The Center for Environmental Leadership in Business

CI s Center for Environmental Leadership in Business is a catalyst for innovation, convening corporate and environmental leaders to break new ground in the development of green business models and global commitments to healthy ecosystems and sustainable growth.

We are writing this at a profound moment. All nations are struggling to recover from a severe financial crisis and tackling high levels of unemployment and poverty. Despite encouraging signs of recovery, enormous challenges still remain for families, companies and governments to achieve economic security. At the same time, climate change has awakened all societies to the reality that we must change the way we consume natural resources. Despite decades of progress on the environment, our global economy is still not on a sustainable path. Amid these troubling trends, there is cause for optimism. Corporate environmental leadership can inform sensible policy choices to get the global economy growing again while also protecting healthy ecosystems that are essential to human well-being. An unprecedented window of opportunity has opened for companies to lead in the creation of business solutions that put economic growth on a sustainable footing. It is time for a new era of economic growth grounded in a smarter, greener way of doing business worldwide. As public concern has escalated about climate change and other threats to the global environment, the bar has been raised for what constitutes leadership in the corporate world. Customers, employees and shareholders continue to expect companies to lead on sustainability even during the financial downturn. Since Conservation International (CI) was established in 1987, we have worked collaboratively with business from small-scale farmer coops to the world s largest corporations. To us, the question has never been whether but rather how the business community can be an ally in sustaining the world s natural heritage. We founded CI s Center for Environmental Leadership in Business on the belief that corporate ingenuity can benefit the environment and create value for business. This simple but powerful idea rejects the notion that business executives and environmentalists are destined to be adversaries. Our corporate partners have shown that excellence in environmental stewardship and strong business performance are mutually reinforcing - not opposing - objectives. Our experience offers a powerful and hopeful response to the world s current economic and environmental challenges. Green business. Sustainable growth. Together we can rebuild our economies and restore our planet. Please join us. an unprecedented opportunity Peter A. Seligmann Chairman and CEO Conservation International Rob Walton Chairman of the Board, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Chairman of the Board of Directors, CI s Center for Environmental Leadership in Business

Since our founding in 2001, CI s Center for Environmental Leadership in Business has partnered with corporate and environmental leaders to create innovative solutions that improve business performance by helping to sustain healthy ecosystems. We are proud to be leaders in the growing movement among corporations to pursue environmental sustainability as a winning business strategy. Today we are working against a backdrop of global economic and environmental challenges unprecedented in our lifetime. To us, this is both an exciting challenge and a unique opportunity. Despite the economic downturn, our corporate partners have maintained and even enhanced their efforts on sustainability. They believe that society will reward companies that create new ways to use natural resources more efficiently, to prevent pollution, and to preserve healthy ecosystems. We see this as evidence that outstanding environmental performance is no longer an option, but rather a business imperative for companies in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. Corporate leadership can point the way to new models of economic growth that are more sustainable both environmentally and financially. To seize this opportunity, we are expanding our partnerships with business leaders and focusing them on the most pressing challenges societies face in managing their natural resources, including climate change, food security and the provision of fresh water. We are partnering in ways that harness the ingenuity of our corporate partners to achieve maximum impact. We focus our efforts on: Corporate Environmental Leadership Strategies advising leading companies on bold and profitable commitments to sustainability in their products, operations and supply chains Forest Carbon Markets working with the private sector, governments and civil society to mobilize business investment in forest conservation as a solution to climate change Agricultural Markets engaging leaders in agribusiness, food and consumer products, and retail to meet growing global demands for food, fiber and biofuels in ways that preserve and restore healthy ecosystems Conservation Tools for Business creating innovative technologies that provide companies with the knowledge and analysis they need to make better decisions and fulfill their environmental commitments Corporate Marketing & Communications mobilizing corporate resources and influence to raise public awareness about environmental solutions and empower people to make a difference through individual actions Corporate Conservation Partnerships partnering with corporate leaders to invest in protecting and restoring healthy ecosystems vital to sustainable economic growth In the following pages, we provide examples of the work we are doing in each of these areas. We are proud of the impact that we are having with our corporate partners. We invite you to join us to make an even greater difference. Glenn T. Prickett Justin Ward Andrew Wilson Senior Vice President & Executive Director Vice President, Business Practices Vice President, Corporate Relations creating value from nature

