12 Microsoft sells HoloLens AR headset for $3,000 Microsoft s HoloLens is now available to anyone in the US and Canada who wants to pay $3,000 for the privilege. The AR headset is still a developer edition device, which explains the high price. When Microsoft is ready for a full retail launch, the price will likely be much lower. The company announced in a blog post that the HoloLens is now available to all developers and business customers in these two countries and that each buyer could purchase up to five devices. The gadget requires no application, so anyone can theoretically order a device. The high price is meant as a deterrent against those who are not serious about developing software for the HoloLens. At $3,000, Microsoft s AR headset comes in double the price of Google Glass when it became open to everyone. Google Glass, of course, failed to take off, and Google started focusing on other areas. AR Stories on industry-shaping moves by leading brands technology is young and underdeveloped, but it is expected to play a big role in the future of consumer tech products along with virtual reality. AR has been getting a lot of attention recently thanks to the success of Pokémon Go, a smartphone game based on the famous Nintendo franchise. The game was developed by Niantic, which started as a mapping company under Google, and it allows people to walk around finding Pokémon creatures using GPS and the phone s camera. The popularity of the game has made people realize there is potentially a lot of money in AR, especially in the gaming sector. Since Microsoft also created the XBox and is invested in the gaming industry, utilizing the HoloLens for gaming makes sense. To become a mainstream gaming product, however, AR headsets will have to cost a lot less than $3,000. Acer bets future on commercial VR sector Acer has made a name for itself by undercutting its competition in PCs. It has been especially successful in the Chromebook market, in which consumers look for a lot of value while spending relatively little money. While this approach has proven good for building the brand, it is not very profitable. Now, Acer is betting its future on VR, according to Bloomberg. CEO Jason Chen believes Acer is well-positioned to become popular for high-end VR headsets. The company, however, is not targeting the consumer market. In fact, Acer wants to build headsets that sell for much more than what Oculus Rift and Taiwan rival HTC offer currently. Bloomberg reported that Acer is looking at prices in the four-digit range. The maker will do this by targeting businesses such as IMAX theaters and theme parks. Acer is already working with video game company Starbreeze on a headset called StarVR. The device is set to debut in a Los Angeles IMAX experience center this year. Chen told Bloomberg the company is discussing future partnerships with other groups but did not elaborate. As bets go, banking on the commercial sector tends to pay off. The drone industry is undergoing a similar shift, with the drone hobbyist market dominated largely by Shenzhen-based DJI. IDC projects that a fifth of all VR headsets sold in 2020 will be purchased by businesses. VR headsets are not yet as common as drones. The Oculus Rift has been the most anticipated VR headset for a few years and it only went on sale this year. HTC followed up quickly by announcing the Vive headset. Both of these devices are meant for consumers, selling for $599 and $799 respectively. Meanwhile, Google is betting the future of VR on mobile. It has inspired many copycat products of its Google Cardboard headset and baked VR functionality into the next version of Android with Daydream. When big companies are done duking it out in the consumer sector for brand recognition in VR headsets, though, they will likely turn their sights onto the commercial sector. From there, competition will heat up. Acer is hoping that starting now will give it a sustainable first-mover advantage. 12 More exclusive news: GlobalSources.com/MobileElectronics
13 VR headsets have a bright future at theme parks One of the big promises for virtual reality is in the commercial market. Operators of movie theaters and theme parks have already been expressing keen interest in using VR headsets to bring new experiences to their consumers, and companies such as Acer are obliging. For theme parks, one big attraction of VR headsets is using the technology to give new life to old roller coaster rides. The Wall Street Journal reported recently that theme park companies such as Six Flags are enthusiastic about VR technology because it allows them to repackage old rides digitally, without the cost of building or refurbishing a giant physical structure. The economic gains of using VR instead of building more roller coasters are clear. However, there are consequences to arriving late to a popular technology. It is too early to tell exactly how the VR market will transform, but a lot of large, influential technology companies such as Facebook and Google are betting that the market will be big. While popular theme parks, including Six Flags, might be able to coast a little bit on their reputation and branded rides, the VR market opens up the potential for rivals who are not even in the theme park business. This makes staying on top of the new technology vital. So far, VR headsets are not widely available in theme parks, although efforts to use the technology are still largely in early stages. There are more than 3,000 roller coasters globally, but fewer than 25 are using VR equipment, according to the WSJ. Nevertheless, theme parks seem to be doing quite well for themselves. Revenue reached about $32 billion in 2015, a 40 percent increase since A lot of VR innovation is coming out of China these days. At least one estimate has China s market reaching $8 billion by There are now VR attractions readily available in large cities in the country, especially in Shenzhen, where much of the hardware is made, especially mobile VR headsets. At some of these VR stations, about 100 yuan, or $15, gets a person three rides on a fake roller coaster. Xiaomi forays into VR market with $0.15 mobile headset Xiaomi seems to be spreading itself wide to make sure that whatever the next big thing is, to borrow a phrase, it has already carved a space out for itself in that market. The company s latest endeavor is a mobile virtual reality headset. In typical Xiaomi style, the China maker is offering the product at a great price: 1 yuan, or about $0.15. The Mi VR Play, however, is only in beta for now. This is likely not the price it will have when the device gets a wider release. Currently, users have to sign up to be part of the beta. The first round of sign-ups finished within hours of the launch when 1 million people registered. Xiaomi, however, will only be sending its headset to a portion of those. Like other mobile VR headsets, there is not much to be said for Xiaomi s product. The technology that matters is mostly in a user s phone. Xiaomi said the Mi VR Play will fit phones with screen sizes from 4.7 to 5.7in. The main selling point for Xiaomi s mobile VR headset over the competition seems to be comfort. The exterior of the device is wrapped in spandex to make it smooth and comfortable to wear. The front also contains two openings that allow users to adjust the phone to make sure it is sitting properly inside. Xiaomi is likewise releasing an app for the headset that will have China VR content for users to view. Many big companies seem certain that the VR market will have big rewards in the future, but there are two different strategies at the moment. Facebook and HTC, among others, believe that the impressive graphics and gameplay offered by PC-connected VR headsets will allow them to capture consumers. Google believes that for VR to achieve massive scale, it will have to be based on mobile devices. This is why Google is integrating VR features into its next version of Android. This strategy also makes sense in China, where mobile devices are a much more prominent part of people s lives than PCs. Xiaomi manufactures smartphones, so it makes sense for the company such as ZTE to focus its efforts on mobile VR. Other China suppliers seem willing to follow Google s vision of VR as well.
