In 2016, we were recognized for the robust role women lawyers play in our partnership and firm leadership with a third Gold Standard Certification from the Women in Law Empowerment Forum. For the 10th year in a row, Bryan Cave achieved a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign s Corporate Equality Index, reflecting our welcoming and open environment and best-practice policies for LGBTQ lawyers. 4 BRYAN CAVE AFFINITY GROUPS Bryan Cave Women Bryan Cave Women (BCW) is dedicated to promoting the success of our women lawyers. Through a variety of initiatives and programming, BCW provides opportunities for our women lawyers to build strong networks inside and outside the firm, to develop practice and leadership skills, and to grow their business and careers. Here are some highlights from Latinas in the Board Room BCW in Denver sponsored Board Bound: Latinas in the Board Room. This event, organized by the Women s Leadership Foundation and the Colorado Women s Chamber of Commerce, was part of an effort to increase Latina numbers on community and corporate boards. Introductory remarks were delivered by Donna Evans, CEO of Women s Leadership Foundation; Cynthia Mares, immediate past president of the Hispanic National Bar Association; and Jennifer Cadena, Hispanic National Bar Association regional president. A panel of experienced nonprofit and corporate board directors then shared their experiences and stories. Panelists included former Colorado Senator Polly Baca, president and CEO, Brooke Cook (starting fall 2017 as a 1st year), Partner Michelle McMahon, Associate Daphne Rubin-Vega, Rebecca Zarett (starting fall 2017 as a 1st year), Counsel Renee Frost, Carolyn Rincon (alumna, now at Marsh & McLennan Companies) at New York BCW event. Baca Barragan & Associates; Debbie Trujillo, vice president and community relations director, Key Bank; and Debra Koenig, president of the Colorado Chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD). The program was facilitated by Gloria Zamora, president and CEO, Success Innovators Inc. Corporate Fraud Enforcement Presentation in Paris A BCW special event was held in the Paris office on the evolution of corporate fraud enforcement in the United States. Mary Beth Buchanan, Bryan Cave New York partner, was there to answer questions about current events and her career as a former U.S. attorney. Atlanta BCW Continues The Power Project BCW Atlanta s signature program is The Power Project, which offers executive-level women a forum for networking and sharing best practices about leadership and success. The Power Project helps women create their own personal brand, practice the art of self-promotion, learn influence and communication 4

5 techniques, set professional goals, and learn other strategies to help them succeed in their businesses. San Francisco Hosts Mentor Workshop BCW San Francisco hosted lawyers and clients at a workshop on effective self-promotion and developing mentor relationships. Speaker Pat Gillette, a top rated trial lawyer, leading author and one of the country s leading experts on gender diversity and equality in the workplace, discussed obstacles women face when looking for mentors and sponsors at work and how women attorneys can overcome these issues. Lawyers of Color The mission of the Lawyers of Color Affinity Group is to provide an active network for its members that offers opportunities for fellowship, mentoring, leadership and business development. Affinity group members throughout the firm meet quarterly to discuss issues that impact the recruitment, retention and promotion of lawyers of color. Lawyers of Color Affinity Group Biannual Firmwide Meeting Lawyers of color from all of the firm s U.S. offices as well as London and Paris attended the 2016 Lawyers of Color Affinity Group Meeting. The robust agenda included a workshop on business development skills presented by Deborah Knupp, an outside facilitator who has coached lawyers and executives Women in Leadership Bryan Cave is proud of its ongoing involvement with the Women in Law Empowerment Forum (WILEF), which in 2016 named Bryan Cave a Gold Standard firm for the third year in a row. WILEF created its Gold Standard Certification as a way to recognize law firms that have integrated women into the highest leadership positions at their firms. Law firms with 300 or more practicing lawyers in the United States are eligible for Gold Standard Certification if they successfully demonstrate that women represent a meaningful percentage of their equity partners, of their highest leadership positions, their governance and compensation committees, and their most highly compensated partners. Bryan Cave s support of women in firm leadership is fully aligned with WILEF s goals. The firm therefore finds numerous opportunities to support the organization. Chicago office Managing Partner Joseph McCoy joined a panel of successful rainmakers at a WILEF event to discuss practical tools for business development. Panelists covered topics such as how to cultivate relationships with existing and new business contacts, how to use speaking and writing opportunities to generate business, and how to use other marketing tools effectively. Denver Counsel Denise Erwin, Firm Chair Terry Pritchard and Chicago Associate Donald Cole at the Lawyers of Color Affinity Group Meeting. Also in 2016, Bryan Cave Chair Therese Pritchard was the subject of a Q&A interview by The Ladder, a WILEF website column focused on women leaders in the law and their journey to the top. I d say the environment is getting better all the time, but we still have a long way to go, Pritchard told WILEF. 5

