Shahauna: Hiring has been increasing since Q The oil sands are growing and will continue to be a major source of new energy for the foreseeable future. With innovations in drilling technology, the industry as a whole is increasing its production base in North America. The current instability in the Middle East has positioned Canada as a safe and politically stable country to invest in. With this, and the ensuing capital investments, we are seeing continued growth in the Energy sector. The result is that hiring in the Energy sector continues to be on the rise, which has a domino effect in all other sectors. James: This sector is expanding and this is creating opportunities. Most of these are at the junior or middle management levels. At more senior levels, experienced project directors and managers are being particularly sought after. The energy sector has held up very strongly in terms of recruiting even through the economic downturn of the last few years. Iain: The energy sector has held up very strongly in terms of recruiting even through the economic downturn of the last few years. The fundamental drivers of the segment are strong, picking up the impetus of a commodities supercycle. Whereas large oil and gas companies such as BP and Shell are downsizing, smaller independent companies such as Hess and BG and National Oil Companies such as Saudi Aramco are growing. The companies serving the sector (oilfield services, EPC etc) have never had fuller order books and are recruiting strongly. In the utilities sector, the large players (such as EDF, RWE and EON) are consolidating and the massive global rush towards recruiting in nuclear that we have seen may tail off

3 2 with recent events in Japan. The previously active renewable energy recruitment market has dropped off significantly with higher oil prices and governments deciding to spend scarce capital elsewhere. John: Currently renewable energy is the most active in hiring. Conventional power generation, which is typically comprised of gas and coal, is slow. There are always some gas-fired power plants being financed and constructed but the activity is a fraction of what it looked like in the past. Clearly the recession which resulted in a 10-20% drop in power demand two years ago did not help. I think the most active segments today are solar, smart grid, energy storage, energy management and wind (roughly in that order). John Ryan BlueSteps: What do you think is on the horizon for the rest of 2011? Shahauna: We see continued growth in all sectors, with primary growth in both oil and gas as well as alternative/renewable Energy sectors. There are numerous projects in oil, gas, LNG, coal, power generation and renewable energy within the region. James Allen James: This sector should continue to expand in 2011 and beyond which will create opportunities for people. There are numerous projects in oil, gas, LNG, coal, power generation and renewable energy within the region. This is being driven by growth within Asia Pacific, particularly in China and India. Iain: The fundamentals of the energy sector are strong we will need energy sources of various sorts if the existing standards of living of the developed world are to be maintained and the standards of the developing world are to be raised. Thus recruitment levels should remain strong, particularly when the ageing demographics of the Western world and of the energy sector require significant replacement hiring. However, it is hard to predict the effects of events such as the nuclear disaster in Japan on recruitment levels. For some guidance, it may be worth considering what has happened after the Macondo well explosion in the Gulf of Mexico: initial moratorium on deep water drilling, flight to safety and quality, resumed activities with a greater focus on safety. John: I believe that renewable energy will get an inadvertent boost from the nuclear crisis in Japan. Germany took a number of nuclear power plants offline as a precautionary measure and that industry as a whole is in turmoil. Solar energy will continue to march forward and do well this year since that industry is working on not only utility-scale power projects but also distributed generation, commercial, rooftop, and smaller systems including residential. The cost of PV panels continues to drop and some industry consultants believe that solar PV will achieve cost parity with conventional power generation in five to six years. Wind is still beset with the difficulty of structuring profitable and sensible power purchase agreements, which has led to the commissioning of some merchant wind

