3 Introduction Thnk you for purchsing this emroidery mchine. IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Plese red these sfety instructions efore ttempting to use the mchine. DANGER - To reduce the risk of electric shock 1 Alwys unplug the mchine from the electricl outlet immeditely fter using, when clening, when mking ny user servicing djustments mentioned in this mnul, or if you re leving the mchine unttended. WARNING - To reduce the risk of urns, fire, electric shock, or injury to persons. 2 Alwys unplug the mchine from the electricl outlet when mking ny djustments mentioned in the instruction mnul. To unplug the mchine, switch the mchine to the symol O position to turn it off, then grsp the plug nd pull it out of the electricl outlet. Do not pull on the cord. Plug the mchine directly into the electricl outlet. Do not use n extension cord. Alwys unplug your mchine if the power is cut. 3 Electricl Hzrds: This mchine should e connected to n AC power source within the rnge indicted on the rting lel. Do not connect it to DC power source or inverter. If you re not sure wht kind of power source you hve, contct qulified electricin. This mchine is pproved for use in the country of purchse only. 4 Never operte this mchine if it hs dmged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it hs een dropped or dmged, or wter is spilled on the unit. Return the mchine to the nerest uthorized deler or service center for exmintion, repir, electricl or mechnicl djustment. While the mchine is stored or in use if you notice nything unusul, such s n odor, het, discolortion or deformtion, stop using the mchine immeditely nd unplug the power cord. When trnsporting the mchine, e sure to crry it y its hndle. Lifting the mchine y ny other prt my dmge the mchine or result in the mchine flling, which could cuse injuries. Do not use extension cords. Plug the mchine directly into the electricl outlet. Never drop or insert ny oject into ny opening. Do not operte where erosol (spry) products re eing used or where oxygen is eing dministered. Do not use the mchine ner het source, such s stove or iron; otherwise, the mchine, power cord or grment eing emroidered my ignite, resulting in fire or n electric shock. Do not use outdoors. 8 For longer service life: When storing this mchine, void direct sunlight nd high humidity loctions. Do not use or store the mchine ner spce heter, iron, hlogen lmp, or other hot ojects. Use only neutrl sops or detergents to clen the mchine. Benzene, thinner, nd scouring powders cn dmge the mchine, nd should never e used. In the event mlfunction occurs or djustment is required, first follow the trouleshooting tle in the ck of the opertion mnul to inspect nd djust the mchine yourself. 14 Opertion uttons The opertion uttons help you to esily perform vrious sic mchine opertions. c Strt/stop utton Press the strt/stop utton to strt or stop emroidering. The mchine emroiders t slow speed while the utton is pressed. When emroidering is stopped, the needle is lowered in the fric. The utton chnges color ccording to the mchine s opertion mode. Green: Red: Ornge: The mchine is redy to emroider or is emroidering. The mchine cn not emroider. The mchine is winding the oin thred, or the oin winder shft is moved to the right side. Needle position utton Press the needle position utton to rise or lower the needle. Be sure to rise the needle efore threding the needle. Pressing the utton twice sews one stitch. Thred cutter utton Press the thred cutter utton fter emroidering is stopped to cut oth the upper thred nd the oin threds. CAUTION Do not press the thred cutter utton fter the threds hve lredy een cut, otherwise the needle my rek, the threds my ecome tngled or dmge to the mchine my occur. Note Do not press the thred cutter utton if there is no fric under the emroidery foot or while the mchine is emroidering, otherwise dmge to the mchine my occur. Use scissors to cut specil thred such s metllic thred. 12