corporate environmental leadership strategies Conservation International, working hand-in-hand with Marriott International, helped to guide our company on an environmental leadership path that resulted in cost savings for our operations, greening of our supply chain, and brand value for our guests and employees through investment in a conservation project in Brazil s Amazon Basin. Arne Sorenson President and COO Marriott International We work with leading companies to create and implement strategies that combine bold commitments with practical solutions to deliver benefits to the bottom line and the environment. We help our corporate partners assess the risks and opportunities of their existing operations and supply chains; adopt environmental goals, action plans and timetables; and communicate progress and results with key stakeholders. Corporations today face an unprecedented opportunity to create enduring value through environmental innovation in their products, operations and supply chains. Integrated environmental strategies can help companies build business value through new products and business lines, reduced costs, enhanced brand loyalty, employee satisfaction, corporate reputation, product quality and market share. We recently helped Marriott International develop an environmental leadership strategy covering all facets of the company s business. The strategy features ambitious commitments on reduced energy and water consumption, green building design, employee and customer engagement, and environmental guidelines within the company s $10 billion supply chain. As a key output of the initiative, Marriott became the first major global hotel company to calculate its carbon footprint and launch a strategy to minimize that footprint by improving energy efficiency, sourcing renewable energy, and supporting high-quality projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation. Marriott s strategy includes major support for tropical forest conservation in the Brazilian Amazon through a precedent-setting project designed to protect the 1.4-million-acre Juma Sustainable Development Reserve, a biologically rich area threatened by illegal mining, unsustainable logging and road development. In addition to the conservation and climate benefits, the project is supporting employment, education and health care for inhabitants of the reserve. a commitment to change

agricultural markets Our work with Conservation International to preserve the health of critical ecosystems, integrate environmental best practices into supply chains, and engage farmers to comply with environmental laws in Brazil has been productive and informative. CI s pragmatic approach to environmental challenges is forward thinking, results oriented and innovative. Alberto Weisser CEO and Chairman of the Board Bunge Limited We work with leaders across the agricultural value chain to meet growing demands for food, fuel and fiber in ways that preserve the forests, fresh water, oceans and other natural resources on which all people depend. We help companies in agribusiness, food and consumer products, and retail develop and apply practical tools that integrate conservation principles into business decisions. The world faces an enormous challenge in meeting growing demands for food, fiber and biofuels without eroding the natural resources and healthy ecosystems that sustain humanity. Food production alone is expected to double from current levels by the year New technologies and better practices in farming, ranching, fishing and conservation will be needed to produce more while shrinking the ecological footprint of agriculture. Corporate leaders can create powerful incentives for sustainability in supply chains for food and agriculture. CI assists companies in creating incentives for widespread adoption of good farming and conservation practices and landscape planning to protect and restore healthy ecosystems. CI began working with Bunge, one of the world s largest agribusiness companies, in 2003 to promote conservation and sustainable agriculture in the savannahs of the Brazilian Cerrado. In Brazil, large-scale agricultural development has resulted in the clearing of forests and grasslands to establish pastures, farms and infrastructure. To help address this challenge, CI and Bunge are working with Brazilian farmers to create a network of protected areas on privately held farms in the Emas-Taquari and Uruçuí-Mirador Biodiversity Corridors and to create a protective buffer zone for Emas National Park. As of 2009, 96 properties were involved in the project and 132,380 hectares (327,118 acres) of legal reserves had been created or secured. CI has also helped Bunge integrate conservation criteria into its supply chain systems and regional development goals. smart land use

