Additional materials Numeracy Level Introduction You may see fractions in newspapers, on adverts and sale signs, or used with weights and measures. You need to be able to read and understand them, and sometimes compare them so you know what is more or less. You can also get fractions when you do division, so you need to understand them to make sense of your answers. This activity looks at fractions. You will learn: l how to order and compare common fractions l how to order and compare mixed numbers. Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.

Additional materials Numeracy Level What is a fraction? If you divide a whole number by a larger whole number, the answer is a fraction. If you do the division on a calculator, the answer is a decimal fraction. Example: = Practice = 0. Fill in the gaps in the table. Use a calculator to work out the decimal fraction. division fraction decimal Practice a. Draw an arrow to place the fractions,,, 8, on this number line. Label each one b. Which is the smallest fraction? c. Which is the largest fraction? d. What fraction lies between 8 and? e. What two fractions lie between and 8? Which fraction is the larger of the two? Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.

Additional materials Numeracy Level A slice of pizza Each of these pizzas is cut into quarters. Is a slice of the small pizza the same size as a slice of the large pizza? No, you can see that a quarter of the small pizza is smaller than a quarter of the large pizza. These two pizzas are the same size. Each pizza is cut into eighths. Is a slice of the first pizza the same size as a slice of the second pizza? Yes, because the whole pizzas are the same size, the size of one eighth is the same. When a fraction is used to describe a part of a whole, as in the examples above, it is a proportion. A proportion is not a fixed size it depends on the size of the whole. So a quarter of one shape is only the same size as a quarter of a second shape if the whole shapes are the same size. Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.

Additional materials Numeracy Level More than one part This pizza is cut into fifths. One person eats two-fifths, another eats three-fifths. Who eats the most? You can see from the picture that of the pizza is more than of the pizza. The person who eats three-fifths eats the most. Practice These shapes are all the same size. What fraction of each shape is shaded? a. b. c. d. e. Write these fractions in order of size, starting with the smallest. When the bottom numbers (denominators) of fractions are the same, you can use the top numbers (numerators) to order and compare them. Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.

Additional materials Numeracy Level Equivalent fractions You share a pizza with a friend. You can cut it into halves and eat one half each. You can cut it into quarters and eat two quarters each. Or you can cut it into eighths and eat four eighths each. 8 The outcome is the same: you ve both eaten half of the pizza., and 8 are equivalent fractions. They mean the same amount. Practice Complete these patterns of equivalent fractions. a. 6 8 b c d. 6 9 e Which is bigger, or?... Which is bigger, or?... Which is bigger, or?... When the bottom numbers (denominators) of fractions are different, you need to use equivalent fractions to compare them. Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.

Additional materials Numeracy Level Practice Circle the equivalent fractions in each set. a. b. c. 6 d. e. 6 8 Which is bigger, or? Which is bigger, 7 or? Which is bigger, or? Which is bigger, or? Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.

Additional materials Numeracy Level Mixed numbers Four friends buy a 6 kg bag of rice and share it equally between them. How much do they get each? 6 = 6 = kg is a mixed number. It is made up of a whole number and a fraction. To compare the size of mixed numbers: l compare the whole numbers l if the whole numbers are the same, compare the fractions. Example Which is heavier: kg, kg or kg? is the larger whole number, but there are two of them. Compare and. is bigger than, so is bigger than. kg is the heaviest weight. Practice 6 a. Which is heavier, kg or kg? b. Which is heavier, kg or kg? c. A signpost in the centre of town shows the Cathedral is mile away, and the museum is miles. Which is closest? d. A signpost in the centre of the centre of town shows: Station University Hospital miles miles mile Which place is furthest away? e. Put these numbers in order of size, starting with the smallest. f. Put these numbers in order of size, starting with the smallest. 7 Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.

Additional materials Numeracy Level Check your skills You order a slice of pizza. The slice is ¼ of a whole pizza, but you can choose one of three sizes of pizza. Which slice is the biggest? A. ¼ small pizza B. ¼ medium pizza C. ¼ large pizza D. all the same Which is the smallest fraction? A. B. C. D. 8 These are the times taken by four people to run a marathon. Which is the fastest time? A. hours B. hours C. hours D. hours Which of these distances is the longest? A. mile B. mile C. mile D. mile Which is the largest fraction? A. B. C. D. Turn to page 9 to check your answers. Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.

Additional materials Numeracy Level Answers Practice division fraction decimal Practice b. is the smallest fraction c. is the largest fraction d. 9 e. 6 and 7. 6 is the largest Practice a. b. c. d. e. Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.

Additional materials Numeracy Level Answers Practice a. 6 8 b c d. 6 9 e Practice a., b., c., 6 d., 8 e., 7 they re the same Practice 6 a. kg b. kg c. Cathedral miles d. University miles e f Check your skills C D B A C Copyright Tribal Education Limited 007 N/L.
