13 Introduction A side from the usual accessories like hats and scarves, crochet isn t fully integrated into the average closet. This seems to be quite typical for most crocheters I know, myself included. In fact, years ago I would not have thought much about adding more than just an occasional accessory to my wardrobe, because the kind of crochet I liked was worked with economical yarns, and I didn t always do things like check for gauge or work up a swatch. Over the years, I ve made the most tremendous friendships around the world with others who crochet professionally, too. They have taught me so very much about color, texture, material, style, and fit as these elements relate to the perfect crochet garment. This is my second collective publication, and within these pages I want to highlight that our love of crochet can easily transform and elevate our closet from fun, everyday pieces to stunning staples that you ll wear for years to come. This collection is an ode to crochet, yes, but it s so much more! These approachable styles were designed with the utmost attention to detail for color, fit, style, and design. Pairing a raw, bulky wool and an openwork stitch (for example) not only can highlight the material but it also creates a phenomenal super scarf! And the perfect shade of forest green for a knee-length duster adds a flair that is unexpected and breathtaking! My hope with this title is that it will become more than just a look book; I want to empower non-crocheters to pick up a hook and challenge crochet lovers to experiment. Try new yarns, colors, textures, and materials to create styles that look and feel incredible. My hope is that your favorite garment will be the one that you crocheted. May the pieces in this book fly from the pages onto your hooks and into your closets forever! Peace + Love + Crochet Salena

20 Finishing & Assembly Use crochet cord or leather purse straps for tote handles. Crochet Cord Row 1: Ch 151, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, fasten off 150 sl sts. Fold tote in half evenly, using ch-3 spaces from Round 30 (34) as a guide, skip 5 ch-3 spaces on both sides, feed crochet cord through both thicknesses of ch-3 space on right side, then again through left side. Knot ends of crochet cord together to fasten, creating a circle that is fed through both thicknesses of Round 30 (34) on tote. Hide the knot by feeding it through to the inside of the tote to hide. Attaching Leather Purse Straps With RS of tote facing, fold in half evenly, use measuring tape to find center point, mark 1 st from Round 33 (37) 2 in./5 cm to left of center point, then another one 2 in./5 cm to the right (leaving a 4 in./10 cm center gap for purse handle). Repeat this for both sides (2 evenly placed handles, ensuring each handle is sewn to one side only so that tote may be opened at full range). With sewing needle and thread, use preformed holes to sew leather strap in place. Sew from marked stitch down final 3 sc rounds of tote. Sew both straps in place (4 ends total) until secure; fasten off thread. ABOUT SALENA BACA

21 Salena learned to crochet before grade school and has been wildly obsessed ever since. After crocheting in the closet most of her life, Salena burst out only after finding Ravelry in Learning that an entire world of crocheters was available to connect with was lifechanging, and it determined her next career move: crochet design and networking. She began designing patterns that appealed to her style and has formed platforms such as Salena Baca Crochet, the Design Wars Challenge, The Pattern Pack, and the American Crochet Association. She s published over 200 patterns, has very strong ties in the crochet and fiber arts community, and has published one other title, Crochet for Christmas. Salena currently lives with her family in Oregon.

33 ABOUT SASCHA BLASE Unfortunately, not everyone has a romantic story about becoming a crochet pattern designer. Being a modern woman, Sascha learned the basics through blogs and YouTube. It did become a love story, however, when she got completely hooked! She created her own craft blog, A la Sascha, mostly related to knitting and crochet, and soon she started designing her own patterns. Her main focus is accessories, but you can also find clothing, toys, and amigurumi in her online shops. Sascha is married, a mother of two, and lives in the Netherlands. She has written and published two Dutch crochet pattern books, Combigurumi and Kant Haken, and is currently working on a new book. In her free time, she works as a medical assistant, so she knows how to use all different kinds of needles.

ABOUT CRYSTAL BUCHOLZ Founder of her namesake brand, Crystalized Designs, Crystal strives to create unique and enjoyable patterns for every kind of crocheter! Crochet became a huge part of her life after she was ordered on bed rest while pregnant with her youngest child. She began her crochet adventures fashioning photography props for her baby, and just a year later she developed her first pattern. Crystal enjoys learning new techniques and teaching others to crochet. When not crocheting, Crystal loves being with her two sons and husband, spending time outdoors, and visiting her family cabin, and it is not uncommon to find her sneaking in some crochet while listening to an audio book.

47 ABOUT HANNAH CROSS Hannah Cross describes her roles at HanJan Crochet as designer, writer, maker, photographer, and chief tea maker. With a daytime (and nighttime) job as a midwife in the United Kingdom, Hannah squeezes crochet into every moment she can around her busy shifts. A desire to make items for friends and their new babies, but a complete inability to follow instructions from other people (ask her husband), led to Hannah designing and creating her own crochet patterns, and she has forged a fun and fresh online presence with HanJan Crochet. Hannah now works as a regular designer for Simply Crochet magazine and as part of the Design Wars team, and she has been featured in Mollie Makes, The Pattern Pack, Happily Hooked magazine, and other publications. Her favorite designs are still baby blankets, and thankfully her friends and family keep producing little ones to keep her busy!

