It must be understood by the operator that COMMON SENSE AND CAUTION ARE FACTORS WHICH CANNOT BE BUILT INTO THIS PRODUCT, BUT MUST BE SUPPLIED BY THE OPERATOR. The Operator PLEASE REMEMBER: Do not operate the product if under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Read warning labels on prescriptions to determine if your judgment/reflexes might be impaired. 3 Work Area TO AVOID RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY, EQUIPMENT DAMAGE, FIRE AND SHOCK, MAKE SURE YOUR WORK AREA IS: Free of damp, wet or rainy conditions. Free of flammable gasses or liquids. Free of children (never let them handle tools or machinery). Well-lit. Clean and uncluttered. Well-ventilated. Before Operating Before using any tool, any part that appears damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Before operating your Blaster Cabinet check for damaged parts. You should also make sure all clamps, locks and bolts are tight. Give the Blaster Cabinet a test run. If it makes an unfamiliar noise or vibrates irregularly, turn it off, unplug it and have the problem corrected by a qualified technician. Make certain to turn off and unplug the Blaster Cabinet when doing any maintenance. This piece of equipment should always be turned off and unplugged when not in use. Wear leather gloves and long sleeves when unloading or moving cabinet. NOTE: Performance of this tool may vary depending on variations in local line voltage. Extension cord usage may also affect tool performance. Groundage/Voltage Warning Common household current is volts. As long as the outlet used with the Light Kit is rated from V there will be no complications using it with household receptacles. Plug the tool into a V properly grounded outlet protected by a 15-amp, dual element time delay or circuit breaker. NEVER try to plug a V tool into a V circuit or serious complications and possible injury to the operator may occur. The plugs have different shapes to prevent this. This tool has a three-prong plug. The third (round) prong is the ground. Cutting off the ground will result in a safety hazard and void the warranty. If the outlet you are planning to use is the two-prong type, do not remove or alter the grounding prong in any manner. Use an adapter and always connect the grounding lug to a known grounding source. It is recommended that you have a qualified electrician replace the two-prong outlet with a properly grounded threeprong outlet. #39170 Page 3
4 Extension Cords Your tool has a three-prong plug, therefore you must use a three-prong extension cord. Only use rounded jacket extension cords listed by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Improper use of extension cords may cause inefficient operation of your tool which can result in overheating. Be sure your extension cord is rated to allow sufficient current flow to the motor. If you are using the tool outdoors, use an extension cord rated for outdoor use (signified by WA on the jacket). The extension cord must have a minimum wire size depending on the amperage of the tool and the length of the extension cord. This size is determined by its AWG (American Wire Gauge) rating. The smaller the gauge, the greater the cable s capacity. The amount of cords used does not matter: Total length determines the minimum AWG rating. Every cord must meet the AWG rating. Use the chart below to determine what AWG rating is required for your situation. Cord length is rated in feet. Harbor Freight Tools can supply UL listed and outdoor rated cords in multiple AWG ratings if needed. AWG RATING CHART CORD LENGTH AMPS AWG AWG AWG AWG AWG AWG AWG AWG DO NOT MODIFY YOUR PLUG IN ANY WAY. IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT, CALL A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN. Assembly Your Blast Cabinet comes unassembled. It is important that your read the entire manual to become familiar with the unit BEFORE you use the Cabinet. Before assembling your Blast Cabinet, be sure that you have all parts described in the Parts List on page 7. Step 1) Step 2) Step 3) Step 4) If Sand Input Pipe (52) is not secured in place, fasten it into place using the appropriate screws, washers and nuts. The Input Pipe is to be placed inside of the Funnel (58) with the long end facing down toward the narrow end of the Funnel. Place the Net (53) on your work bench or table. Peel off paper backing from 1" wide adhesive foam gasket and apply this to the lip of the Net. Trim the Gasket as necessary. Punch holes in the gasket for the bolts to fit through. Lay out the cabinet wherever it is easiest to work on. Attach Legs (62) to the cabinet (see diagram 1) by inserting bolts (M6x12) through washer, leg and washer and nut. Use lock washers and tighten. Repeat until all four legs are attached. Each leg comes with a Molding (63) which is attached to the bottom of the leg. Push each molding into place on the foot of each leg. Now that the legs are attached, stand the cabinet upright. Place the Net (53) onto the Funnel (58). Using 4 M6x20 bolts, attach the Funnel with Net to the Cabinet. Insert the bolts through the washers, through the holes in the Funnel, the Net and into the cabinet. Tighten down all nuts and bolts. Insert M6 x 12 Bolts through washers (you will need 8 of each) and into the leg and through the shelf (59). Tighten bolts until assembly is secure and solid. #39170 Page 4
