1 Eyle: Pilot and Pioneer Pilot and Pioneer Eight BY ALEXANDRA EYLE SU alumni making a difference in high tech PAl HICK A l 0 0 L E Man in Charge _ u.~ _..._.,._ n thi technological age, a new dicovery reult not from the work of a lone, diligent cientit, ala Thoma Edion, but rather from the coordinated effort of dozen of cientit hailing from a multitude of pecialtie. A reearch team may include individual with different pecialtie who are unable to communicate clearly acro field. How, then, doe an international team of cientit manage to work together toward a hared goal? They do it through a conummate manager who i killed in the cience but who i alo a talented communicator and organizer. Patrick A. Toole, IBM vice preident and group executive of the IBM Information Sytem Technology Group, i jut uch a peron. Toole joined IBM Tl year ago a an engineer after earning a bachelor' degree in engineering from Detroit Univerity. In 1967, he earned a mater' degree in engineering adminitration from Syracue, and hi career in reearch management wa underway. Today, he i in charge of developing and producing all the integrated circuit and circuit board ued in IBM product. Mot recently, Toole' groupmade up of 30,000 people tationed in IBM office around the countrydeigned, developed, and manufactured the ground-breaking circuitry that run IBM' new generation of peronal computer, the Peronal Sytem/2. Although thi ytem ha received much attention of late, Toole i proudet of a project he and hi team completed even year ago. Toole coordinated hundred of expert in phyic, chemitry, material cience, and engineering in an intenive effort to develop what i till conidered to be the mot advanced circuit board in the world. The board i a large a an eael chart- four time larger than it predeceor. It i made up of 20 layer, veru the normal 6, and it contain 330,000 circuit, each linked via 100,000-plu microcopic interconnecti6n. Equipped with thee board, the IBM 3091 computer, for intance, can perform any work from artificial intelligence to airplane deign. It took Toole' group of cientit, who hailed from univeritie around the world, one-and-a-half year to develop the board. "Every ingle proce and every deign parameter were puhed to the limit with thee board," Toole explain. "It wa a radical a breakthrough in the packaging area a tranitor were from emiconductor in the circuit area." Thee powerful board are ued in all of IBM' large computer and mot of their intermediate computer. "It wa an enormou technical project," Toole recall. "In a mall way, it wa like putting a man on the moon." 18 SYRACUSE UNIVEHSilV MAGAZINE Publihed by SURFACE,

While thee viual wonder look like trick photography, they are the product of computer graphic wizard Judon Roebuh, preident of the Judon Roebuh Company. One of a mall group of computer graphic pioneer, Roebuh wa the firt to take computer graphic out of the realm of cience and apply it to advertiing. Roebuh, who earned a mater' degree in televiion and radio from Syracue in 1970, tumbled upon hi vocation in college, when he aw hi firt computer-animated film. Computer animation wa till in it mot primitive tage at the time- two-dimenional drawing were generated on paper from intruction punched onto IBM card. There wa no way to ee what drawing looked like until they came out on hard copy; televiion creen that allowed one to ee and alter image, then ued almot excluively by cientit, cot ome $200,000. Seeing the poibilitie of computer animation, Roebuh read a book on the computer language FORTRAN and pent three year perfecting a ophiticated animation program called Viion, which he till ue today. He alo built hi own graphic monitor for $20,000 and began making threedimenional color picture. Then he and ome friend formed Digital Effect, went to New York City, and made the round of advertiing agencie. "We aid, 'Look, we are able to make-believe it or not- object that can actually tumble in three-dimenional pace and pin around,'" Roebuh recall. "People had never een anything like it. Thi wa revolutionary." Since then Roebuh ha created logo for NBC, CBS, and TV Aahi in Japan; advertiement graphic for uch firm a AT&T and Ford Motor Co.; and equence for documentarie and the movie Tron. In the coure of hi career, Roebuh diolved Digital Effect and created the Judon Roebuh Company, whoe ervice include conceptualization, cript writing, and production. Roebuh alo hope to become a pioneer in the film world. If the right cript come along, he would like to make the firt feature film done excluively with computer graphic. "We can make thing that are both realitic and incredible looking," ay Roebuh. "We can lead a viewer down a corridor that metamorphoe into omething ele. A erie of gate appear before u and open up, and in front of u another pace appear, then it turn itelf inide out and become omething ele. You can do with computer graphic animation what you cannot do with model, 2-D animation, or real actor. That' where our medium excel." AUGUS