effective climate solutions forest carbon markets Conservation International is helping us set new standards for reducing carbon emissions, delivering environmental and cost savings for customers and preserving our shared Earth. Our work with CI to protect the forests of Madagascar reduces our environmental footprint, but also fights climate change and benefits the local community. Michael Dell Chairman and CEO Dell We work with corporate, government and civil society partners to mobilize private sector investment in forest conservation as a climate solution. Protecting and restoring forests is one of the least expensive and most immediate ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and it creates multiple benefits for local communities. We help our corporate partners invest in effective forest carbon projects and we partner to create policy and market incentives to encourage private sector investment in forest conservation at the scale needed to address the climate challenge. Tropical deforestation is responsible for 17 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions more than all the world s cars, trucks, planes, and ships combined. The world cannot solve the climate challenge without protecting its remaining tropical forests and restoring forests on degraded lands. Because forest conservation is one of the least expensive and most immediate ways to reduce emissions, it can provide close to one half of the world s needed emissions reductions through CI promotes a three-pronged approach to corporate climate leadership in which companies reduce their carbon footprint through energy efficiency, purchase environmentally sound renewable energy and invest in high-quality forest carbon projects. CI led development of the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards, which ensure that voluntary carbon projects provide lasting benefits to the climate, to local people, and to biodiversity. We re working to ensure that international and U.S. climate policies create incentives for private sector investment in forest conservation to reduce emissions and promote sustainable development in tropical nations. CI worked closely with Dell to develop a forest carbon project that will help them achieve their ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutral operations. By protecting the Fandriana-Vondrozo Forest Corridor in eastern Madagascar, Dell is demonstrating the business case for pursuing innovative and holistic climate solutions. Dell s commitment will prevent more than 500,000 tons of CO 2 from being released into the atmosphere over the next five years, effectively offsetting the company s fuel usage and business air travel over this period. Through its actions, Dell is helping to address the major drivers of climate change energy use and deforestation while also conserving threatened biodiversity and creating sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable communities.

investing in healthy ecosystems corporate conservation partnerships Walmart retains its strong commitment to sustainability even amid the economic crisis. In fact, our ongoing work with dedicated external sustainability and conservation organizations, such as Conservation International, helps ensure that sustainability efforts remain a part of our core business and a priority in good times and in tough times. Doug McMillon President and CEO Walmart International We combine science, economics, policy and finance to create protected areas, community-based conservation enterprises and large-scale conservation corridors in key landscapes and seascapes. Encouraging companies, governments and local organizations to invest financial and other resources in protecting and restoring healthy ecosystems is essential to sustainable development and growth. Healthy economies depend on healthy ecosystems. Today, however, most are not in balance. The economic gains of the last century came at a steep price to the natural world. Forests, oceans, and other ecosystems vital to sustaining life are in critical condition. Pollution, wasteful use of natural resources, and climate change continue to threaten natural habitats and the human livelihoods that depend on them. Since our founding, CI has helped to protect over 500 million acres of land, water and ocean in the world s most ecologically rich and threatened landscapes and seascapes. By partnering with more than 1000 organizations in over 40 countries, we combine cutting-edge science with effective government policies, sustainable livelihood strategies for local communities, and innovative financing strategies to enable lasting conservation. Since CI and Walmart began working together over five years ago, the world s largest retailer has put commitment to sustainability at the heart of its business model. Walmart has challenged itself and its suppliers to reduce waste, conserve energy and promote sustainability in the sourcing of merchandise ranging from jewelry to seafood. Walmart is also making strategic investments in conservation. In Brazil, Walmart partnered with CI and the government of the state of Amapá to protect a vast area of Amazon rain forest that will prevent greenhouse gas emissions, protect rare and endangered species and provide freshwater and sustainable livelihoods to local communities. In addition to this conservation investment, Walmart has announced a supply-chain commitment to refuse unwanted sources of beef that are linked to deforestation in the Amazon and other parts of Brazil.

conservation tools for business We create innovative tools that enable companies to make smart business decisions informed by cutting-edge conservation science. Through development of these tools, CI and our corporate partners are advancing scientific knowledge about the world s ecosystems and their benefits to human well-being. CI and our corporate partners are collaborating to develop a suite of decision-making tools and methods that help companies integrate biodiversity and natural resource conservation into their business practices. Our partnership with CI on Java made a real difference for the local community, and also helped us educate our employees about the importance of conservation efforts on the island. We re supporting the development and launch of IBAT for Business because we believe it will provide valuable information regarding important environmental considerations in areas where we work. David J. O Reilly Chairman and CEO Chevron Corporation The Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) for Business is a web-based platform that provides information on the highest priority sites globally for conservation. IBAT for Business was developed in partnership with leaders from the conservation and business communities and facilitates access to critical environmental information. It is detailed, specific and accessible, and provides key information as businesses explore and develop new sites for their work. IBAT is a joint initiative with BirdLife International, the United Nations Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Founding partners BP, Bank of America, Cargill, Chevron, and JPMorgan Chase supported its development. These partners who represent a diverse selection of business needs in the investment, agriculture, and oil and gas sectors were involved in the testing phase to ensure that IBAT for Business would be both userfriendly and a useful tool for their business. IBAT and other decision-making tools under development aid businesses in pursuing their development objectives while empowering them to do no harm. CI is partnering with several of the IBAT founding partners in the field. In Indonesia, CI and Chevron collaborated on projects to reduce forest degradation and involve local communities in conservation of Gunung Halimun-Salak National Park, as well as studying panther populations in the Mount Salak forest. innovative business technology