Touch the keys displyed on the LCD with your finger or touch pen to perform opertions. 19 Turning the Mchine On/Off This section explins how to turn the mchine on nd off. Power supply precutions 1 Be sure to oserve the following precutions concerning the power supply. WARNING Use only regulr household electricity for the power source. Using other power sources my result in fire, electric shock, or dmge to the mchine. Mke sure tht the plugs on the power cord re firmly inserted into the electricl outlet nd the power supply jck on the mchine. Otherwise, fire or electric shock my result. Do not insert the plug on the power cord into n electricl outlet tht is in poor condition. Turn off the min power nd remove the plug in the following circumstnces: When you re wy from the mchine After using the mchine When the power fils during use When the mchine does not operte correctly due to d connection or disconnection During electricl storms CAUTION Use only the power cord included with this mchine. Do not use extension cords or multi-plug dpters with mny other pplinces plugged in to them. Fire or electric shock my result. Do not touch the plug with wet hnds. Electric shock my result. When unplugging the mchine, lwys turn off the min power first. Alwys grsp the plug to remove it from the outlet. Pulling on the cord my dmge the cord, or led to fire or electric shock. Do not llow the power cord to e cut, dmged, modified, forcefully ent, pulled, twisted, or undled. Do not plce hevy ojects on the cord. Do not suject the cord to het. These things my dmge the cord nd cuse fire or electric shock. If the cord or plug is dmged, tke the mchine to your uthorized deler for repirs efore continuing use. Unplug the power cord if the mchine is not to e used for long period of time. Otherwise fire my result. Turning the Mchine On/Off 17

20 GETTING READY Turning on the mchine Memo Before turning on the mchine, e sure to ttch the emroidery unit to it. If the emroidery unit is not ttched, the mchine does not operte. (For detils, refer to Attching the Emroidery Unit (pge 19).) Prepre the included power supply cord. Mke sure tht the mchine is turned off (the min power switch is set to " "), nd then plug the power supply cord into the power supply jck on the right side of the mchine. Insert the plug of the power supply cord into household electricl outlet. Turning off the mchine When you hve finished using the mchine, turn it off. In ddition, efore trnsporting the mchine to nother loction, e sure to turn it off. Mke sure tht the mchine is completely stopped. Press the left side of the min power switch on the right side of the mchine to turn the mchine off (set it to " "). The light, LCD nd (Strt/stop utton) go off when the mchine is turned off. c Unplug the power supply cord from the electricl outlet. Grsp the plug when unplugging the power supply cord. c 1 Power supply jck Press the right side of the min power switch on the right side of the mchine to turn the mchine on (set it to " "). The light, LCD nd (Strt/stop utton) light up when the mchine is turned on. Memo When the mchine is turned on, the mchine will mke sound when it moves; this is not mlfunction. d Unplug the power cord from the power supply jck. Note If power outge occurs while the mchine is eing operted, turn off the mchine nd unplug the power supply cord. When restrting the mchine, follow the necessry procedure to correctly operte the mchine. (For U.S.A. only) This pplince hs polrized plug (one lde wider thn the other). To reduce the risk of electricl shock, this plug is intended to fit in polrized outlet only one wy. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contct qulified electricin to instll the proper outlet. Do not modify the plug in ny wy. 18

21 Attching the Emroidery Unit This section descries how to ttch the emroidery unit. Emroidery unit precutions CAUTION Do not move the mchine with the emroidery unit in plce. The emroidery unit my e dropped nd cuse injury. Keep your hnds nd other ojects wy from the emroidery crrige nd frme. Otherwise injury my result. Attching the emroidery unit Get the emroidery unit redy. 1 Note Do not touch the connector in the emroidery unit connector slot. The connector could e dmged, nd it my cuse mlfunctions. Do not lift up on the emroidery crrige, nd do not forcefully move it. It my cuse mlfunctions. Mke sure tht the mchine is turned off. Memo Alwys turn off the mchine efore ttching the emroidery unit. 22 GETTING READY Slide the emroidery unit onto the mchine rm. Push it in until it clicks nd stops. Crrige The emroidery unit is ttched. Note Mke sure tht there is no gp etween the emroidery unit nd the mchine, otherwise the emroidery pttern my not e sewn correctly. Be sure to fully insert the connector into the connection port. Do not push on the crrige when ttching the emroidery unit to the mchine, otherwise dmge to the emroidery unit my result. CAUTION Do not put your hnds or other ojects ner the crrige. It my cuse injury. Note If the mchine is initilized with hnds or ojects ner the crrige, the screen my return to the initil disply. After removing whtever is ner the crrige, turn the power on gin. The screen for selecting the emroidery pttern type is displyed. Turn on the mchine. c d The confirmtion messge is displyed. Be sure tht no ojects or hnds re ner the emroidery unit nd press. Memo For detils on the emroidery ptterns, refer to "Selecting Emroidery Ptterns" (pge 50). The crrige moves to its initil position. 20