3 Eyle: Pilot and Pioneer A R l H u R R 0 c K Something Ventured n 1961, Arthur Rock left hi job a a Wall Street invetment banker and moved to San Francico to embark on what wa then an almot unheard-of career: venture capitalim. The move promied great peronal gain and rik, but the deciion had repercuion far greater than anyone could have imagined. It pawned the revolutionary electronic community that ha ince been dubbed Silicon Valley. For the pat 20 year, Rock ha backed the leading high-tech firm that make up Silicon Valley. In 1984, he wa hailed by Time magazine a the "cornertone of the Silicon Valley invetment community." Rock planted the firt eed for Silicon Valley in 1957, quite by chance. A 1948 graduate of Syracue and 1951 Harvard Buine School alumnu, Rock wa working a an invetment banker for the firm Hayden Stone & Co. when eight cientit aked him to arrange financing for a emiconductor company they wihed to form. Rock convinced Fairchild Camera & Intrument to back the new company. Fairchild Semiconductor became the firt manufacturer of ilicon chip and i now known a the mother of Silicon Valley. Rock went on to help finance Teledyne, whoe product range from Water Pik to jet engine. One year later, he et up the San Francico venture capital firm Davi & Rock. He now operate a Arthur Rock & Co. Over the year Rock ha helped launch uch companie a Scientific Data Sytem, a mainframe producer acquired by Xerox for $950 million in 1969; Intel, the firt company to make a computer on a chip (and the company for which IBM paid $250 million to gain a 12 percent interet); and Apple Computer, which pawned the Iuera- tive peronal-computer indutry more than a decade ago. The four or five companie Rock back each year get much more from him than financing, however. They alo receive guidance. A director of Intel, Diaonic, Ridge Computer, Apple, Rational, and Teledyne, Rock cultivate an undertated management tyle. A Joeph Rizzi, of ELXSi International, a Rock-financed company, told Time, "Arthur ha the uncanny ability to ay one or two thing that can get you pointed in the right direction." If Rock work well with hi companie, it i becaue he believe in their founder. Each year hundred of propoal find their way into Rock' modet, unmarked office in San Francico' Ru Building. In reviewing them, Rock look for feeling. "Doe he have the burning deire to ucceed in the pit of hi tomach?" Rock ak. To anwer thi quetion he pend month talking to propect and quietly invetigating their background. "I would rather have an A peron and a B idea than a B peron and an A idea," he ay. "Nearly every mitake I've made ha been becaue I picked the wrong people, not the wrong idea." intj Apple ~~TELEDYNE, INC. 20 SYRACUSE UNIVEHSilY MAGAZINE Publihed by SURFACE,

Today, he i more likely to call himelf a coach. A a general partner of the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkin Caufield & Byer, Kvamme help chooe new companie that the firm will back. Yet he and hi firm do much more than provide tart-up money; they alo guide the companie they upport through the competition, management difficultie, and marketing deciion that can threaten even the mot promiing firm before they ail moothly. "We're trying to create ucceful companie," Kvamme explain, "not necearily ucceful product. A product i only one apect of a company. Companie alo need management, ervice, upport, and marketing." Currently, Kvamme erve a director to an impreive roter of companie, including Seeq Technology, a emiconductor manufacturer; Optotech, a leading upplier of optical dic ytem; and Metaphor Computer Sytem. Kvamme, who joined Kleiner Perkin in 1984, draw on 25 year of experience in engineering, marketing, and ale a he guide new firm from tartup to going public. After earning a bachelor' degree in engineering from the Univerity of California, Berkeley, in 1959 and a mater' in engineering from Syracue in 1962, Kvamme joined Space Technology Corp. a an engineer, and deigned circuit for an orbiting geophyical obervatory. One year later he joined Fairchild Semiconductor, where he directed the cutom integrated circuit diviion and repreented Fairchild in the development of the Apollo and Polari computer and the Poeidon miile. A a riing tar at Fairchild, Kvamme, with four other Fairchild engineer, wa invited to ave National Semiconductor Corp., which wa foundering. Kvamme pent 16 year at National, expanding it product to include watche, calculator, and grocery tore checkout equipment. He alo directed the worldwide marketing of the company' emiconductor product; headed the emiconductor diviion, which made up 90 percent of National' buine; and founded National' wholly owned ubidiary, National Advanced Sytem Co., a mainframe computer manufacturer. By the mid-1970, National' international ale exceeded $600 million. In 1982, he joined Apple Computer a executive vice preident for international marketing and ale and launched Lia and Macintoh computer ytem. But, yearning to tart new companie, he left after 15 month to join Kleiner Perkin, where he thrive on "turning a good idea into omething that can be practical in the marketplace." Looking back, Kvamme ee hi evolution from engineer to venture capitalit/coach a natural. "If you develop the kill to manage many different kind of product," ay Kvamme, "you probably are pretty good at encouraging other people' creativity-at being a counelor or coach. And you probably have what it take to be a venture capitalit." AU6USl