5 Attaching the Fluorescent Light Make certain power is off and Blast Cabinet is unplugged prior to any installation. See main Assembly Diagram (page 8) and Light Assembly Diagram for attaching Light. Step 1) Step 2) Step 3) Connect the Clamps (47) to the Back Board of the Cabinet. Insert the Fluorescent Light into the clamps. The wiring for the Light (23) will go through the upper left side of the Cabinet (see Assembly diagram). The red and black wires are then connected to the Transformer (22). Plug should be attached to the switch box/transformer. Attach the Transformer (22) to the Cabinet with 2 screws. Replacing the Bulb Disconnect and unplug the Light and attached wiring from the Transformer/Switch box. Pull the Light out of the Clamps and remove from the Cabinet. Replace with a new bulb. 6 Close and latch the door at all times prior to operating the cabinet. Clean up all spills; sand particles are very slippery. When using your Blasting Cabinet, a 5 HP compressor is recommended. A fine grade of abrasive is recommended to prevent clogging. Step 1) Step 2) Step 3) Step 4) Step 5) Step 6) Step 7) WARNING: Step 8) Step 9) Note: Select the appropriate nozzle for your needs. The Sand Input Hose (50) feeds from the Sand Input Pipe (52-Assembly step 1) and is attached to the front of the Gun (48). The Air Input (49) is attached to the base of the Gun. This part of the Gun is fitted with 1/4" threads which will fit most air hoses. At the front right side of the Cabinet is the opening Grommet (42), for the air input hose from your compressor. Connect your hose to the bottom handle of the Gun with either a quick connect fitting or by use of a hose clamp, and a barb fitting on the Gun. Set the compressor s pressure regulator to PSI. Do not set the regulator above the Maximum PSI. Open the door and place the material you are working with in the center of the Cabinet. Close latches SECURELY. Place your hands into the Rubber Gloves (46) inside the Cabinet. Make certain your fingers are in the proper positions and that you can easily move your hands and grip things. Grip the Gun with one hand. Point the Nozzle at the bottom of the Cabinet and operate the gun for a moment to make certain everything is working correctly. If leaking is detected, disconnect the air hose and have it repaired before using. Hold the material you are working with in your other hand. Position your fingers so that the Rubber Glove is not in the way of the area you are blasting. You may have to reposition your fingers many different times during the blasting to ensure that you have blasted every area of your material. Press the trigger of the Gun to begin blasting. Aim the nozzle directly at the surface of the material. Bring the nozzle to within 2 inches of the material if necessary. Move the gun in a side-to-side or circular motion, always making sure that your fingers are not in the way. Do not aim the nozzle at your fingers, the Rubber Gloves or the Light. To check on the progress of your blasting, remove your hand from the gun first and pull your hand from the glove. Remove your other hand. Once gun is OFF, open the door and inspect your material. If necessary to continue blasting, follow previous steps as necessary. Once completed, remove your hands from the gloves and shut off the compressor. Open the door and remove your material. Your Blaster Cabinet has fitting for your shop vacuum in order to remove any dust created by blasting. When using the vacuum, a paper filter should be placed over the standard filter. IF THERE IS ANY QUESTION ABOUT A CONDITION BEING SAFE OR UNSAFE, DO NOT OPERATE THE TOOL. #39170 REV 02/05 Page 6
7 Replacing Nozzles Note: When replacing a Nozzle (5A), always make sure the Air Jet (8) in place is compatible with the desired Nozzle. The smaller of the two Air Jets should be used with the two smaller Nozzles (3/16 and 13/64 ). The larger Air Jet should be used with the two larger Nozzles (15/64 and 17/ 64 ). Instructions for changing Nozzles and Air Jets: 1. After selecting the appropriate Nozzle, use the Hex Key Wrench to loosen the front Hex Set Screw on the Gun (48). 2. Remove the installed Nozzle, and insert the new Nozzle, round end first, into the Gun assembly. Tighten the Hex Set Screw. 3. To replace the Air Jet, use the Hex Key Wrench to loosen the rear Hex Set Screw on the Gun. Pull away this section of the Gun to reveal the Air Jet. Front Hex Set Screw Rear Hex Set Screw 4. Remove the installed Air Jet, and install the correct size replacement Air Jet (wide, round end first). Replace the removed section of the Gun and tighten the rear Hex Set Screw.