23 Removing the emroidery unit Mke sure tht the mchine is completely stopped nd follow the instructions elow. Remove the emroidery frme. For detils on removing the emroidery frme, refer to "Removing the emroidery frme" (pge 48). Press, nd then press. d Hold the relese utton on the ottom left of the emroidery unit, nd slowly pull the emroidery unit to the left. 1 The emroidery crrige moves into position where it cn e sved. Turn off the mchine. c CAUTION Alwys turn off the mchine efore removing the emroidery unit. It my cuse mlfunctions if removed when the mchine is turned on. Relese utton The emroidery unit seprtes from the mchine. CAUTION Do not crry the emroidery unit y holding the crrige. It my cuse mlfunctions. Attching the Emroidery Unit 21

24 GETTING READY LCD (Liquid Crystl Disply) Opertion Selected emroidery pttern, settings nd messges re displyed on the LCD (liquid crystl disply) on the front of the mchine. Chnge the screen on the LCD using the keys on the right side of the LCD, nd mke opertions y directly touching the icons with your finger or touch pen. For detils, refer to "Opertion pnel" (pge 13). Viewing the LCD When the power is turned on, the LCD comes on. When you touch the LCD screen ccording to the messge displyed on the screen with your finger or touch pen, the following screen is displyed. Pttern type selection You cn select the pttern type from this screen. For detils, refer to "Emroidery pttern types" (pge 50). Moves the emroidery unit crrige to its storge position Press when removing the emroidery unit. For detils, refer to "Removing the emroidery unit" (pge 21). Memo Refer to "Error messges" (pge 86) for messges displyed on the LCD. 22

28 GETTING READY Prepring Items for Emroidering The following is necessry for emroidering. Fric Prepre the fric for emroidery. Prepre piece of fric little lrger thn the emroidery frme tht mtches the size of the pttern you wnt to emroider. Note Alwys use stilizer when emroidering projects, especilly when emroidering on lightweight or stretch frics. CAUTION Do not emroider frics tht re too thick. To check the fric thickness, ttch the emroidery frme to the emroidery unit, nd use (Needle position utton) to rise the needle. If there is spce etween the emroidery foot nd the fric, the fric cn e emroidered. If there is not spce, do not emroider the fric. Otherwise, the needle my rek, resulting in injury. Be creful when emroidering overlpping ptterns. The needle my not esily pierce the fric, cusing the needle to rek. Stilizer mteril (option) Attch stilizer mteril for emroidery to the fric to prevent poor qulity emroidery designs. Use wter solule sheet on thin mterils like orgndy nd frics with np like towels. For detils, refer to "Attching stilizer mteril to the fric" (pge 43). Emroidery thred (option) For the upper thred, use the emroidery thred or country thred. For the oin thred, use the emroidery oin thred. For detils, refer to "Optionl ccessories" (pge 9). Memo For good qulity emroidery designs e sure to use emroidery thred designed for emroidery mchines. 29 Prepring the Needle Before strting emroidering, check the needle nd replce it if necessry. Needle precutions 1 Be sure to oserve the following precutions concerning the hndling of the needle. Checking the needle Emroidering with ent needle is extremely dngerous since the needle my rek while the mchine is eing operted. Before using the needle, plce the flt side of the needle on flt surfce nd check tht the distnce etween the needle nd the flt surfce is even. Press (Needle position utton) once or twice to rise the needle. e Hold the needle with your left hnd, nd then use screwdriver to turn the needle clmp screw towrd you (counterclockwise) to remove the needle. While using your left hnd to hold the thred tht ws pssed through the oin-winding thred guide, use your right hnd to wind the end of the thred. Wind five or six times. Press l (Strt/stop utton) once. k CAUTION Be sure to pull the thred tightly nd wind it clockwise. If the thred is wound counterclockwise, the thred my wind round the oin winder shft. Pss the end of the thred through the guide slit in the oin winder set, nd then pull the thred to the right to cut it. Strt/stop utton The oin strts winding nd "Winding oin thred..." is displyed on the LCD screen. Note Do not get wy from the mchine while winding the oin. Mke sure the oin thred is eing wound correctly. If the oin thred is wound incorrectly, press (Strt/stop utton) immeditely to stop the oin winding. CAUTION Do not remove the oin winder set even if the thred ecome tngled under the oin winder set. It my result in injuries. Emroidery frme (medium) Ptterns with height of up to 10 cm (4 inches) nd width of up to 10 cm (4 inches) cn e emroidered. Loosen the emroidery frme djustment screw nd remove the inner nd outer frmes, plcing the outer frme on flt surfce. Seprte the inner nd outer frme y removing inner frme upwrd. Inner frme Outer frme c Adjustment screw Plce the fric with the stilizer mteril on top of the outer frme. Hve the right side of the cloth up. c Emroidery frme (smll) [option] Ptterns with height of up to 2 cm (1 inch) nd width of up to 6 cm (2-1/2 inches) cn e emroidered. See the explntion of threds elow. 2 Thred Upper thred Boin thred Use emroidery thred intended for use with this mchine. Other emroidery threds my not yield optimum results. Use emroidery oin thred intended for use with this mchine. For detils, refer to "Optionl ccessories" (pge 9). Memo If you use threds other thn those listed ove, the pttern my not turn out correctly. Boin cse; recommended for emroidering with 90 weight oin thred This oin cse is djusted to ccommodte 90 weight oin thred, when the mchine is purchsed. When progrmmed thred cutting is set, the thred is cut utomticlly fter reinforcement. In this cse, go to step j. CAUTION Use the emroidery frme tht mtches the size of the pttern eing emroidered. Otherwise, the emroidery frme my e hit y the emroidery foot nd cuse injury or needle rekge. Press i (Thred cutter utton) once. f After progressing 5-6 stitches, press (Strt/stop utton) to stop the mchine. Thred cutter utton The needle is rised nd the threds re cut. Rise the presser foot lever. j Presser foot lever Memo If the emroidery foot is not rised, the upper thred cnnot e replced. 60

