1 MIT, UCLA, and UCSD Climbing the Rocks of Southern California with Keith Brueckner (From: V. Alexander Stefan. MY PASSION.) 2008, V. Alexander Stefan. All rights reserved. (S-U-Press, La Jolla, CA., 2008; ISBN: ) Copyright Page Sasha, said Keith, I have a rock for you. It s called Puddles are people, too. Joshua Tree National Park, Southern California The name was sensational. The rock was quite difficult: a wall-like type of rock. The difficulty, in the US climb grading system, was: B. 1 This climb was much too 1 5 means a climbing with the ropes; 10 B defines the difficulty of the climbing, (it can go to 5. 15).
2 V. Alexander Stefan. MY PASSION difficult for me, as a rookie, to put off. To be sure that everything would go right, Keith provided me with an extra tight rope. I enjoyed immensely climbing that rock; it has become my pet rock. This was in September 1983 at Joshua Tree National Park, 2 my first rock climbing experience ever and the beginning of my weekly trips with Keith to the Park. On our way back to La Jolla, we would discuss physics mostly applied physics. On one occasion, (we were driving back to La Jolla from the Park, it was in May 1984), I initiated the discussion on my idea regarding the current drive in Tokamak via the unidirectional CO 2 laser pellet interaction. Keith immediately suggested that I use two laser pellets: one for the plasma production with Nd: glass laser and another one, with CO 2 laser, for the laser current drive. 3 My New Passion: The Rock Climbing Keith Brueckner 4 brought a new passion into my life: the rock climbing. We would go to Joshua Tree National 2 Joshua Tree National Park: A desert area east of Los Angeles. It was proclaimed a National Monument in August 1936 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. 3 Thanks to Keith my idea had been improved [See my abstract on the Laser Current Drive in Tokamak. The American Physical Society Annual Conference, Division of Plasma Physics, (APS DPP, 1984)]. 4 Keith Allan Brueckner (b. 1924), an American physicist, the founder of the Department of Physics, University of California, San Diego, CA, in early 1960s.
3 Monument once a week, for a two-day climbing with an overnight stay in Keith s condominium in Palm Desert. Mount Woodson For a short-term climbing, an afternoon climbing, we would go to Mount Woodson, not far from La Jolla, quite frequently: a few times per week. Keith would always be in a great mood. I would be in a great mood also, expecting to get acquainted with yet another hard rock. Meyer Hall, University of California at La Jolla The very first time I encountered Keith was in his office at the Meyer Hall, (the Department of Physics), of the UCSD, (University of California, San Diego), in late June He was my host at the UCSD during my research visit to the USA. I had just arrived from UCLA, whereby I had done research in the area of the ionosphere plasma physics. At that first encounter with Keith, I was stunned. I had encountered a full-white-bearded man in his late 50s with the vitality of a graduate student. Keith was a man of a great physical fitness. Later that day, his secretary told me that Keith was a passionate rock climber. My intuition rarely had failed: I saw Keith and myself, climbing the rocks of Southern California. A year in the future, in September 1983, that would have exactly happened. Heavy Ion Beam Thermonuclear Fusion
4 V. Alexander Stefan. MY PASSION When I arrived in La Jolla, Keith had had already a problem for me. He was interested in the anomalous effects in Heavy Ion Beam Fusion, in particular in spontaneous generation of suprathermal electrons. We started very aggressively to work on the problem. In short 3-4 weeks, we looked at the problem at many angles, and concluded: the anomalous effects, (in particular the generation of suprathermal electrons), 5 are no threat for the Heavy Ion Beam Fusion, as they were for the laser fusion. 6 Keith would approach the problem at different angles; then he would swiftly make a decision as to how to attack it. In some research environments wherein I had worked, the researchers would deliberate as to how to attack the problem for weeks, without actually doing so. I did like Keith s style. He is the one of the fastest 5 A decade and a half in the future the bad guys, the suprathermal electrons, would become the good guys. The group at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory led by Max Tabak proposed the fast ignition fusion pellets whereby the suprathermals play a positive role. But then the bad guy appeared to be the Weibel instability, leading to the generation of d.c. magnetic fields in the core of the pellet, which can deteriorate the pellet compression [See my abstract at the American Physical Society Annual Conference, Division of Plasma Physics, (APS DPP, 2007)]. 6 See our abstract on the topic in the American Physical Society Annual Conference, Division of Plasma Physics, (APS DPP, 1982).
5 thinkers I have encountered as I ve been visiting the research centers worldwide. The Achievements in Physics Conference In early 1991, I organized the conference, honoring Keith Brueckner for his life achievements in the research in physics. 7 In his salute speech, Roger Revelle, 8 the founding father of the UCSD, said: Rudyard Kipling prefaces his wonderful book about his school days, with a poem: Let us now praise famous men, Men of little showing That poem could have been written about Keith Bruckner. I salute him. Thereupon, I organized a series of conferences on plasma physics and technology. 7 Keith served as an 7 Achievements in Physics, January 28-29, 1991, La Jolla, CA. The conference was organized jointly by the Institute for Advanced Physics Studies and the Department of Physics, UCSD, founded by Keith Brueckner in the early 1960s. 8 Roger Revelle ( ), an American scientist, one of the founding fathers of the University of California, San Diego, in La Jolla. 7 In late 1990, I founded the book series Research Trends in Physics, which was published by the American Institute of Physics Press for the Institute for Advanced Physics Studies. The major editorial work was done in La Jolla by my editorial staff. After the
6 V. Alexander Stefan. MY PASSION editor-in-chief for the book Inertial Confinement Fusion one of the first in the series Research Trends in Physics series. 8 The Laser Waveguide In Physical Dynamics, Inc., in La Jolla, we worked on the physics of heavy ion beam: heavy ion beam generation, propagation, and absorption. I was a scientific consultant there. Keith was on the Board of Directors. At that time I was very interested in the defense physics and technology. It was the era of President Regan s 9 Strategic Defense Initiative 10 known as the Star Wars. I developed several ideas: the Laser Waveguide 11 and the AIP Press had merged with Springer-Verlag New York, Inc., in 1995, I have continued with the series under the name: Stefan University Press Series on Research Trends in Physics (ISSN: ). 8 K.A. Brueckner (Editor-in-Chief). Inertial Confinement Fusion (Research Trends in Physics). (Springer, February 1993, ISBN-13: ). 9 Ronald Regan ( ), the 40 th President of the United States. 10 The Strategic Defense Initiative, the SDI, was the project, (started in March 1983), to protect the USA from attack by using the ground and space-based systems. 11 The Laser Waveguide is the method of boring a channel through a high altitude nuclear explosion environment, through which the radio waves are propagated for the secure communication with the satellites.
7 High Altitude Noise Generation, (HANG), 12 among others. Keith would always offer me his razor-like opinion. Keith Knows All Physics Keith Brueckner is the first-rate mathematical physicist. The ease by which he would go from one discipline of physics into another was only possible with a deep mastering of various mathematical methods. In late 1989, at the time when I was establishing the Institute for Advanced Physics Studies, I had a chance to talk on the telephone with Hofstadter 9 from Stanford, who said, Keith knows all physics. 12 The HANG is the method of the generation of turbulent plasma areas in ionosphere and magnetosphere, as the regions for the suppression of unwanted communications. 9 Robert Hofstadter ( ), an American Nobel Prize winner in physics (1961).
my sons and their support teams have develop a lot of support systems, Ron says. Today it s both easier and harder.
By Michael J. Major The fact that 80 percent of family-owned businesses fail to make it to the second generation, and 90 percent to the third makes the La Mesa, Calif.-based Brady Companies truly remarkable.
