1 2018 WITSA Global ICT Excellence Awards Remote Immersive Experience Platform SECTOR: SUSTAINABLE GROWTH AWARD Remote Immersive Experience Platform, developed by Institute for Information Industry, leverages VR (Virtual Reality) technology as its base infrastructure and implementation. By combining remote VR design tools (Unity), VR devices (HTC Vive) and remote contents, we achieve immersive learning experience in an economic, energy-saving way. Without being onsite, one can get immersive learning experience in a single platform, this saves both energy and traffic cost. We select east Taitung county in Taiwan as our experiment site, which is in shortage of digital learning resources and with inconvenient traffic. This platform is widely used with school s off-campus teaching program, pre-travel experiencing of the travel spot, and remote learning adapted by local governmental and non-governmental organizations in Taitung. YOUR NOMINEE(S): Institute for Information Industry (III) is the Driving Force of Taiwan s Information Technology Industry Transformation. ( III was incorporated in 1979, through the joint efforts of public and private sectors, to support the development of information industry as well as information applications of each area in Taiwan. As one of the world s leading ICT innovators, III has about 1,800 dedicated professionals, more 1

2 than 75% of them have a Master s degree or PhD, and two thirds of them are focusing on technology research and development. REASONS FOR NOMINATION: The Remote Immersive Experience Platform is the first platform in Taiwan to maximize VR potential to bring remote things/events/scenes back to one site, thus could greatly reduce energy consumption and carbon emission while traveling to the real spot. This platform has been widely used in tourism and education, which is the main industry and service in our selected implementation spot, Taitung, Taiwan. 3 The Remote Immersive Experience Platform utilizes below Characteristics of VR technology: 1. Low power consumption hardware. 2. Remote update of the content. 3. One-site immersive experience, greatly reduces carbon emission during travel. 4. Invoke consciousness of local sustainable growth through educational VR contents Fig 2. The user can access distant immersive experiences in one site As Fig.3 shown below, the boy is enjoying immersive canoe boating experience in his learning room. The Fig.4 shows what he sees inside his VR HMD. This is a faraway boating place in a small island Orchid Island in Taitung county, which could be experienced in his school in Taitung 3

4 downtown. Because Taitung county expanses large area, one can save his travel time to experience the VR on one site first, and to determine whether to go deeply to the spot for the next time, thus greatly reduces environmental impact and carbon emission caused by distant travel. Here we adapt the HTC VR technology Vive, which has lighthouse technology to precisely detect the user s moving to bring highly-interactive experience in one single scene. For pre-processing, we combine both VR 360 recorder (Garmin VIRB) and modeling tools (Maya) to build the scene. The VR 360 environment provides realistic rendering and the 3D modeling objects provide interactive experiences. In software layer, we develop with game engine Unity to build and represent the original scene, which can be compatible to many devices, include PC (Vive), mobile phone (Android / ios) and other platforms. 4

8 The platform contains following experiences, with different genres: Experiences 1.Green Island diving experience Screenshots 2.Orchid Island boating experience 3.Pre-history museum guiding experience 4.Fuli tourist guiding experience 5.Local court judging experience Some contents are made to invoke local consciousness of sustainable environment, like introducing a rare fish Cheilinus undulatus in Green Island Diving experience to prevent overkill, and help new resident in Taiwan(mainly from Vietnam) to experience the court judgement process in 8

9 Local court judging experience To spread our solution all over the Taitung county, we cooperate with both governmental and non-governmental organizations, school volunteers, and local communities. 13 SUMMARY Considering that road transport is responsible for about 16% of man-made CO2 emissions, the Remote Immersive Experience Platform leverages VR potential of bringing remote experience/scenes/events to one site, thus greatly reduce carbon emission during travel. This platform is made with cross-platform hardware support (include mobile VR cardboard and HTC Vive), which could be widely used in many situations.