63 Remove the upper thred. k l Note Be sure to rise the presser foot lever efore removing the upper thred. If you remove the upper thred with the emroidery foot lowered, it my cuse mlfunction. Set up emroidery thred for the next color, nd repet steps through h. When the lst color is emroidered, "Finished sewing." will pper on the disply. Press, nd the disply will return to the initil screen. Cut the excess thred. m Memo For the progrmmed thred cutting setting, refer to "Setting for emroidering" (pge 52). Appliquéing Prepre the se fric nd the ppliqué fric (ppliqué piece). Press (Settings key), nd set the thred color disply to NAME OF COLOR, so "APPLIQUE MATERIAL", "APPLIQUE POSITION" nd "APPLIQUE" re displyed on the screen. Select n ppliqué pttern. "APPLIQUE MATERIAL" is displyed on the screen. Apply iron-on stilizer to the ck of the ppliqué piece fric, nd stretch it on the emroidery frme. 2 c Lower the presser foot lever, nd press (Strt/stop utton). The cut-out for the ppliqué piece is sewn, nd the mchine stops. Cut-out line Appliqué piece fric "APPLIQUE POSITION" will e displyed on the screen. Emroidering 61

64 EMBROIDERY d Remove the fric from the emroidery frme, nd cut it out long the cut-out line. Cut crefully long the stitching nd remove the thred. Apply thin lyer of fric glue or spry h dhesive to the ck of the ppliqué piece, nd ttch it in the ppliqué position. If it is not cut right on the stitching, it will not e finished netly. i Lower the presser foot lever, nd press (Strt/stop utton). e Stretch the se fric on the emroidery frme. Set up the thred for ppliquéing. f Lower the presser foot lever, nd press g (Strt/stop utton). The position for the ppliqué is stitched, nd the mchine stops. The position for the ppliqué is stitched, nd the mchine stops. "APPLIQUE" will e displyed on the screen. For detils, refer to "Sving ptterns" (pge 76). Adjusting the upper thred tension It is very difficult to rip out emroidery designs if the thred tension is incorrect. To prevent dmge to the project fric, it is good ide to use scrp of the sme fric to check the djustment of the thred tension, etc. The upper thred tension is chnged using the thred tension dil. When doing mchine emroidery, the tension dil should e set somewhere etween 2 to 6. Right side of fric Wrong side of fric Upper thred is too tight The lower thred will e visile on the right side of fric. If this occurs, decrese the upper thred tension. Right side of fric Wrong side of fric Upper thred is too loose The upper thred hs slck. If this occurs, increse the upper thred tension. Right side of fric Wrong side of fric Note If the upper thred is not threded correctly or the oin is not instlled correctly, it my not e possile to set the correct thred tension. If the correct thred tension cnnot e chieved, rethred the upper thred nd insert the oin correctly. If the tension dil is set extremely low, the mchine my stop stitching during emroidering. 68 EMBROIDERY Adjusting the oin thred tension The oin cse instlled in this mchine cn e djusted, if necessry, to ccommodte the oin tension for emroidering. Using smll slotted screwdriver, turn the slottedhed (-) screw to djust the oin cse tension. 