6 internationally for more than 25 years. Dr. Arin Reeves, noted as a preeminent speaker, researcher and adviser on diversity and inclusion issues, presented on implicit bias. The Capital Area Food Bank recognized Bryan Cave with the most creative fundraising idea for the event. 6 Attorneys enjoy each other s company at the Lawyers of Color Affinity Group Meeting in Chicago. Bryan Cave Partners Speak at NBA 91st Annual Convention The National Bar Association, the oldest and largest national association of African-American attorneys and judges in the United States, held its 91st Annual Convention in St. Louis in July The six-day event included a panel sponsored by Bryan Cave titled Should the Billable Hour Be Dead? which included Bryan Cave Kansas City Partner Wesley Fields and was moderated by Chicago Office Managing Partner Joseph McCoy. Bryan Cave also co-hosted the general counsel/managing partner dinner during the convention, with Joseph helping to moderate the evening. DC Lawyers of Color Event Earns Recognition Led by our Lawyers of Color Affinity Group, the Washington, D.C., office participated in the Capital Area Food Bank s Food from the Bar campaign in 2016, raising more than $8,500. Of particular note, the office s Taste of Bryan Cave event was an Chicago Office Hosts Diverse Students from Loyola Law Academy The Lawyers of Color Affinity Group hosted high school students interested in learning more about higher education and careers in the legal field. Held in conjunction with Loyola Law Academy, the annual program provides high school students from around the Chicago area the opportunity to meet with law students and practitioners in the legal profession. The high school students frequently say the law firm visits are the highlight of the academy for them. BC Discusses Pro Bono Work with Black Law Students Association Representatives of Bryan Cave s Lawyers of Color Affinity Group participated in a panel discussion of significant pro bono firm engagements for members of the Black Law Students Association from Saint Louis University and Washington University. In particular, the group discussed Bryan Cave s representation of the Ferguson Commission and Syrian refugees. They also shared information on best practices for students of color as they transition into the practice of law.

7 Firm Supports NAPABA and AAABA Bryan Cave has a long history of support for NAPABA the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. Phoenix Partner George Chen has held numerous leadership positions with NAPABA and currently serves on the Board of Governors as immediate past president. He spoke at the 2016 NAPABA Convention on a panel titled The Art of Self-Promotion. Other speakers on the panel included California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu and CBS Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Lawrence Tu. In addition, Bryan Cave s Phoenix office has been a longtime supporter of the Arizona Asian American Bar Association (AAABA). The firm supported the AAABA s 20th Annual Scholarship Award and Installation Banquet. The 2016 keynote speaker and Bryan Cave client was Lisa Loo, deputy general counsel at Arizona State University and president-elect of the State Bar of Arizona Board of Governors. Chen and Phoenix Partner Bryce Suzuki are both past presidents of the Arizona Asian American Bar Association. LGBTQ Lawyers Bryan Cave is committed to offering an inclusive and welcoming environment for lawyers who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. The LGBTQ Lawyers Affinity Group provides a platform for advancing the success of its members and presenting open dialogue with the firm on issues that are important to LGBTQ lawyers. LGBTQ Lawyers Annual Meeting Bryan Cave s LGBTQ Affinity Group held its 10th annual meeting in St. Louis in Several members of firm leadership joined the gathering, including Chair Therese Pritchard and members of the Management and Executive Committees. Members reflected on significant changes they have witnessed both inside the firm and within society over the past decade and the success of the affinity group s strategic objectives. Guest speaker Mara Keisling, executive director for the National Center for Transgender Equality, and a panel of transgender professionals and activists addressed issues impacting the transgender community on both the national and state level. LCLD Top Performer The Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) recognized Bryan Cave as a 2016 Top Performer. The designation annually goes to the most active member corporations and law firms those that have committed the most time and energy to participating in LCLD programs. Firm Chair Therese Pritchard was featured in a video recognizing Top Performers for 2016 at LCLD s Seventh Annual Membership Meeting. Bryan Cave has a history of support for and involvement with LCLD an organization of more than 260 corporate chief legal officers and law firm managing partners dedicated to creating a diverse U.S. legal profession. The organization s programs are designed to attract, inspire and nurture talent, thereby helping a new and more diverse generation of attorneys reach positions of leadership. Bryan Cave has been a member of LCLD since its inception and has had a partner or attorney in the LCLD Fellows Program each year. Chicago Partner Jason DeJonker is chair of the LCLD Fellows Alumni Executive Council. Among other involvement, Bryan Cave was an early participant in the LCLD Pathfinder Program, has participated in the 1L LCLD Scholars Program each year since 2013, and has joined the annual LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program since The bar LCLD sets for its Top Performers is raised every year, and yet the number of member organizations that meet it keeps growing, LCLD reported. We applaud these and all of our members for their commitment to improving diversity in the legal profession. Their actions are having a direct impact on the lives and careers of the future leaders of our profession. 7