4 3 farms by some of the big players. Energy storage and energy management will be strong sectors to provide balance for the year. Biofuels which I have not mentioned before might benefit from rising fuel prices. BlueSteps: How can a candidate best present him/herself to get noticed in today's marketplace? Shahauna: We always look for clearly defined results in each role they have performed. Candidates who are able to clearly articulate their career goals and demonstrate how their goals align to new opportunities in a convincing manner are easily noticed. Candidates who are able to clearly articulate their career goals are easily noticed. Shahauna Siddiqui James: A person gets noticed primarily because of their achievements. A future employer (or search consultant) is interested in what people have done and how successful they have been. Presenting this information in a way that is easy to understand is the key. "Candidates should always seek to be on the radar of the specialist Partners that cover their market it is important to know who the leading search firms/partners are for their sector. Iain: The best way to get noticed in today s market place is to not only do a great job, but to be known for doing a great job. Thus both internal and external networking will ensure that the work that you do is seen by others. In terms of being known to the Search/Head-Hunting community, candidates should always seek to be on the radar of the specialist Partners that cover their market. Thus for candidates operating in the energy sector it is important to know who the leading search firms/partners are for their sector. For example, Korn/Ferry has the largest and most effective Global Energy Practice of all the senior search firms with specialist Partners in Calgary, Houston, London, Dubai, Moscow, Singapore and Sydney. John: I think it s important for candidates with significant career goals to maintain a network; this is number one to me. Much of the recruiting for important talent is not conducted via job boards but through contacts, whether they are industry contacts, search consultants, attorneys or private equity professionals. I think LinkedIn has become a useful networking site and should be utilized. Attending industry conferences is also very useful to get noticed. I think taking advantage of speaking opportunities, workshops and providing commentary to print, digital and video information sources is also key. 5 4 BlueSteps: How do you grow your own network of candidates within this sector? Shahauna: In two ways. First, we are very selective in determining which clients we will work for. By choosing to work with clients who are highly regarded in the market place and who share our values to create and build outstanding teams, we have built a strong reputation amongst potential candidates. Secondly, we take the time to know and understand our candidates in order to ensure a great cultural fit with our clients. We have one of the best stick rates in industry. As such, our results speak for themselves and our candidates and clients often refer other similar, highly regarded candidates to us. Shahauna Siddiqui James: As a result of search assignments that we undertake, our research identifies potential candidates. We also end up talking to a wide range of people for suggestions and recommendations. There will be individuals who approach us and ask to be considered for positions as they arise. All these activities build our network. "I and my team seek every opportunity to talk with people at all levels and in all parts of the energy sector Yes, we use LinkedIn, but really there is no substitute for a phone call or chat over a cup of coffee! Iain: I and my team seek every opportunity to talk with people at all levels and in all parts of the energy sector. We also meet candidates and clients wherever possible. Just as the energy sector is a sector in which long term investments are made, we take a long term perspective on initiating and building relationships in the sector: candidates become clients, junior candidates become senior candidates, junior candidates become senior clients etc. Yes, we use LinkedIn, but really there is no substitute for a phone call or chat over a cup of coffee! John: I have covered power since 1989, and have grown out my network by attending conferences and seminars, including several speaking engagements. Once I had access to the Internet I further built out my network via direct networking, rekindling old friendships, and using sites like LinkedIn with its virtual rolodex. We also have a database of over 100,000 energy professionals that we constantly update. BlueSteps: What is your career background? How did you get into search? Shahauna: Everyone on the BluEra team is highly educated and has worked in industry prior to building their career in executive search. Specifically, our team brings industry experience from telecommunications, oil and gas, market research, oil and gas services, accounting and the legal profession. My background involves years of experience working directly with the MBA program at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. I worked with students and corporate recruiters as the Director of External Relations helping develop hiring programs. Later, I worked in operations and marketing of the MBA program, so my network is vast and includes some amazing candidates.

6 5 James: I am a chemical engineer and worked in the energy and resources industry in Australia in a variety of technical, commercial and management roles. I got into search nearly 24 years ago almost by chance. I was looking for a change and an experienced search consultant asked me to join him. He seemed to think I might be good at it and I guess the rest is history! Iain: I have worked in the energy sector my entire career, which is getting on for nearly 30 years! For 15 years, I worked for British Gas, with my last 5 years being spent as a Regulatory Director focusing on deregulating gas and power markets. I moved into recruitment in the energy sector after a brief stint running my own skiing, climbing and walking equipment shop. I have been recruiting in the energy sector for almost 13 years now, having spent the last 6 years leading Korn/Ferry s Energy Practice for Europe, Middle East and Africa. I got into search when looking for a new career and I realised that my greatest assets were a passion for the energy sector, deep knowledge of it and strong networks across it. John: I have been in executive search since I worked for a small boutique firm during my final year of college at the University of Chicago and discovered that I enjoyed the industry, and liked having the continual opportunity to help growing companies connect with A players. In 1997 I had the opportunity to co-found our firm, which has done very well over the last fourteen years. In 2010 we joined TRANSEARCH and I also became the global practice leader for Renewable Energy and Clean Tech.