ACCROchet is a play on words that goes a long way toward explaining the person behind the brand: a 40-year-old French-Canadian woman named Julie, who is, of course, a crochet addict. By day, Julie is a marketing and communications professional in an advertising firm a job she loves but her passion comes out after the nine-to-five, when she can finally sit down and create pretty things with yarn and a hook. Julie s family consists of a man, two teenagers, a big dog, a small dog, and a very fat cat. They all live in a pretty blue house on the north shore of Montreal in the province of Québec. Julie keeps all of these lovely people and pets far, far away from her yarn and hooks, except for the female teenager, who will periodically join her in the madness of a few stitches, or sometimes even an entire finished project.

ABOUT ABIGAIL HAZE Following in the footsteps of the creative women in her family, Abigail was always interested in making beautiful things as a child. Much to her mother s dismay, Abigail doodled on furniture, attempted to sew a bathing suit for the cat, and dug into the makeup drawer to paint her face. Eventually, Abigail grew up and figured out how to create beautiful things without making her mother s head spin. She fell in love with crochet during college after watching her roommate learn to stitch. Determined to crochet as perfectly as her great-grandmother once did, Abigail practiced the chain stitch until she had it just right; she made a 30-foot-long chain that night. Since then, Abigail has designed over 100 crochet patterns, and her work has been published in many books and magazines. Her mission is to celebrate the feminine form with flattering and very wearable garment designs. She loves to spend her time experimenting with spicy vegan recipes, watching old musicals, and snuggling with her sweet baby girl.

ABOUT DANYEL PINK After a brief attempt at making doll blankets when she was 10 years old, Danyel Pink didn t really get into crocheting until she was 27. She made afghans for several of her friends and

169 donated dozens of hats to various charities during a particularly uncomfortable pregnancy. Her love of crocheting hats and home decor blossomed into a small online business, and before long she began to design her own colorful crochet patterns. Since then, she has designed over 130 crochet and knitting patterns, and is a published designer whose works have been featured in books, by Red Heart Yarns, and in Crochet Day-to-Day calendars. In 2014, she became the editor-in-chief of Happily Hooked magazine. Danyel is a proud military wife and currently lives in Washington State. Her greatest fans are her three amazing children and her wonderful husband, all of whom are also her biggest inspiration.

ABOUT JONNA VENTURA Sitting at her mother-in-law s dining table years ago, Jonna Ventura admired a beautifully crafted tablecloth. That s crocheted? Handmade? It s amazing! Her interest was sparked, and she dusted off the skill her mother had taught her when she was ten years old. Since that tablecloth, she s been hooked! A Design Wars original, Jonna loves creating patterns that are modern, easy, and fun items that people can t wait to make. Her designs have been published for Red Heart Yarns, in the book Crochet for Christmas, and in Happily Hooked magazine, and they have been featured in various crafting blogs. Born and raised in Michigan, Jonna designs for every season; her favorite people to create for are her husband and three kids. When she s not crocheting, she enjoys board games with family and friends as well as playing around with photography. She will always be thankful for that Italian-styled tablecloth and the spark it lit, because she has found that, with crocheting, the possibilities are truly endless!

To Danyel, Emily, and Abigail: Thanks to Abigail and Danyel for the wonderful time we spent fine-tuning submissions! Our collective conversations were a perfect complement to make sure we had the right pieces for this collection. Thanks again to Abigail for her phenomenal talents in pairing together the perfect materials and colors for this collection. Thanks finally to Danyel and Emily for painstakingly tech editing, proofing, and formatting every single word in this book. You ladies are truly the best team I ve worked with, and I can t praise you enough! To the crochet designers: I am inspired by your work. Your passion for crochet, attention to the smallest detail, and ability to set new merits in the crochet community amaze me. Thank you for trusting your brand, and your hard work, to be featured on the pages of this collection. To the models and photographer: My mind s eye could not have seen what you were able to bring to life for us here. We were able to capture a feeling, I believe, which is truly something remarkable to accomplish. I beamed with pride hearing every single model lust over and compliment the garments as they slipped them on for our shoots, and that truly is apparent in the images we have. To my family and friends: My sisters, husband, children, and friends have suffered much neglect since the conception of this title, and they have done so with nothing but genuine support and encouragement! Success is the love of your friends and family. To Stackpole Books: You ve allowed me to infuse so much of our individual styles into this collection, and for that I thank you with all my heart! Peace + Love + Crochet Salena