8 Mid-America Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce The firm s Kansas City office hosted the Mid-America Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce s 4th anniversary meeting and reception in More than 160 people attended the celebration, with welcoming remarks delivered by Partner Jim Lawrence, who gave an overview of the firm s involvement in local diversity and inclusion initiatives. Pro Bono Assistance for National Center for Transgender Equality For the second consecutive year, Bryan Cave continued to serve the legal needs of the transgender community through the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) Trans Legal Services Advisory Council. In furtherance of NCTE s and the firm s efforts to promote equality and dignity for transgender individuals, a team of Bryan Cave attorneys in San Francisco worked closely with NCTE attorneys to prepare and submit Freedom of Information Act requests to both the State Department and the Social Security Administration. These requests sought information on the record-keeping process and statistical data on requests, denials and grants of gender change records to better inform NCTE s policy and education efforts at the federal level. Bryan Cave looks forward to continuing its relationship with NCTE by providing legal resources to the underserved transgender community. Casual Day for a Cause Bryan Cave s offices throughout the firm sponsored a casual day on June 30 to raise money for those affected by the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting. Proceeds benefitted Strengthen Orlando, from the OneOrlando Project, which provides support to victims and their families. Bryan Cave Takes UNITY Pledge Phoenix Managing Partner Jay Zweig in 2016 signed the UNITY Pledge on behalf of Bryan Cave. The firm has signed similar pledges in Georgia, Texas, Missouri and North Carolina in support of fully inclusive non-discrimination policies related to the workplace, housing and public accommodations. By signing the pledge, Bryan Cave joined a consortium of Arizona businesses taking a public stand against proposed legislation that discriminates against LGBTQ people. LAWSS LAWYERS WITH ALTERNATIVE WORK SCHEDULES & SITES Bryan Cave is committed to offering balanced hours to lawyers who require flexibility in their work schedules because of family obligations or other demands. The Lawyers with Alternative Work Schedules & Sites (LAWSS) Affinity Group was formed to meet the needs of our lawyers who work alternative or reduced schedules or telecommute. The group s mission is to identify strategies for career and business development, and develop best practices for supporting and encouraging work/life balance while continuing to meet the goals and objectives of the firm and each individual. Flex Schedule Highlighted by Working Mother Santa Monica Associate Deborah Heald authored an article for Working Mother magazine about her experience working a flextime schedule at Bryan Cave. I regret that 8

