4 George W. Bush President George W. (Walker) Bush was born July 6, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut. When the president was 2 years old, his father entered the oil business and the family moved to Midland, Texas. 7 President Bush is the oldest of six children. His sister Pauline Robinson, Robin, was born in 1949, but died of leukemia in John Ellis (Jeb), the governor of Florida, was born in Neil, a business consultant, was born in Venture capitalist Marvin was born in Dorothy was born in The president attended public schools in Midland, then was a student at the private Kinkaid School in Houston. Bush attended high school at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts where he played football, baseball, and was also head cheerleader!

5 Like his father and grandfather, President Bush went to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and earned a degree in history. While at Yale, he joined the Texas Air National Guard. After training, he flew F-102 fighters from Ellington Air Force Base. In 1975, he received a master s in business administration from Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1977, the president met Laura Welch. They married November 5, 1977, just three months after they met. Shortly after their wedding, Bush began campaigning for a seat in the U.S. Congress. He won the Republican primary, but lost the election. Twin daughters Barbara and Jenna were born in In 1978, President Bush started his own oil and gas company. His company eventually merged with Spectrum 7 and he became chairman and CEO (chief executive officer) of the new company. President Bush joined a group that purchased the Texas Rangers baseball team in He served as the managing general partner until He and his partners sold the Texas Rangers in In 1994, Bush ran for governor of Texas and won. In 1998, he was re-elected, receiving 69 percent of the vote. In 2000, George W. Bush became the 43rd president of the United States! Trivia! George W. Bush is the second president to be the son of a former president. The other pair were John Adams and John Quincy Adams. President Bush is the 17th governor to become president, and the first Texas governor to become president. Bio Bottle Activity Make a biography bottle for George W. Bush. Biography bottles are 2- or 3-liter bottles that have been emptied and cleaned. They are then decorated like the person you are studying. 6 The President Prefers Peanut Butter & Jelly! His father made headlines when he announced he didn t like broccoli! We don t know whether he likes his vegetables or not, but President George W. Bush does like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, coconut cream pie, chicken enchiladas, egg salad, tacos, Diet Coke, and nonalcoholic beer. First Lady Laura Bush keeps the secondfloor kitchen in the White House stocked with egg salad and peanut butter for her husband s late night snacks. He gets up at 6 a.m. to feed the pets and make coffee for his wife and himself. He likes to exercise during lunch. The president likes to lift weights and can run a mile in seven minutes, 15 seconds. He s usually in bed by 9:30 or 10 p.m. He hates it when cell phones ring and pagers beep during meetings and press conferences. The president hates to be late and is always on time. He doesn t like reading long memos and asks his staff to tell me what I need to know. President Bush prefers blue jeans and boots, but when he s at work he, and the staff, wear business clothes. He loves baseball. President Bush s body language lets people know what he s thinking. His face sags when he s tired. When the president s annoyed, his eyes narrow and his jaw clenches. When the president is amused, he lifts both shoulders and tilts his head sideways. When he s listening, he purses his lips and looks down. He doesn t mind showing emotion. He had tears in his eyes at the Inauguration. Keep your eye on the president and see what else you can learn about him! 9

7 Presidential Preferences I m Ronald Reagan! To help me stop smoking, I ate jelly beans when I wanted a cigarette. I brought jars of jelly beans to meetings when I was governor of California, and my staff got hooked on them! I continued my jelly bean tradition at the. I m Thomas Jefferson! I introduced ice cream, waffles, and macaroni to the table! I also invented a dumbwaiter to carry food from the kitchen to the dining room! I m Grover Cleveland! Corned beef and cabbage were my favorites. I m George Washington! My favorite foods included cream of peanut soup and Virginia spoon bread. I m Ulysses S. Grant! For breakfast, I liked to have a cucumber soaked in vinegar. You might call them pickles! I m George Bush! Tex-Mex chili and Chinese take-out were tops on my list of favorite foods! But I hate broccoli! TACO SEASONING Okay, here s what you ll need: a large frying pan (12 inch) 1 pound lean ground beef 1 cup chopped onion garlic salt 1 tablespoon butter 1 envelope taco seasoning mix half a head of lettuce, shredded 1 large tomato, diced a lot of shredded cheese! sour cream (light) taco shells hard or soft When the taco meat filling is ready (according to the mix instructions), assemble your tacos! I like to put in the meat, then put cheese right on top of that so it gets melty... then I add lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream! You can even top it all off with salsa! Sometimes I like to have refried beans and Mexican rice with my tacos! Hey kids! Try making one of my favorites tacos! for dinner one night! Make sure your parents or another adult helps you in the kitchen! Saute the onions in butter for a few minutes to soften them. Add the ground beef. Sprinkle garlic salt, then stir occasionally until the beef is browned. Check the taco seasoning mix envelope for instructions on how to add the mix to the meat and onions. You might need to add water... 10