1 2 Do not turn phillips screw (+). Adjust with screwdriver (smll). Correct thred tension The thred tension is correct when upper thred slightly ppers on the wrong side of fric. Right side of fric Wrong side of fric Boin thred is too tight Upper thred on the right side of fric seems to e lifting/looping nd oin thred is not seen on the wrong side of fric. CAUTION When djusting the oin cse, e sure to remove the oin from the oin cse. DO NOT djust the position of the Phillips (+) screw on the oin cse s this my result in dmge to the oin cse, rendering it unusle. If the slotted-hed screw (-) is difficult to turn, do not use force. Turning the screw too much or providing force in either (rottionl) direction my cuse dmge to the oin cse. Should dmge occur, the oin cse my not mintin proper tension. If this occurs, turn the slotted-hed screw (-) counterclockwise eing creful not to over-loosen the screw, pproximtely degrees to decrese oin tension. 66

69 Connecting chrcter ptterns If the chrcter pttern is too long to fit in the emroidery frme, follow the steps elow. Exmple: Connecting "ABC" with "DEF" f Press to turn it to. Enter "ABC" nd press. Press to turn off the progrmmed thred cutting ( ). The stitching strting point is set to lower left of the design. Lower the emroidery foot, nd then press g (Strt/stop switch) to egin emroidering. When emroidering is finished, trim the thred h leving the end of the thred longer thn usul. Then reset the fric in the emroidery frme, in position where you cn emroider "DEF". 2 Press c (Bck key). 71 Thred runs out prtwy through design When the upper thred or the oin thred runs out while emroidering, the mchine stops. Move the needle ck out 10 stitches nd resume emroidering. Memo When the oin thred runs out, cut the threds nd remove the emroidery frme efore replcing the oin thred. Set the upper thred or oin thred. Press. Stopping while emroidering If the emroidery is stopped efore it is complete, check the current needle count nd lyout efore turning off the mchine. Memo When the mchine is turned off, the emroidery size nd lyout return to the originl setting. If you hve chnged the lyout, you need to djust it gin. Press (Strt/stop utton) to stop the mchine. Check the current needle count on the screen nd mke note of it. 2 Memo If the needle count is not displyed, disply the needle count on the screen. For detils, refer to "Stopping while emroidering" (pge 69). c Press. If the needle count is not displyed, press (Settings key), nd then use to disply the following screen. Press to return to the previous screen. Press (Bck one stitch) to move the d needle ck out 10 stitches. (Forwrd one stitch) increses the stitch numer. Press c (Emroidery key). Using dt other thn tht sved using one of our emroidery softwre progrms or sewing mchines my cuse the emroidery mchine to mlfunction. Precutions on Using the Computer To Crete nd Sve Dt If folder or file nme for emroidery dt cnnot e identified, for exmple, ecuse the nme contins specil chrcters, the folder or file will not e displyed. If this occurs, chnge its nme. We recommend using the 26 letters of the lphet (uppercse nd lowercse), the numers 0 through 9, -, nd _..pes files sved with the numer of stitches, the numer of colors nd the numer of comined ptterns exceeding the specified limits cnnot e displyed. Use one of our emroidery softwre progrms to edit the emroidery pttern so tht it meets the required specifictions. Even if the emroidery unit is not ttched, the mchine will recognize emroidery dt.