9 I m regarded as a lucky exception to the norm. Why is it difficult for some firms to create and enforce policies that retain and incentivize their parent lawyers? she wrote. I have been flextime since returning to work after my first child was born. At the core of this model is a firm that promotes a culture of support and respect for its working parents. Sponsorship Program In 2016, Bryan Cave launched the inaugural year of a formal sponsorship program for senior diverse associates within three years of eligibility for partnership consideration. The associates were paired with partners, all of whom were senior leaders and rainmakers. Sponsorship is a two-way commitment between the sponsor and the protégé in which they identify mutual goals and undertake joint actions to achieve those goals. The sponsors created opportunities for associates practice development, leadership development and business generation. In turn, the associates prepared and executed individualized career development plans. The year-long program was highly structured with required time commitments and a monthly group videoconference for all the pairs to participate in relevant substantive programming and to share their experiences. After extremely enthusiastic feedback to the first year of the sponsorship program, the next session will kick off in Firmwide Support for HRC For the 10th year in a row, Bryan Cave earned a perfect score of 100 percent on the Corporate Equality Index (CEI) in 2016, a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices related to LGBT workplace equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The 2017 CEI officially rated 887 businesses on LGBT-related policies and practices, including equal employment opportunity policies; employment benefits; organizational LGBT competency; and public commitment. At the local level, Bryan Cave in Kansas City hosted an awards ceremony and reception honoring the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Leaders in the Midwest. The 2016 awards ceremony featured special guest speaker Beck Bailey, deputy director of employee engagement with the Workplace Equality Program for the Human Rights Campaign. In Atlanta, the firm was a sponsor of the Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Gala Dinner & Auction in April, with numerous attorneys from Bryan Cave serving on the event committee and attending. Julie Wood and Rebekah Mc- Corvey served on the committee for the event; McCorvey was recently named to the HRC Atlanta Steering Committee, and Wood is a former member of the HRC National Board of Governors ( ). In St. Louis, Associate Elizabeth Schlesinger serves on the HRC National Board of Governors and is co-chair of the St. Louis Steering Committee. Schlesinger was recognized as a Distinguished Gala Leader at the HRC Leadership Awards, part of the 2016 Spring Equality Convention & Board Meeting in Washington, D.C. Also in St. Louis, the firm s LGBTQ Affinity Group hosted a reception to kick off Pride weekend and celebrate the firm s 100 percent score on the Corporate Equality Index. More than 90 guests attended the event, including members of the LGBTQ community, clients and representatives from other St. Louis area companies earning a perfect score on the index. St. Louis Managing Partner Bob Newmark welcomed special guest Mayor Francis Slay, who discussed St. Louis ongoing efforts to promote LGBTQ equality and highlighted the city s honor of earning 100 percent on the HRC s 2016 Municipal Equality Index. 9

Ryan Reetz MIAMI Hosler Named to Most Influential Business Women of 2016 List St. Louis Partner Stephanie Hosler was named to the St. Louis Business Journal s Most Influential Business Women of 2016 list. She joined honorees from a variety of business backgrounds, including health care, banking and nonprofit. Vyas Suresh ST. LOUIS Legal 500 Latin America 2016 Bryan Cave s International Arbitration Team was recognized by Legal 500 Latin America Miami Partners Pedro J. Martinez-Fraga and C. Ryan Reetz were noted for their experience in the editorial. According to the publication, the two form a responsive and hardworking team which acts on a broad range of cases spanning investment treaty matters and commercial arbitration. In a further indication of their standing in the market, the pair also regularly act as arbitrators, including both ICC and ICSID claims recently. William Hibsher NEW YORK 40 Under 40 Partner Vyas Suresh was selected as one of the St. Louis region s most outstanding young professionals by the St. Louis Business Journal. Suresh was included in the publication s Under 40 list, with honorees chosen by a panel of Business Journal editors and former winners based on achievements in their careers and the community. Hibsher Honored at Diversity Dinner New York Senior Counsel Bill Hibsher was the guest of honor at a dinner hosted by the Legal Diversity Committee of JPMorgan Chase & Co. The event featured Hibsher for his many pro bono accomplishments, including his involvement with Bryan Cave s submission of amicus briefs in the marriage equality litigations on behalf of Family Equality Council and his litigating the nation s first AIDS discrimination suit. 10

LOUIS Firm, Swartz Recognized by Euromoney Asia Women in Business Law Awards 2016 Bryan Cave was recognized as the Best Firm for Diversity by an International Firm at the Euromoney Asia Women in Business Law Awards The awards ceremony also recognized Hong Kong office Managing Partner Kristi Swartz as the top individual winner in the Best in Corporate Governance category. The awards annually recognize leading women in the legal field and law firms with diverse work environments across Asia. Kristin Robinson WASHINGTON, DC Robinson Named Woman of Achievement by DC YWCA DC Associate Kristin Robinson was named a 2016 Woman of Achievement by the YWCA National Capital Area. The award recognizes women in the Washington, D.C., region who have made a significant impact in their community and demonstrated leadership in their career. Kar Receives 2016 Alumni Service Award from Iowa Law St. Louis Partner Arindam Kar earned the 2016 Alumni Service Award from The University of Iowa College of Law. The Alumni Service Award is specifically given for significant service to the college, university or community. Sonia Bain NEW YORK Bain Joins WX Woman of the Year Gala New York Partner Sonia Bain is a WX board member and co-chair of WX s Mentoring Committee. Bain spoke about the WX Mentorship Program at WX s annual Woman of the Year Gala. The event drew more than 600 attendees comprised of top real estate executives in New York City. Bain was joined at the event by the firm s Chair Therese Pritchard, along with several clients. WX New York Women Executives in Real Estate is an invitation-only association of executive-level women actively engaged in the commercial real estate industry in New York. 11

