4 PREFACE This Standard was prepared by the Association s Committee on Structural Steel to supersede AS , Steel Wire for Tendons in Prestressed Concrete (Metric Units). This Standard differs from the previous edition as follows: (a) The introduction of the Referenced Documents clause. (b) In the definitions, the terms calculated mass per metre and nominal diameter of indented wire are introduced, but the term patented is excluded. (c) The term yield strength is introduced in lieu of proof stress. (d) The marking (identification) requirements are revised. (e) Some editorial variations in accordance with current SAA style have also been introduced. Test methods are now in appendices. 5 3 AS STANDARDS ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA Australian Standard STEEL WIRE FOR TENDONS IN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE 1SCOPE.This Standard specifies the requirements for hard-drawn, high-tensile steel wire intended for the prestressing of concrete. The Standard provides for the following wire types: (a) As-drawn condition round wire only. (b) Stress-relieved condition either round wire or round wire deformed by indenting or crimping, and stress-relieved to achieve either normal relaxation or low relaxation, as desired. NOTE: Guidelines to purchasers on requirements that should be specified by the purchaser and those that should be agreed at the time of enquiry or order are given in Appendix A. 2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS. The following Standards are referred to in this Standard: AS 1391 Methods for Tensile Testing of Metals. AS 1545 Methods for the Calibration and Grading of Extensometers. AS 2193 Methods for Calibration and Grading of Force-measuring Systems of Testing Machines. AS Methods for Bend and Related Testing of Metals Part 4: Wire. AS 2706 Numerical Values Rounding and Interpretation of Limiting Values. 3 DEFINITIONS. For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions below apply. 3.1 Calculated mass per metre the mass per metre calculated from the wire size on the basis of the density of steel being 7850 kg/m Coil one continuous length of finished wire wound in close-packed rings. 3.3 Nominal diameter of indented wire the diameter of round wire having the same nominal cross-sectional area as that of the indented wire. NOTE: The cross-sectional area of indented wire is calculated from mass/length measurements (see Clause 3.1). 3.4 Lot quantity of finished wire manufactured under essentially the same conditions and at essentially the same time. A consignment or shipment may consist of one or more lots, or parts thereof. 3.5 Relaxation loss of load, on a test piece that is being maintained at constant length and constant temperature. 4 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. On check analysis, the steel shall have not more than percent of sulphur and not more than percent of phosphorus. NOTE: No other limitations are given for the composition of the steel. The tensile strength and other requirements imply that the wire will be manufactured from a steel of suitable composition. 5 WIRE MANUFACTURE. 5.1 General. All wire types shall be hard-drawn from hot-rolled, high-carbon steel rod which has been treated to make it suitable for drawing. 5.2 As-drawn wire. Hard-drawn round wire in the as-drawn condition shall be supplied without further treatment and shall be manufactured in ordinary mill coils. 5.3 Stress-relieved wire. Hard-drawn round wire to be supplied in the stress-relieved condition shall be straightened and, where appropriate, deformed by indenting or crimping, and then stress-relieved by continuous heat treatment. Following the stress-relieving heat treatment the wire shall be reformed into large diameter coils in accordance with Clause WELDS.The finished wire shall not contain any welds. 7 QUALITY OF FINISHED WIRE. The finished wire shall have been manufactured to the specified dimensions and shall be sound and free from harmful defects such as splits, surface flaws, and piping. The wire shall not carry on its surface any lubricant, oil or other matter likely to impair its adhesion to concrete or cement grout, (see Appendix A, Paragraph A2(f)). NOTE: As-drawn wire normally carries a residual film of wire-drawing lubricant which may impair bond characteristics. Light surface rusting is permissible, provided that no pitting is visible to the naked eye. Stress-relieved wire, when being uncoiled, shall comply with the straightness requirements of Clause 9.1. As-drawn wire is not intended to pay out straight from the coils. NOTE: Wire used for button-heading should be of suitable quality. Button-head splitting should not be considered a cause for rejection, if the button anchorage is capable of allowing development of at least the specified minimum tensile strength of the wire. 8 DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES. 8.1 Tolerance on diameter of round wire. The tolerance on the nominal diameter of round wire shall be as given in Table 1.