5 Eyle: Pilot and Pioneer EDWARD M ESBEH J H Try, Try Again orne people call Edward M. Eber Jr. the treet fighter of the oftware indutry. If by treet fighter they mean omeone who can bounce back from defeat, they're right. In 1983, Eber reigned a an executive vice preident of the oftware company ViiCorp. At the time, ViiCorp tock, valued at $9 a hare, would have brought $20 if it had gone public. But ViiCorp didn't go public. It went into the ground and took Eber' 1.4 million hare with it. "I lot $12.6 million or more," Eber ay. "If we had gone public, it would have been $28 million. It wa a lot of money." Yet Eber took the lo lightly. "I wa 31," he ay, "and had plenty of working life and earning power left." Indeed. Today, Eber i preident, chairman, and chief executive officer of Ahton-Tate, a leading developer and marketer of microcomputer oftware. Shortly after Eber became Ahton Tate' preident in Augut 1985, it tock fell to $2'Y, but by pring of thi year it reached $24; ale jumped from $40 million to more than $200 million. Today Eber ay he owe much of Ahton-Tate' ucce to ViiCorp' lo. "I learned plenty of leon from that experience," he ay. "One wa that in high-technology buinee you can crah and burn fater than you rie. The econd wa learning the value of humility; our company wa being very arrogant in it ucce. The third wa the value of litening to your cutomer." It i the third leon that Eber ha mot obviouly applied to Ahton-Tate. Early on, Eber began litening to cutomer and teting Ahton-Tate product on himelf. He alo acquired three buinee-forefront Corp., Multi- Mate International, and Deciion Reource. Now, Ahton-Tate, which once produced only it dbae line (advanced data-bae management ytem ued in office nationwide), alo offer word proceing and graphic oftware. Ahton-Tate alo owe it ucce to Eber' wealth of microcomputer oftware experience. After earning a bachelor' degree in computer engineering from Cae Intitute of Technology in 1974, Eber joined IBM a an engineer. There he created and taught the firt coure for IBM engineer on how to deign computer ytem around microproceor. The new option of deigning with externally manufactured microproceor led to, among other thing, the development of the IBM peronal computer family. During hi tenure with IBM, Eber alo earned a mater' degree in electrical engineering from Syracue in He left IBM to earn a mater' from Harvard Buine School and from there joined Texa Intrument a a peronal-computer marketing manager in The following year he joined ViiCorp a vice preident of marketing and ale and tarted the firt marketing and ditribution network in the microcomputer oftware indutry. Today, Ahton-Tate i ranked third among publicly held oftware companie, but ucce with Ahton-Tate ha hardly dulled Eber' competitive drive. Philip Cooper, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and cofounder of Palladian Software, ha changed all that. Palladian ha created the firt AI expert ytem that i eaily acceible to profeional. It' called Management Advior. Management Advior help manager olve exiting problem or project the profitability of a new product or invetment. At $66,000 per copy, it i beyond the reach of mot individual but eaily affordable for major buinee. It i alo a cinch to learn-no manual i needed. Management Advior i deigned a the ultimate helpmate for manager of the It draw on a wealth of information collected from a team of financial advior, thu pulling into a ingle program more widom and expertie than any one individual bring to bear on a problem. "Thi program offer the advice and judgment of eight or o expert in the financial and related field for a price equivalent to le than a year' alary for one of them," Cooper explain. Management Advior ha had a rave reception-everal copie were old in advance of it April 1986 introduction, when the ytem wa called Financial Advior-and companie are now ordering additional copie for more manager to ue. "One of our cutomer," ay Cooper, "ued Management Advior to better manage work flow in a manufacturing plant and aved $1 million in the firt year." With thi ytem well-etablihed, Palladian i now developing expert ytem in marketing and equity-liability management. A 1973 Syracue communication graduate, Cooper became a computer entrepreneur out of pure frutration. A a New York advertiing account upervior, he had to decipher computer printout of incomprehenible column of number. Couldn't the computer preent information through chart and graph? Finding that no uch program exited, Cooper decided to make one. He moved to Boton, hired computer pecialit, and formed Computer Picture Inc., which pawned a program that ued pie chart and bar to provide financial information at a glance. Cooper deemed it ready when he could ue it on the firt try. Launched in 1980, it took off. Two year later, Computer Picture wa acquired by Cullinet Software for $14 million. Intead of topping there, Cooper became a Sloan Fellow at MIT in 1983, where he tudied advanced technique of management cience. He formed Palladian a a reult of dicuion with AI expert he met at MIT. Today, Cooper maintain hi freh outlook. Buinemen tell him what they'd like a ytem to do, and he ee that it' eay to ue. I Cooper ever amazed at being an AI leader? "Every day," he ay and then laugh, "Only in America." AU6USJ
