip :If you do not plan on laundering the pumpkins, "dye" button and carpet thread with permanent marker or paint to have a strong orange thread for sculpting the pumpkin.)
3 Wrap the embroidery thread around the seam lines on your pumpkin. Pull the thread tight, so that the seams indent and tie off after pulling over each seam. You can add extra sections to your pumpkin by repeating evenly between the seam lines. Tie off and cut remaining tails of thread. Stem, Options and Viewer Tip Attaching the Pumpkin Stem Stem Join the two sections together and turn right side out. Be sure to get the top points, turned all the way out. Stuff to a semi firm stage. Use a running stitch along the open edge to close the stem in the same manner that you closed the pumpkin stem Using your hands to shape the stem, flatten the area that you just closed. Use straight pins to hold the stem in place on the top of the pumpkin. Place this on the pumpkin and use a slip stitch to attach the stem. Optional Leaf Decorating Experiment with placing the leaves and vines on the pumpkin. Use a small amount of hot glue to anchor the leaves. Optional Pumpkin face Cut shapes, such as triangles, circles and a mouth to create a jack-o-lantern face. Spray the back of the felt with temporary basting spray and press in place on the pumpkin. Using the temporary spray allows you to also use the pumpkins for Thanksgiving decorations. Use fusible web or a slip stitch to attach the face pieces.
4 Viewer Tip Celia, from Sydney, Australia, ed me this wonderful tip for holding the thread while sculpting the pumpkin. Thank You Celia for sharing!!! Deb, Loooove your pumpkins!! I've made 7 today, 3 small, 4 large, out of wrinkled orange polarfleece that I was going to toss out! Pretty good recycling, eh? They're going to be strung across a stage at the Halloween disco. One tip, I adapted a technique I've used making pincushions. When I've finished sewing the top closed, I sewed a button securely to the top of the pumpkin. Then I was able to use continuous embroidery thread, twisting it around and under the button at the top and going back around the pumpkin etc. The button was then covered up with the stem. (If you want pincushion instructions for a future newsletter, let me know, they were very easy). I embroidered the fronts of the large pumpkins with facial details cut out from black polarfleece. All in all, 7 pumpkins in 3 hours, and an absolute success. Haven't had this much fun since the basketball pattern! ;-) Thanks again, really appreciated this one. Cheers, Celia from Sydney, Australia