12 NEW PARTNERS IN 2016 Sarah Atkinson LONDON ATKINSON advises clients on a variety of corporate matters and has significant experience in domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A), joint ventures, private equity and general corporate advisory work. She represents clients across a range of industry sectors, including fashion, retail and luxury brands; hotels; life sciences and health care; industrials; and energy and natural resources, including renewable energy. Jason DeJonker CHICAGO Laura Giokas ST. LOUIS An experienced deal maker and litigator, DEJONKER represents private equity and hedge fund investors, financial institutions, Fortune 500 corporations and bankruptcy trustees throughout the United States in bankruptcy and creditor s rights matters. He has experience with lender and borrowerside loan workouts and in Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases, with specific emphasis on troubled borrower restructuring and forbearance, commercial foreclosure and creditor s rights, DIP and exit finance, and the Chapter 11 plan confirmation process. GIOKAS is the firm s general counsel, managing and coordinating all firm-related legal matters. In this role, she also advises the firm on strategic and operational decisions and develops firmwide protocols and policies in the risk management area. Prior to becoming general counsel, Giokas practiced in the firm s Commercial Litigation Group. Aileen Hunter IRVINE HUNTER focuses her practice in commercial litigation and intellectual property. She has litigated disputes for Fortune 500 companies including business torts, trademark and copyright infringement, shareholder disputes, securities fraud, unfair competition, employment litigation, breach of contract and real estate disputes. Jorge Perez MIAMI A former Circuit Court judge, PEREZ focuses his practice on complex litigation involving commercial, restructuring and insolvency matters, corporate turnaround and distressed properties, particularly receiverships and other fiduciary appointments as well as alternative dispute resolution. Perez has extensive litigation experience in state, federal and administrative courts at the trial and appellate levels. 12

13 BOELENS focuses her practice in real estate, banking, restructuring and creditors rights. She has significant experience in the areas of real estate development, acquisition, sale, finance and leasing of manufacturing, educational, office, agricultural and technology facilities. She also represents both debtors and creditors in syndicated credit facilities and other secured and unsecured financing transactions. Heather Boelens DENVER ECKSTROM represents clients in complex wage and hour litigation as well as derivative claims under California s Unfair Competition Law (UCL) and Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA). She also represents clients in single-plaintiff employment matters involving claims for discrimination, harassment and retaliation under both California and federal laws. Her clients span a range of industries, including retail, financial services, technology, freight/transportation, pharmaceuticals, property management, and restaurant or hospitality establishments Allison Eckstrom IRVINE HAGEN has experience representing commercial real estate finance and capital markets clients, including financial institutions, loan servicers, regional, national and foreign banks, rating agencies, Fannie Mae DUS lenders, insurance companies, private equity firms and debt fund managers. He advises clients on sophisticated transactions involving large loan origination, securitization and servicing, buyouts of public companies, buying and selling of senior and subordinate debt, and work-outs. Harold Hagen SAN FRANCISCO MOLL focuses her practice on estate planning and administration, with a focus on wealth transfer tax planning. She assists clients with their pre-death estate planning and wealth preservation through the creation of wills, revocable trusts, irrevocable trusts, the use of lifetime gifting and closely held business succession planning. She has helped clients further their charitable inclinations by creating charitable trusts and charitable foundations. Stephanie Moll ST. LOUIS PFISTER is a German-qualified banking and finance lawyer with extensive experience in the area of banking and finance. Her focus lies in advising banks, institutional investors and corporates on innovative and bespoke German and crossborder corporate and structured finance transactions, including syndicated lending, acquisition financing, project financing and real estate financing. She also advises on loans for exports and international deliveries, trade financing, restructurings and equity capital/pe financings. Sandra Pfister HAMBURG 13