7 Eyle: Pilot and Pioneer A L F H E D M A C R A E Poitively Charged AT.T oday, uch electronic wonder a pocket-ize calculator that remember bank balance, digital touchtone phone that memorize and automatically dial and redial, ultrafat computer a fraction of the ize of their laboriou vacuum-tube predeceor, and video telecommunication atellite that link Ted Koppel with Mikhail Gorbachev on ABC' Nightline are thing that young American take for granted. Yet uch electronic product did not alway exit. Up until the late 1960, it wa difficult to ytematically deign and ma-produce the ophiticated integrated circuit that run the product we now take for granted. Integrated circuit perform many complex electrical function by regulating the flow of electricity through ilicon, which i modified. But it wa difficult to control the proce for modifying ilicon and thu the flow of electricity in a circuit. The technology of ilicon modification wa greatly improved when an international group of reearcher, including a team at Bell Lab led by Alfred U. Mac Rae, developed a mean of ytematically hooting energetic, poitively charged atom (ion) into ilicon. The ion modify the electrical propertie of ilicon to form the thouand to million of tiny tranitor that comprie modern-day integrated circuit. Thi development meant that ophiticated, high-quality new electronic product could be ma-produced. Ion implantation technique grew out of an in-depth tudy of baic phyic, conducted by Mac Rae. With a bachelor' degree (1954) and Ph.D. (1960) in phyic from Syracue, Mac Rae joined Bell Lab in For almot nine year he invetigated the baic principle of phyic, focuing on the atomic tructure and behavior of urface before developing ion implantation technique. " It wa neceary to develop a baic undertanding of thi technique before practical application could be realized," he ay. "That evolution i omething I'm peronally proud of." Since 1969, Mac Rae' reearch ha reulted in 17 patent on ion implantation and integrated circuit fabrication technique. It ha alo contributed to hi being named director of Bell Lab' Satellite Communication and Signal Proceing Laboratory. Working with group ranging in ize from 5 to 50 cientit and engineer, Mac Rae develop new atellite communication technologie, including long-ditance voice, data, and video telecommunication ytem. When Mac Rae talk about hi work, he exude excitement and wonder. That feeling, he ay, goe back to hi undergraduate and graduate day, when he "had the chance to work with very exciting people, try out idea that would fail or ucceed, or take an idea from baic reearch all the way to practical application." Mac Rae took hi excitement to Bell Lab. After T7 year in the field, that feeling i till with him. " Change in technology are evolving at a really marvelou pace," he ay, "and it' incredibly exciting to not jut be living through thee change but to be participating in them. I'm excited every day." 24 SYRACUSE UNIVEHSilY MAGAZINE Publihed by SURFACE,

Dulude wa a key figure in the teting and trial intallation of fiber optic in Europe and the marketing and manufacturing of fiber optic in America. Similarly, Dulude, who earned a bachelor' degree in mechanical engineering from Syracue in 1954 and attended the enior executive program at the Maachuett Intitute of Technology, wa reponible for producing the honeycomb pollution-control device that i now a tandard part of every new automobile. To meet the deadline of the 1970 Clean Air Act, CORNING Dulude had three year to overee the creation of a new material, develop it manufacturing proce, and build a new factory to produce the device. "There were three month in the middle of that three-year period," recall Dulude, "when there were myriad problem-with the new material, the product, the factory. If we didn't olve thoe problem, we could have hut down the whole automotive indutry." Dulude' ability to liten to people, undertand and break down their problem, and then addre each apect of the problem allowed Corning to avoid that crii. Dulude i alo valued for hi ability to identify market for new high-tech product. For intance, he and hi team potted the cutomer need for Photogray lene and for the high-tech cookware line, Viion. Viion i made of a tranparent material that withtand tove-top heat and microwave cooking. A hit in Europe, Viion i the fatetelling cookware on the American market. Genencor, a leader in the creation, production, and application of indutrial enzyme, i the product of a joint venture between Corning and Genentech, known for it recombinant DNA reearch and gene-plicing technology. The variety of high-tech product that Dulude ha helped develop and launch ince joining Corning in 1957 can boggle the mind. But not Dulude'. "The variety i what I like bet about my job," he ay.