corporate communications + marketing We are marshalling the collective power of our corporate partners to inspire individuals to become personally involved and to take actions that benefit our one shared home. Healthy ecosystems and a stable climate are vital for our survival, and we must all take specific actions toward their protection. CI is enlisting leading companies as partners, helping them to inspire their employees and customers around the world to take personal responsibility and commit to a personal effort on behalf of the environment. The Wrigley Company Foundation is proud to partner with CI to launch programming that will create awareness of global and local conservation problems for people around the world, and provide practical solutions that can be woven into every day life helping us all become active members of Team Earth. Dushan Petrovich President Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company Foundation Team Earth is a new movement grounded in best-of-class science and delivered via technology, designed to inspire and enable individuals, businesses and governments to take bold new actions that collectively benefit our planet s natural resources. Companies and the public are often overwhelmed by the number of choices required to be responsible and sustainable global citizens. By using the collective, cross-industry power of CI s corporate partners, as well as other NGOs, teachers and students to achieve a new scale to engage customers, the Team Earth platform will help brands unify their green messages and amplify both their reach and impact. Team Earth demonstrates that environmental responsibility must be encouraged among both corporate leaders and the public, and CI is playing a unique role in bringing the groups together in this new movement. In 2008, the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company Foundation made a five-year commitment to catalyze support for CI s effort to engage the broadest-possible cross section of humanity in the effort to ensure a sustainable environment for every person on Earth. The grant supports Team Earth, which aims to enable people to make conservation an integral part of their daily lives, and to demonstrate how individual actions can make a difference for the future of the planet. inspiring collective action

the business council CI s Business & Biodiversity Council provides a forum for corporate executives from a wide range of businesses to share ideas and experiences and to explore new ways to pursue environmental leadership. Council members include many of the world s most influential companies, so the Council is a powerful platform for learning and collaborative action. There is a growing movement within the business community to embrace environmental sustainability as a winning business strategy. Enlightened corporate leaders are driving change within their industries and embracing the principles of sustainability. Yet, few opportunities exist for interaction with like-minded leaders from different sectors of the business community. CI s Business Council is an important forum for discussing how to best integrate sustainability in day to day company operations and on how to engage consumers to adopt environmentally friendly practices. Bob Iger President and CEO The Walt Disney Company CI s Business & Biodiversity Council gathers twice each year to discuss and hear expert presentations on topics of strategic interest that are chosen and developed by the members with support from CI. Council meetings have addressed corporate environmental strategies, climate change, water, environmental issues in China, environmental marketing & communications, supply chain sustainability strategies, effective responses to activist campaigns, and other topics. The Council includes over 25 companies whose combined global sales total more than $1.63 trillion and who employ over 4.8 million people. Outside of the formal sessions, Council meetings provide unique learning experiences for members, such as a guided behind-the-scenes tour of the Walt Disney World Resort s key conservation and environmental initiatives. The tour was part of the December 2008 Council meeting, which focused on the development and implementation of environmental sustainability strategies and was hosted by the Walt Disney Company. More than 40 corporate leaders participated in the three-day meeting and member companies such as Marriott, JPMorgan Chase and McDonald s spoke on panels and presented case studies at the gathering. convening business leaders CI also worked closely with Disney as they developed their industry-leading environmental strategy and goals announced in March The goals focus on reducing Disney s impacts on the planet across a number of categories such as emissions, waste and ecosystems as well as harnessing Disney s broad influence to inspire a sense of environmental stewardship in others.
